I grabbed my surfboard and headed towards the ocean. It was a bright summer day and there was no cloud in the sky. The perfect day for surfing. The winds were flying through the waves when I got to the beach. I got out of my jeep and grabbed my board. I wore my favorite red swimsuit.
“Hello Cassidey, long time no see!” I turned around to see Albert walking towards me. He was wearing his lifeguard uniform.
“Hi Albert. I see that you are on lifeguard duty today.” I nodded to his whistle around his neck. The wind made his dark brown hair fall into his green eyes.
“Yea. Have fun surfing. Hopefully I don’t have to save you.” Albert winked and walked away. I smiled and walked towards the bright blue sea. There were not that many people at the beach today. That’s odd. I thought to myself. I didn’t hear anything about the beach. Might just be a coincidence. I shrugged the thought off as I stopped at the sea.
My bare toes touched the cool waves, and I felt at home. I grabbed my surfboard and ran into the water. When I got far enough, I started to paddle on my belly. This was the life, the water spraying in my face, the smell of the sea, and the sound of the waves hitting the ocean, oh how I loved it!
After a while of paddling in circles, I noticed that something wasn’t right, there were no waves. I had felt the wind at the beach, but how come there are no winds. I paddled towards the ocean when I noticed another thing, there were no other surfers. The ocean was quiet. I was starting to freak out.
I needed to get back to land, but I didn’t know where I was. I looked around trying to find a landmark. There was a small island to my left and I smiled. I could try to find land if I can get to the island.
I started to paddle towards when I felt a slight wave under my surfboard. I stopped and looked around. Something was not right.
“Is anyone out there?” there was no answer. My surfboard started to rock back and forth. My gripped my board and tried to swim towards the island when I saw it. A dark shadow in the waves, coming towards me. I stayed put, trying not to pay attention. I looked again and the shadow was gone. My body was shaking and I was freaking out. The last I remember is being shot into the sky.
I woke up in a daze. Where am I? I thought to myself. My eyes adjusted that I noticed that I was facing the sky, the sun shining onto me. My hands felt grains of sand. I felt my feet covered in water.
I tried to lift my hand, but pain shot up my arm. I look down to see bite marks on my arm. I screamed. I tried to move my arm, but the pain was unbearable. I gritted my teeth as I tried to get up. My surfboard laid next to me, with a huge bite taken out of it.
I tried to think of what happened. I remember seeing a shadow in the water. It must have been a shark. That must be why there was barely anyone at the beach! Someone must’ve spotted the shark and the news hasn’t just gotten to me yet. But how am I going to get back to land when my surfboard doesn’t float anymore? I crawled over to the edge of the island. The water was cold to the touch.
“HELP!” I screamed, hoping someone might hear me, but no one did. I sat down next to the waves and started to cry. My tears stung my face, there were scars on my cheeks. I cried even more in pain. I was going to die on the island.
I started to star out in the ocean when something caught my eye. It was the shadow. I tried to scramble away from the shore, but the pain was too much. I couldn’t move. I saw the shadow coming closer and closer to the island. I was freaking out.
I tried and tried to move, but I couldn’t. I finally gave up and watched as the shark came onto the island, next to me. My body was shaking uncontrollably as I saw the shark stare me down.
“Plea… please don’t kill… me. Do… don’t hurr.. Hurt me.” I stuttered. The shark stared at me, its black eye looking at my broken body. It did nothing then swam back into the ocean. I saw it swim in circles and it came back to the island. Its head stuck out of the water and stared at me.
“What do you want?” I asked. I was talking to a shark, why would it answer? The shark flapped water onto the island with its tail. The shark swam in circles and kept repeating the same process over and over. It hit me that the shark wanted me to come over.
I slowly crawled towards the edge of the water and the shark came to my hand. It nuzzled it onto of its head just like a dog. This isn’t how sharks are supposed to act. I thought. The shark swam back into the water and looked at me, when I noticed something. The shark’s right fin was missing. I gasped. The shark must know what I am going through, with the bite marks on my arm.
The shark splashed water onto me. I looked the shark straight in the eye
“I am going to name you Survivor.” The smallest glimmer shown in the shark’s eye. Survivor swam towards the ocean and went under water. I stared at the spot until Survivor jumped into the sky, water splattering everywhere. I gasped and smiled as Survivor swam back to me. In his mouth was a fish. Survivor dropped the fish next to my foot and stared at me. Survivor wanted me to eat it.
“Thank you.” I whispered. I tried to grab the fish but I forgot that my arm was bitten so pain sprinted up my shoulder. I screamed and fell to the ground.
“Cassidey! Cassidey!” I heard Albert’s voice over the ocean, I also heard Survivor swim away. Albert came to the island on a jet ski and lifted me in his arms. I screamed in pain as my arm moved. Tears started to form in my eyes.
“It’s going to be ok.” Albert whispered as he lowered me onto the Jet Ski. The whole world went black.
(Albert’s POV)
Cassidey laid on the hospital bed with wires on her arm. I stared into the room window and watched as the doctors did tests on her unconscious body.
When I had heard someone screaming from the ocean, I rushed to my Jet Ski and zipped out to the ocean. I have heard that there were shark sightings in this area, but I wasn’t concerned, until now. When I had towed Cassidey’s body to shore, someone had already called 911 and an ambulance was already at the beach. The paramedics loaded Cassidey onto a stretcher and hauled her to the ER.
Reporters came to interview me and police men came to shut down the beach. The news spread quickly and soon everyone was talking about the shark.
One of the doctors came out of the room and had a worrying look on his face.
“Albert, we are going to have to amputate.” My heart fell to the bottom of my stomach. Cassidey was going to lose her arm. “Her surgery is going to be right away. She is going to be spending the next few weeks in the hospital. But it could’ve been much worse if you hadn’t been there to save her.” The doctor gave me a pat on the shoulder and walked into the room. He grabbed Cassidey’s bed and rolled her out to the surgery room. I watched as she rolled by, tears forming in my eyes.
The next few weeks were depressing. I couldn’t get Cassidey out of my mind. Every day I would visit her in the hospital. But one day, she wasn’t in her room. I asked the doctors what happened.
“Cassidey had lost too much blood and hadn’t woken up since when you had found her. She has gone into a coma. Some of the doctors are doing tests right now.” the doctor walked away.
Cassidey and I met on the first day of high school, we were in band together and we sat right next to each other. We both played the saxophone. Ever since then, we had been best friends. After graduation, Cass and I went to different colleges, but we still stayed in touch. After college, we got back together. We were about to have our anniversary next week, but now, I don’t I might ever see her again. I cried as I walked out of the hospital.
(Cassidey’s POV)
My eyes slowly fluttered open. I had no memory of what happened and where I was now. I coughed and my chest started to hurt.
“Doctor, she’s awake!” I heard someone yell. I slowly turned my head to see a woman wearing a white jacket with a clipboard standing next to my bed.
“Wh… Who are you?” my voice cracked. The doctor turned to look at me and smiled.
“I am Dr. Rose. I am glad to see that you are awake. Don’t move or else you are going to make your arm worse!” My arm? I thought. What happened to my arm? I looked over to see that there was no arm. I jumped and heart my heart meter beep like crazy.
“Shhhh.” Dr. Rose said. She placed her hands on my shoulders and pushed me back into my bed. “Everything will be explained.” Just then a tall man walked into my room.
“My name is Dr. Thomas. You might be wondering what happened, so let me start from the beginning.” Dr. Thomas talked about how some guy named Albert and saved me and brought me here. I didn’t recognize that name but Thomas said that I will in a few days. He told me that I was bitten by a shark and they had to amputate it because all the nerve cells were dying. He explained that I was in a coma because of blood lose and I was out for 2 months.
“Two months?” I asked.
“Yea, you gave a few scares to when you heart rate jumped.” Rose said. Before they left, they said that I know need to go through physical training for my arm before I leave. I agreed.
After a couple of months, I was freed to go. My memory only came back a few days ago when I heard on the news about my story. I needed to go find Albert. The doctors told him not to come because I didn’t remember him and that if he came, my brain would not register him as a friend.
I walked down the board walk to Alberts when I noticed that the beach was still closed. It made me wonder why it was. I looked over my shoulder and climbed over the yellow and black tape. I noticed that there was a surfboard next to an abandoned food stand, so I took it and started towards the water. My amputated arm was only a numb but that didn’t stop me from paddling towards the island.
Once I got in the water, all my worries went away. All my pain disappeared into the flowing water. I felt free, until I noticed the shadow. I stopped paddling and sat up onto the surfboard. I realized that I was not wearing my bright red swimsuit but wearing a t-shirt and jeans. I hope Survivor recognizes that it is me. I thought.
The shadow came closer and closer until it stopped underneath me. I gripped my surfboard with my only hand and waited. A fin popped up a few feet away from me, and then the head. Survivor bared it teeth and swam towards me. Survivor nudged my hand when he noticed that I was missing one. Survivor looked at me, then the surfboard, then back at me. Suddenly, Survivor swam around and showed me his missing fin. I smiled and laughed.
“It’s nice to finally see you again, Survivor.” Survivor swam in circles around me and I laughed. When I heard the engine running. I turned around to see Albert on his Jet Ski, and had a next launcher in his hand.
“Cassidey! Don’t move!” he shouted.
“No Albert! Don’t shoot! He saved me!” I screamed. But it was too late. Albert shot the net out of the launcher and it flew towards Survivor. Survivor tried to wriggle out of the net but couldn’t, his other fin was caught. I tried to save him but Albert grabbed and plopped me on his Jet Ski.
“What were you thinking?! You almost got killed by a shark, again!” Albert tied the end of the net to his Jet Ski and called on a walkie-talkie
“I have the shark. Cassidey is alright, but she needs to get tested. She might be going…” Albert didn’t say the last word out loud, but I knew what he said.
“I am not crazy! Survivor saved me! Don’t hurt him!” I tried to get out of the Jet Ski but Albert pinned me down.
“The Animal department is coming out right now to kill the shark. How many fingers am I holding up?” Albert held up three fingers.
“This is crazy! Don’t kill him! Please!” Albert had a really worried look.
“What is wrong with you.” I swear a tear fell down his face.
Albert pinned me down as a huge ship came to Survivor and shot him. Blood flowed through the waves and I screamed. Tears ran down my face and Albert shook his head.
Back at the hospital, the doctors locked me into a room and left me there. They said that they wanted to run tests until I was back to full health. I was already at full health I told them, but the doctors didn’t believe me. The last thing before they knocked me out was Albert staring through the window.
(Albert’s POV)
I watched as Cassidey fell to the ground in a deep sleep. This isn’t what was supposed to happen. Tears ran down my face as I walked home. I left the lights off as I collapsed into bed. My sheets where getting wet from my tears. I had saw what happened with the shark. I saw it gave food to Cassidey and care for her, but I wanted that shark gone. Now, the doctors think Cass is crazy and she can’t leave the hospital.
I grabbed the box from my nightstand and opened it. I grabbed the ring and threw it out of the window.
“I spend all my money on that, but now it is worthless.” Why did I not save Cass? I felt depressed. I looked at the box where the ring was and noticed a small engraving in it. I cried even more when I saw that is was my and Cass’s name next to each other in a heart.
