David let out an audible gasp as everyone around him huddled closer. Mr. Guerra pulled his wife into him and put a reassuring hand on his son's shoulder. Patrick tightened his grip on David's hand and David squeezed back.
"Wha- h-how do you know all of this? How come I have never heard of this happening before?" Theresa reached out and to hold of David's left hand. She had thought that him being stronger and more powerful was a good thing, that all he had needed was a bit more time. She always tried to help him with his control but it was too much for her to handle on her own. She had tried to reconnect with her coven for the sake of David but they wouldn't even let her utter one word before they slammed the door in her face. He needed a coven. He needed more witches to help.
She could never see David's future, and it had scared her. But when he was six years old, playing in the backyard, he turned and smiled at her and she was thrown into a vision. A larger than life owl, embracing her son in their large white and brown wings. For some odd reason, it had eased her mind and she never worried about it again. She had even bought a wooden owl figure and placed it on David's bookshelf as if it was his own little guardian.
"As I said this is a very rare ailment that almost never happens. And as for how I know, I am a doctor who has studied humans, animals, supernaturals, and all variations of hybrids. There have only ever been twelve cases, four of which were documented in the B.C. era. So it's not very surprising that it is not a known fact amongst all. David, you are the now known thirteenth case."
"Oh joy." David said sarcastically.
Kai had helped ten of those children when they had hit their ages of adulthood but sadly the other three were not brought to his attention till after the children had passed away. Kai knew what Mrs. Guerra had seen when they had shaken hands earlier so what he was about to say next wouldn't be much of a shock to her so he continued.
"David, that pain you felt today, that pressure build-up in your mind that caused you to lose complete control over your powers was not a one-time thing. It will continue day after day becoming stronger and lasting longer until you physically won't be able to handle it anymore. If nothing is done about this, you would be lucky if you even make it to your eighteenth birthday.
I truly am sorry if I am scarring you David, but I need for all of you to understand how dire this situation really is. This is why I must ask you, Mr. and Mrs. Guerra, to allow me to train David. David, you are still underaged so the final decision is that of your parents, of course, your opinion does matter and I am sure will be taken into consideration by your parents. He would have to come to live with me-"
Mr. Guerra stood from his chair and let out a growl but Kai continued.
"- in my home, as we will need all the time we have since his birthday is only two weeks away and he hardly has a grasp on the powers he has now."
David knew that he probably should have been freaking out, but something in the way that Kai stared at him, and all of the comforting hands holding him, he wasn't. He remembered in the woods how at ease he felt when Kai's cold hands rubbed slow circles on his back and how it had taken away all his fear and pain.
Mrs. Guerra also stood from her chair, albeit slower than her husband, she put a hand on his shoulder, "How long would he be gone for?"
"Four to five weeks would be my estimate, although it will all depend on David and how long it takes him to be able to wield his magic all on his own."
"I'll go." Everyone turned to David except for his dad who was still sending a murderous glare towards Kai.
"Why does he have to go and live with you? Why can't you just train him here?"
"It would be best for everyone especially David if he came and lived with me for the time being. I will have everything I will need at my disposal and there will be no distractions as we will both need our undivided attention on his powers. The week of his birthday will be the hardest for him and you being a werewolf complicates things further. Seeing your son in pain will cause your wolf to panic and try to "protect" him from the one harming him which will lead to you unnecessarily attacking me."
What Kai said was only partially true. During the week's Kai will need to use his own magic to transfer all of the energy that is forming in David into himself or into the earth as energy, magical or not, cannot be destroyed. He needed to train David far away because he couldn't have them seeing him use magic all day every day. He didn't want to have to make up excuses and lies as to what he would actually be doing. He would be needing a lot of his attention on David and having the alpha trying to rip at his throat would be nothing but bothersome. He would rather not hurt the man since he would only be acting on instincts urging him to protect his son.
"May we discuss this in private please?" Kai nodded at Theresa and left the room.
"He is not going to go live with some stranger!"
"Darryl what other choice do we have! You heard what Kai said, this could kill David!"
"I still don't see why he has to go live with him. What if something happens? What if he isn't someone we should be putting our trust in? What if he's just making all of this up?"
Theresa couldn't help but replay the scene she saw when shaking Kai's hand, "I don't like it either, and trust me I have the same doubts." She turned to David and pulled him tightly into her arms. "But I also don't want to lose my son." As she hugged him a flash of his future played in her mind. Her son was a bit older and was sitting on a couch, snuggling with a very familiar boy with blonde hair, and the very familiar boy pressed a loving kiss on his forehead. She pulled away and raised an eyebrow at the two teens.
Well then.
"I want to go with him."
"No."
"Dad, he can help me. I have never been able to control my fire and when I was in the woods I was in so much pain I lost all control; I almost hurt people. When Kai came over and put his hands on my back all of the pain disappeared and he helped me bring the flames down. He can help me. I need to go with him."
"I think he should go too." Darryl turned to his wife. "As much as it pains me to say, we can't save him. I have enough trouble as it is holding his powers at bay. If what Kai says is true then David won't live past his eighteenth...
How would we be able to live with ourselves when he dies knowing we could have saved him?"
Darryl wanted to argue back but really, what other choice did they have? If David didn't go he would die.
He reluctantly nodded his head and they all left the room to find Kai. He was in the living room sitting on the sofa. When the got to him he stood and waited for them to tell him their answer.
They all stood there for a moment before Mr. Guerra finally spoke, "Does he need to pack right now?"
Kai sighed in relief. He knew they would agree if not now then later when and after another one of David's magic flairs would hit. He was just glad that the boy wouldn't have to go through any more pain. "No, I will come back tomorrow morning to pick him up. I will give you this time to say your goodbyes.
Do not fear, this will not be the last time you see him, and I am sure he has a cell phone. He won't be denied the use of it and he will be able to call every day if need be. We can discuss it more tomorrow."
Kai went toward them and shook their hands and bid them goodnight. When he got to David he smiled and shook his hand as well. David closed his eyes and enjoyed the coolness of Kai's hand in his. The headache that he hadn't realized was forming was gone and he let out a breath, "Thank you."
"You're welcome."
They walked Kai out the door and Theresa let out a gasp when she saw a beautiful brown and white owl land on Kai's shoulder. She couldn't believe her eyes, "It's the owl."
Kai smiled and nodded his head once "I will be back tomorrow at ten AM. Goodnight."
