The facade of the house reveals its age. Lamps on the sills, glow the windows in white. Orange, blue and red lights delineate the Victorian villa that looks completely out of place in this landscape. The interlocking cast iron gate is ajar and guarded by an awkward looking bouncer, he does not look like one that is usually seen in regular pubs. His relaxed posture, leaning against the pillar, hints that there is usually no confusion here or he doesn’t select the type of clientele. Alex greets him with a handshake while she just says a shy "Good night".
After the darkness at the entrance and along the corridor, the siblings arrive in a room warmed by a fireplace right in the middle. The interior surprises Selena that looks everywhere absorbing what she sees. Dark blue paper with a velvety sheen covers the place all around, except for the dark, aged wood floor. On the ceiling is a light structure in the shape of a circle that surrounds the fireplace. Hundreds, if not thousands, of small crystals hang from it as if they are rain droplets reflecting small rainbows here and there. You can hear the delicate sound of a piano that you can't see. A shiver of well-being goes up her back due to the temperature difference she felt a few minutes ago. The heat makes them take off the coats which are left at the reception. After sitting in a more secluded corner, Selena watches the regulars. She quickly comes to the conclusion that there is no specific type of client in this place and realizes that everyone knows each other, except for her. Elegantly dressed women talk very naturally and cheerfully with others dressed in casual clothes, the same goes for men. Drinks are also of a wide variety according to the consumer’s taste. One thing is certain, unworried mood prevails here and this relaxes Selena. Alex approaches and hands her one of the two beers.
- So? What do you think?
- I think you should have brought me here sooner. This is beautiful and the background sound pleases me. There are no noisy teenagers binge drinking, nor people hitting on other...
- None of that. There really isn't any of that here. - he replies thoughtfully and takes a small sip of cold beer, then with a sparkle in his eyes, he continues- Weren't you a teenager recently? Is there anything you want to share with your favourite brother?
A loud beat of music saves Alex from an abrupt response. As soon as a female voice sings, everyone turns to the bartender and raises their glasses high in the form of a greeting, who smiles back in return and winks at one of the women in the front. The bodies move to the rhythm of the music, conversations and laughter are interrupted when the chorus arrives. The sound is lowered and everybody sings very loudly, howling at the word “down” (*) like a wolf on a night like that. Then, again with the glasses in the air, this time facing their companions, they turn around at the rhythm of the song. (**)
