If you couldn't guess, yes, the background of the second panel is basically a Scooby Doo homage, but with Ovid, Maryla, and mystery friend who certainly won't show up in the future. And, yes, Maryla does not actually go to this college, she is just helping Ovid move in because she's not sure yet if she wants to do the whole college thing.
