If someone would have told me in the past that I, Owen Leroy, would one day come face to face with a supernatural being, I would've probably not believed them. Yet here I am, in the middle of the ocean, watching what seems to be a mermaid fleeting away into the unknown of the deep blue.
How did it all come to this you must be wondering ?
A few days ago, I saw an advert online that talked about scuba diving and discovering the wonders of marine life. Of course, being the type of guy who would always be willing to try out something new, I jumped on the occasion right away. And after discovering the gruesome things that Maximus had done to one of our classmates this midday, I thought to myself that today was definitely a good day to take the initiative of diving in the ocean and clear my mind.
I felt a bit responsible for what that guy had to endure... maybe if I was there in the first place, I would have been able to stop Max immediately. When I was walking along the hallway earlier on, I did notice that albino boy from my class rushing to the exit with tears running down his face, and judging on the fact that I didn't see him in class this afternoon, I could only conclude that the guy who Maximus assaulted was him. And because I consider Maximus as a friend, I feel like it is only the right thing to do to go find that guy and apologize for his behaviour... again. But I'd guessed that I would have to do that on another day.
That is, I thought I was going to find him another day. I would have never guessed in a million years that my secluded classmate was in all actuality a mythical sea creature. I wouldn't have expected it either to encounter him in the middle of the sea, eating what seems to be berries.
As much as I am a person that always takes the time to help anyone around me, I would always find myself particularly intrigued by him. I never knew why he seemed to always draw me in. But now I finally know why. By the time I set my eyes on him in his merman self, I could only think up one word to describe everything about him.
He was simply beautiful.
The mermaids in folklores would always be described as those elegant and enchanting creatures, and he definitely proved those legends to be true. He had a long and magnificent tail with white scales running all the way from his fin to his hips, on which he reflected the sunlight in the most magical way. The fairness of his skin and hair only accentuated even more his already angelic look. Yeah... he really did look like an angel that has descended from the heavens to end up on earth. And everything, from the movement of his body to the way he was eating were as graceful as it could get.
He must have noticed at some point that I was staring at him, because soon after he slowly panned his head towards me. He looked mortified, but that didn't stop him from being beautiful. For about a minute or so we just stayed frozen, staring at each other. But, while he was staring at me in horror, I was admiring him in awe. I don't think I have ever felt as blessed as this in my entire existence.
Eventually my merman classmate came back to his senses and fled away in the blink of an eye. Wow, that guy didn't seem to be fast on his feet at first, but he swam away from me faster than I would have ever imagined.
For a while I just stayed there, completely shocked, wondering if what I've encountered was a product of my imagination or the actual real deal. A tap on my shoulder suddenly woke me up from my daze. The guy who joined me seemed to look at me with concern, but I couldn't really tell with all the gear we had on.
It didn't take long before the other scuba divers joined me and started admiring the plants on which the merman was eating just moments ago from now. Crap, did they also see what I just saw ? Soon enough they all joined me and admired in astonishment the sights, probably wondering how it could be possible for fruits to grow underwater or some other stuff. But I didn't care about that to be honest, because I had just discovered something far more impressive than everything else that was present here.
Eventually we all came out of the water and jumped back onto the boat. On the way back to shore, I was deeply wondering if the other divers had saw the merman that I had just seen. On that thought, a tall middle-aged man came up next to me, followed by what seemed to be his daughter.
"Hey, are you feeling alright young man ?" He asked in a concerned tone.
"I am fine, thank you."
"Well you seem fine now, but you were completely frozen in place once I met up with you in the bottom of the sea."
"Oh ! You were the guy that came up to me and tapped my shoulder !"
He laughed at the fact that I remembered such a small detail. His daughter stood in front of his dad and stared at me in admiration. She soon exclaimed to me.
"Did you see what I saw back there ? It was really impressive !"
Once she said that I started to panic a bit. I didn't really know the situation which my albino classmate was in, but from the look that he gave out when I discovered his secret, I'd guess that it would turn out to be a bad thing for him if an entire crew of people had actually discovered him in his true form.
"What do you mean ?" I said in a shaky tone. The daughter then leered at me, a little bit confused on why I seemed so stressed.
"You know... the plants. I didn't know it existed plants that grew berries in the ocean ! And did you see those little shells ? They were so adorable !"
She then pulled out her hands that were full of little multi-coloured shells. I sighed in relief and smiled back at the two family members. After talking a bit more about the wonders of the sea and what to find in them, they decided to head their own way.
Since they didn't bring up the mermaid, I concluded that neither of them had actually seen what I just saw. This made me even more curious of the other people who were onboard, and if they had noticed my merman classmate. I decided to walk around the boat and eavesdrop on their conversations, and after hearing them all talk about either shells or sea berries or other meaningless things, I soon came to the conclusion that I was the only one who really did see him back then.
I became so lost into my own thoughts that I didn't even notice the boat decking in, signalling the end of the activity. I hopped out of the boat, gave back the gear to the people in charge and went back on the street close to the main entrance. I soon noticed a fancy black Mercedes parked on the other side of the road. Recognizing the car, I rushed over to the vehicle and opened up the passenger door. I was met eye on eye with my butler, to which he seemed to never change his stern expression.
"Hey there Regy ! Thanks for picking me up on time like always !" I grinned at him. He huffed and turned his face back on the road.
"It is my job to do so Owen."
I sat down and strapped on my seatbelt as we drove back in direction of my house.
