“So, what should we do now?” Roxy asked. It seemed time was different than in their world, as the sun was almost setting.
“Well, I’m hungry. What do you have in your lunch?” Charley asked, pulling his lunch out of his backpack.
“How did you manage to keep your backpack this entire time? I lost mine in the portal.” Roxy said.
Charley sighed, sitting down next to Roxy under a tree. He unzipped his lunch pale, pulling out a sandwich, a bag of chips, a bottle of water, an apple, and a cookie.
“Nice lunch. Did your mom pack it?” Charley often only had half a sandwich, so this lunch surprised Roxy.
He nodded, taking a swig from the water bottle. “Okay, so we should ration our food. We don’t know how long we will be out here, or if there is any civilization nearby. We can each have a quarter of the sandwich, and split the cookie. Sounds good?”
Roxy nodded in agreement, snatching the cookie from him and taking a bite.
After they ate, Roxy said, “We should sleep in shifts, just in case anything else comes.”
“Okay,”
“I’ll go first.’’
Roxy stood against a tree, watching Charlie as he curled up in a small ball next to her, placing his backpack underneath his head as a pillow. He soon fell asleep, his breathing slow.
Roxy sighed, looking around the clearing. Silvery light streamed down from the moon above, sparkling against the few rocks. A bird chirped up ahead, and she could hear a chattering squirrel in the brush. It made Roxy wonder if all the animals here talked, or if it was just her and Charlie. Roxy yawned, the peaceful sounds around her making her tired. She blinked rapidly, shaking out her paws.
She yawned again, slumping down the tree she had been leaning against. Roxy’s vision blurred, and she rubbed her eyes in a daze. “Maybe if I just close my eyes for a second…” she mumbled. Roxy quickly slipped out of consciousness.
