Memory of You

“He said he’ll teach me about death from his culture.”

“Death is the end.” She said easily. “When you die it’s all over. You won’t feel the release of your suffering, the stillness of no anger or even the solemn emptiness of no joy around you. You will feel and see nothing, and be nothing.” And Sarah left the room with the plate of brownies, “Robinson! Would you like to try some brownies?”

Konya sighed after she left. “If that’s true then why is he here?”

“Say something?” Dareka asked, leaning over Konya’s shoulder.

“FUCK!!!” Konya jumped up, swinging his arm at Dareka, who had already jumped back. “When’d you get here!”

Dareka blinked then smiled, “I heard what she said~”

Konya stared stupified. “How… can you look so happy about it?”

“Because I know it’s not true.” Dareka nodded still with a smile on his face.

Konya scratched the back of his head, “Hmm. Whatever.” He looked over what Dareka changed into. A simple light pink button up with the white capri pants and sandals.

“Better?” Dareka asked hopeful.

“Whatever, yeah.” Konya nodded, standing up. “Let’s get going.”

After looking through the files until noon, Konya looked over to Dareka. “Hey.”

Dareka looked over to him, “Find it?”

“Nah.” Konya shook his head. “Wanna ask you something.”

“What?” Dareka got up, walking over to him with the file he was reading in hand.

“Why do you wanna find this guy so badly?” Konya asked, eyes thinned. “Revenge doesn’t sound like a thing an angel should feel.”

Dareka blinked, starring for a moment then shook his head. “No. No. Definitely not revenge.”

“Then why?”

“I… want to make sure he’s ok.”

Konya blinked, his hard eyes going soft in shock. “…What? Why?”

Dareka looked down, giving a sad smile with a shrug. “Because, if you could’ve seen the way he looked as me as I was trapped in that car… Bleeding like I was, and screaming in terror…” He paused. “I forgot everything about him but his eyes, looking at me like that. It was like…” Dareka looked up, trying to think of the right words. “Sadness, or pain… It was like he was going to cry because he was afraid of what…. had happened or would happen to me.” Dareka raised his red eyes to look at Konya, “No one’s ever looked at me like that before.”

Konya nodded slowly. “What color were his eyes?”

Dareka blinked then laughed, “Blue… and shiney… Like… Maybe he was wearing contacts or glasses? It was pretty dark and I was terrified, so I guess I couldn’t take notice. But I remember, he wouldn’t let me look away from him to look at my arm. Without even grabbing my head, his eyes were focused on mine, holding them in an invisible grasp so tight, I was afraid if I looked away everything would fall apart.”
