The Things You Say At Night

Forgotten - Part 2

Forgotten - Part 2

Jun 13, 2020

She just looked at him. Stared. Felt like she had forgotten what she was doing, and went back to the window. As walking in a fog, she couldn’t clearly see what she was doing. She had no idea what she should be doing. Usually tears would just press on, out of nowhere. Mostly she would just forget her thoughts. Forget how to think. Aiming to walk around in a place with no light.

As she walked away, he watched a scene he had seen before. Her seeing right through him, like there is nobody there. Her not knowing where to go next. Her automatically being drawn to the window, and just looking out, like there is nothing else in the world that matters. Nothing else worth doing. Following her, he looked at the empty chair, that she didn’t notice. Standing just beside her. He remembered how they used to hold hands, while looking out. How they used to talk all night, and watch the sun come up. How they used to laugh at each other, because of the black bags under their eyes. Having competitions on who had the largest. He remembered it all. He felt like he had to, now that she couldn’t.

Just sitting. Watching. Waiting. Not quite remembering what she was waiting for, exactly, she just sat in a state of anticipation. The moon came up. She would get off of the chair, and go outside. A feeling of knowing what to do only came at night. Only when she could clearly see the moon. She knew it was something she had to do. She didn’t know the why, but as it was with everything for her, the questions never really reached her mind. They just got lost in the fog that had invaded her it.

He knew, when the moon came up, she would go outside. He knew where to find her. He knew that she was drawn to the place he had proposed, even though she didn’t. He knew that her hazy eyes would be filled with light for a while. But he also knew, that it was only a matter of time, before this too, would get swallowed by the fog. Without hesitation he went after her, finding her the same place as he had done in the last years. She didn’t notice him. Even though he was aware that she wouldn’t, it still hurt him just as much every time. Not seeing the recognition of him, in the eyes of the person he loved.

“This is where I asked you to spend the rest of your life with me. Under a full moon. Where the stars shined brightly. This is where I gave you my vow, to stay by your side. This is the place that we will forever have together. This is the place I will always remember. For the both of us” he said. He had said the same thing over and over again ever since she started to forget. But it got harder with time. He had to take breaks, holding back tears, and clearing his throat. Otherwise sound couldn’t come out.

She sat there, looking at the moon. Feeling like someone was saying something to her. Feeling like the fog cleared up a bit. Just for a while, a clear thought transcended. I love you too, before the fog got heavy, and she once again lost any touch with her thoughts that she might or might not have had…
