It had been days since I heard from Maddox, He didn't return any of my phone calls or texts. I just assumed he was really busy. I sat by my phone just waiting for him to message me. I was worried, but I didn't think anything of it because everyone was acting normal. Cade stopped by bringing my mother more flowers. He really was laying it on thick.
"Hey, Cade. Take me to work with you."
"Maddox isn't there."
"Huh! Where is he?"
"He took personal time off."
"Take me with you anyways? I have nothing better to do."
"Fine, I might be able to teach you something cool or illegal, or both."
"Cade Bennett don't you dare teach my son---"
"Our son And im only teaching him real-world business."
They didn't argue about it, instead, my mother just kept her mouth closed. Cade looked mildly surprised she didn't chew him a new asshole.
"Let's go."
He didn't have to tell me twice. I was out beside his SUV in mere moments. He didn't Get in or even unlock the car.
"Hey Emerson, You have a driver's license?"
"Yes, full license."
"Why don't you have a car."
"I did. I wreaked it."
"How?"
"Thunderstorm."
"Want to drive."
"Eh, Why not."
I walked around the other side of the SUV and took the keys from him. It had been a few weeks, over a month since I drove the last time, but his SUV was pretty similar to my mother's so I could drive this. Starting the car I put into reverse and backed out of the driveway before putting it back in drive. Cade was watching me pretty intently as I drove. Taking a quick detour I went to grab myself a cup of frozen coffee. It was my addiction but I hated walking there, so this was the perfect chance. After my treat had been attained Cade gave me directions to the complex or Maddox's mob house. When we got to the gate they glared at me intently until they saw Cade, then they waved us through.
"Thank god for them seeing you."
"They don't know you."
"I got that."
"Park there."
Cade said pointing to an empty spot in the yard. Jackson Chance wasn't that far away from us polishing a really sharp looking sports car. I hated to admit both that car and the one Maddox had were sleek and amazing. I wanted to drive it at least once. Cade looked at me and back at the car. I turned the key shutting the SUV off.
"I see the way you look at that car, Why don't you ask for one, or at least ask Maddox to drive it."
"Why don't you just buy me one, call it nineteen years of presents."
"Not happening, I don't even have one."
We got out of the car and Jackson nodded at Cade before waving at me. Well, Cade and Jackson talked about what I assumed was work I looked over the car. It was pretty similar to the one Maddox took me in. It was like Jackson read my mind.
"This one is a year newer, just picked it up, fresh off the lot."
"Fucking fancy."
"Want to drive it? It had a full tank."
My eyes widened at the offer. I couldn't turn that shit down. Jackson tossed the key at me and slid into the passager seat. Cade didn't say a damn word as he went inside, so much for going to work with him. I jumped in the car and buckled myself in. This was so fucking exciting.
"Foot on the brake and push this button."
I did as he said and the car purred to life. Setting the key in the little slot on the dashboard I looked over all the dials and made myself memorize them all.
"It's not that different from the SUV your father drives, just a smoother transition."
I put the car into drive and slowly pushed down on the gas getting the car up to twenty at a point of a second. It drove so smooth, Once we got to the gate they didn't even bother looking at the car they just moved out of the way and that made me feel pretty powerful as I peeled out of the driveway and down the road.
"What does a car like this cost?"
"A pretty penny."
"Probably. must be nice to own though."
"Wouldn't know, it's not mine its Maddox's Personal car, he bought it privately."
My mouth went dry almost instantly.
"Remind me not to mention this to him. I have a feeling he wouldn't be too happy with this."
"He will never know, he's gone, out of town till tonight."
"I see."
The car drove amazingly. I was really enjoying driving it. We fucked around with car driving all over including to the next closest town and grabbing lunch. After that, we took the car down a good section of the highway that the speed limit was one hundred and ten. I was blatantly speeding down the highway passing people left right and center. Jackson had the radio cranked as we sped. He was a terrible influence on me, but he was also very easy to get along with. Neither of us clued into who we were passing until we passed a nearly identical black car. It was about four in the afternoon, there was no way.
"Im going to pretend I didn't see him."
"Just keep driving, or we both might be dead."
"Oh because that makes me feel better."
My phone was vibrating in the console. I did have to look to know exactly who it was.
"Take the next exit off."
"Alright."
I played leapfrog as I cut threw the traffic pretty quickly. Getting off at the exit Maddox was going to fast to follow us.
"So what the plan now, Mr he won't be home till late tonight?"
Jackson laughed a little before he gave me the quickest directions back to the complex. We pulled up the driveway with barely anytime to park the thing. We both jumped out after parking the thing and I tossed the keys at Jackson. Jackson went back to polishing the car trying to look like we totally hadn't been busted already. Cade came out of the house just as Maddox pulled up the driveway you could hear the car.
"How was your drive?"
"It never happened ok!"
"Why not."
"We passed Maddox in his car, In his new car on the highway," Jackson said laughing.
Maddox pulled the car up beside the new one and I couldn't even look at him. Jackson continued to polish the car a smirk on his face.
"What one of you two would like to explain why my brand new car passed me on the highway blatantly speeding and blasting music."
"Are you sure that what you saw, you look pretty stressed," I said avoiding looking at him for the fear I would rat myself out for driving his car.
"Funny, you say I look stressed, but you won't look at me."
"I don't know what you mean."
"I know you have a licence, and I know you were in my car. I also know you sped past me, in my car. Give me the keys."
"I don't have them."
Jackson handed the keys to Maddox. His hand sat on the small of my back as he pushed me inside alongside him. I was totally getting in trouble. Damn Jackson.
