After the operation, Dr. James was able to focus on cleaning up the labs and putting his company back together. The world governments knew how important he was and that he was the one keeping the earth in one piece so they promised him they would look into the situation and deal with Lemoy Corporation. I stayed with Selah, She had to relearn how to use her body. She kept saying it was like being a baby all over again. She was amazed that she could smell and hear things. Feel textures and taste foods. The body was even designed to use normal food and break it down into a fuel of sorts. The body was self-powering. It took a while but the day finally came that she was allowed to leave the rehab center. The medical staff at the hospital was working with Dr. James to build more bodies. There were patients around the world that had been kept alive with all buddy dead bodies but working minds. He told them he would build the bodies but It would be like the one lemoy corporation stole. Selahs was one of a kind and he wasn’t sure even he could recreate it. He started producing the new bodies it took weeks to build each one. They were mostly for children which made it even more of a challenge. But made him try even harder.
As Dr. James worked on the new prosthetic bodies we decided as a whole that we needed to increase security, so the world governments offered us an island. Something easy to secure and isolated. Apparently the island surfaced when the core was repairing the planet and no one was allowed on it. Dr. James quickly had a lab built there and for the last time, I had to say goodbye to the old farm. Selah cried the whole way to the transport, That was supposed to be our home but Jessica Lemoy took that from us. I reminded her that it did not matter. She might have taken our work and even our home, but she did not take her from us and that is the only thing that was important. As long as we had our family home could be anywhere.
We were on the transport for what seemed like ages. I remember Dr. James woke me up with this child-like smile, excited about showing me the island. He pointed out the window and this beautiful island was rising over the water’s edge in the distance. Green and lovely in every way. As we got closer you could see the security net around it. Dr. James took security seriously this time. You couldn’t get within 5 miles of the island in any direction without clearance. You could see the perimeter barrier flowing around the island. It almost looked like it was alive. It wasn’t a shield, Dr. James used his knowledge of nanite tech to create this system. It was a mesh of billions of small drones that responded to anything entering the air space. And if you entered without clearance, well let’s say you might land but it won’t be in one piece. Dr. James placed his hand on my shoulder and with a sad tone said that he almost lost his princess once. No one was taking her away from us again.
He looked back up with a smile and pointed out the landing pads as we got closer. As we came in for a landing I saw an odd structure to the center of the island. I asked him what it was and he told me that he needed a new port to the core for fueling it so he instructed the core to open a port here. It was a bit odd for a fueling port but the doctor said it was just the core being creative. I was shocked I didn’t know the core could even “be creative”. As we were landing Selah and the others started waking up and preparing to move into our new homes. Dr. James took us on a tour of course. He wanted to show off the labs and security. The security forces on the island were made up of former military from around the world. Men and women who owed their lives to Dr. James and his work, Loyal to him at all costs. There was a small army on the island and you could see the way they looked at Dr. James. These big bad military veterans looked at him like he was their hero. Living with the man on a daily basis and being engaged to his daughter it becomes easy to forget who he was.
I know he hated it but seeing the looks they gave him you could understand why people started religions in his honor. The Great Dr. James Stromworth, the man who saved the world and gave life back to those who had no hope. He healed the broken and the near dead. Most of all he never asked for a thing in return. All of the prosthetics he made and the people he saved, it never cost them a cent. That was the deal he made with the world governments. He would keep the core fueled and working but they had to fund his medical works. I know many thought he was too good to be true. But that was just who he was, and his daughter inherited that heart and need to care for others. That’s what I fell in love with, she had this kindness that just flowed from her in every direction.
Dr. James continued to walk us around the complex showing us all the facilities. He was so excited. He then walked us to the habitat buildings and gave everyone their condo assignments. Lovely homes, well furnished and all of their personal belongings from home had been moved there. Their kid’s toys and even their family pets. He went the extra mile to make it feel like home.
As we were following him we realized we were running short on condos. After he showed Steven his condo and showed us where he would be living, he walked us out of the building to a gravel road leading further into the island. There was an old pickup truck sitting there and Selah started crying. She knew what he had done before I could have ever caught on. It was my grandpa’s old truck from the farm. We jumped in and went down the road to find my grandparents house sitting there on the island, the barn was outback and the crops were starting to grow. He said we needed the farm for the sources of the organic materials and he knew how much Selah had her heart set on living there as a family. So he had the house moved here. He explained that was why it took so long for us to get there. He told the pilots to take their time so the house could beat us there.
Dr. James looked at me with a grin and said “ Now then Son, don’t we have a wedding to plan? Don’t you think I’m letting you off the hook now young man?!” Selah burst into tears and laughter at the same time. Life was returning to normal. We were home.
