Haunted: Book I - Venator [English Version]

Chapter XI

Chapter XI

Jul 01, 2020

The birds sing and the air smells like breakfast, still sleeping you feel someone kiss you on the cheek followed by a voice:

- Babe, it's time to wake up.

Opening your eyes and almost immediately closing them, your brain can't form understandable images, once again the voice calls you:

- Get up, breakfast is ready.

Slowly waking up you hear the sound of footsteps moving towards the kitchen, the voice calls for you a third time allowing you to identify it as Irene's:

- Come before it gets cold.

With the sound of a chair being pulled back followed by the baby's laughter you finally wake up, opening your eyes only a little bit, the brightness that comes from outside is almost blinding causing you to finally get up and say:

- I'm coming.

Rubbing your eyes you stand up feeling no pain on your leg or shoulder, looking at your body you see new bandages over your wounds. After getting dressed you head towards the table but halfway there Irene asks:

- Babe, could you close the curtains?

You look at her and the baby sat at the table and then turn to the window that's a few steps to your left, grabbing one of the curtains you look through the window glass and before closing it your mind notices the reflex of two yellow eyes behind you, turning around quickly you find only Irene and the baby still at the table, confused you close the curtains and then sits down at the table.

Throughout the whole meal you remain quiet and uneasy as if there is something wrong going on, Irene noticing this, asks:

- Orion, are you ok?

- Yes, ye...

Before being able to finish your sentence sounds of shots being fired in the porch and incomprehensible screams reach your ears, you get up and open the curtains to look through the window but sees nothing, Irene asks worried:

- What is it?

Again shots are fired but from much closer being then followed by the sound of the front door being opened and closed abruptly, a scream of horror and glass being shattered echo. You look at every direction but you don't see anything, the walls begin to shake, an strange sensation of something pulling your arm is then followed by the sound of footsteps towards the bedrooms, you ears capture what you can only define as an explosion at the front door, the ground begins shaking and in a fraction of a second something pulls again and lets go of you suddenly.

A brief moment of silence follows only to be then interrupted by the sound of the baby's room door being locked unleashing a chaotic sequence of growlings and roars, the sound of the door being broken down, screams and cries and lastly the faint sound of glass shattering. You look at Irene thinking that she might be hearing these things too but an acute pain on your leg wakes you up.

Jumping off the couch you see it's still night time and that the house is in flames, in place of the front door there's a huge hole as if a large animal had charged right through it, smelling burning oil and fearing what might have happened you run to the kitchen where you were standing in your dream, there you find Jean dead crushed against a wall, you grab his shotgun and head towards the bedrooms, seeing that, whatever ploughed through the front door did the same with the door and window of the baby's bedroom, upon entering the room something grabs you by the ankle causing you to look down and find Mélanie lying on the ground with a large wound between her neck and shoulder, as you're about to aid her, she stops you:

- Th... the beast, it... it was after Irene. (She speaks with her last breath, pointing to outside).

Jumping through the window – or more accurately – the hole where the window used to be, you fall right in the space between the house and the road that leads to the village.

An angry and loud roar catches your attention revealing that, at the distance to your left, Irene – holding the baby in her arms – is standing on the middle of the road with the beast right in front of her, you scream pointing your gun at the beast:

- Irene, get down! GET DOWN!

However, as Irene turns to look at you, the beast rips the baby off her arms with a single swing of it's claws throwing him on the ground violently and then charges forward biting Irene between her shoulder and neck shaking her side to side savagely, the beast then lets go off her and stares at you tauntingly until you start shooting, whilst you continue running and shooting it escapes to the woods at the side of the road.

Upon reaching Irene you immediately kneel down pulling her to your lap and tries to tend to her injuries, when you see that she's trying to look to the right you notices the body of your son... Morbidly obliterated at one or two steps away from you two, crying even more you turn her face to you shaking your head side to side saying:

- I'm sorry, I'm sorry, this is all my fault... We should have left like you suggested.

She holds your arm tightly shedding tears and having difficulty to breathe. Seeing Irene's life extinguish as you hold her on your arms without being able to do anything, you reduce yourself to begging:

- No, no, no, you can't die like this.... Don't, please!

With the last seconds of life she has, Irene reaches for your face rubbing off one of your tears and then points at the sky, it is deep blue and adorned by a million starts and, right above you two is the constellation of Kynigós, as you look back at Irene, she hugs and then kisses you one last time until her body succumbs and her life ends.

As her body becomes lifeless, you scream to the heavens in rage and then remain there, crying in middle of your worst nightmare.
