"This is your room," Ansel says as we both step inside a small, but comfortable looking room.
"This is the servant quarters. Everyone is asleep now, you will meet them tomorrow morning when the shift starts" I nod, walking further into the room, inspecting everything.
"That's it then, and for the record, I am glad that you made it out of this alive," he says smiling.
"Me too, Ansel," I say, smiling back. Despite everything, I think he will be a pleasant company to be around.
"Ok then, see you tomorrow" I drawl, ushering him out of the room.
With a last smile, he leaves, closing the door behind. I plop onto the bed, tired. The long talk with the king had drained me. I realize that I did not even know this guy's name. Maybe it's better this way.
And what was I thinking? Agreeing with everything he said?
I'm weak? I'll show that asshole who is weak!
Being around him had clouded my judgments. That stupid scent was messing up my brain, making me a whimsy. Yes, everything he said sort of made sense, and he also explained his reasons to me rather than just outright ignoring me. For that, I'll let him off for calling me weak. He seems to be a person who thought with his brain instead of his heart. And If he wants to marry some pure-blooded royal, he sure can.
I may be only half werewolf, but that doesn't make me weak. It means that I am also half something; I am a combination of two creatures, so I'd have both of their powers, and every weakness a werewolf has, that he has, would only affect me half as much. And If he doesn't realize that, then it's his loose!
Now I just have to find what the other half of me is.
What is that smell? I think, now noticing the odd shift of air in the room. I was feeling slightly hot, but weirdly, it was a good kind of hot, not the one that makes you sweat and tired. I feel my entire body buzzing with life, a new-found energy zapping in me.
The smell was protruding. Something is burning, I think, now recognizing the smell. My legs were feeling extra hot, more than my body. I look down to see the bottom of my linen pants being licked by flames of fire.
I scream loudly, quickly getting on my feet. Shit, what do I do? I look around the room, trying to find something to put the fire off. Seeing a small water bottle on the dresser, I quickly open the lid and dump the entire thing onto the fire.
To my utter dismay, the water does nothing to the fire. It continues licking its way up my pants, now reaching my thighs. Shit, shit, shit I chant in my head moving around the room, trying to find something to put the fire off.
Blanket!
Quickly leaning onto the bed, I pull the blanket from the bed in one go. Grabbing the last bottle of water from the dresser, I pour the entire thing onto the blanket before covering it around me tightly, cutting off oxygen from the fire.
This should do the trick I think, trying to calm my mind. After waiting for a few seconds, I look down. What the fuck?
The flames of fire were now licking the soaked blanket covering my body. Swiftly removing the blanket from my body, I run to the door, the flames now reaching my shirt.
"Aahhh fire!" I scream loudly, as I run into the hallway, trying to get someone's attention. The guard stationed at the end of the hallway notices and starts running over to me.
The pond!
Remembering the small pond I saw on my way to the quarters, I quickly make a run outside.
"I am going to the pond. There is a blanket on fire inside! Get it!" I scream at the guard, turning my head. I see the guard nodding before entering my room.
Why does the darn thing have to be far? Seeing the pond approach a few feet away, I pick up my pace and make run straight for it. The flames have now fully engulfed my clothing. To any stranger looking outside their window, I would look scary, like a villain straight from a children's fairytale.
Not thinking twice, I jump into the water, instantly putting out the fire. I break out of the water, coming out for air. The cool night air and water calms my tense body. My body no longer felt hot and the zapping energy from earlier was gone too. I sigh, further easing into the water.
"Oh dearie, what happened?" I hear someone ask. I look up to see a middle-aged woman dressed in servant attire, looking concerned. "I'm not sure, my clothes caught on fire," I say, slowly swimming to the edge of the pond.
"Wait here, let me quickly grab a towel for you, I think your clothes are completely burned off" I nod. She quickly takes off leaving me alone again. I hear a larger pair of feet running towards to pond. Easing into the water, I try to cover my body as much as I can.
The guard from earlier comes running with a burning blanket in his hand. He throws it into the water. I watch as the blanket slowly sink into the pond, flames exhausted. Noticing my presence, he looks over. Seeing the state of attire, he quickly shuffles off, mumbling something incoherent under his breath.
"Here it is. Come on, quickly dry off, we don't want you to catch a cold now do we." the woman from earlier says, running over to me.
She helps me get out of the pond and covers me with a large towel. "Let's go to your room, dearie" she puts her arm around me and guides me to my room.
"Are you all right, hon? What happened?" She asks as we enter the room. "I'm not sure I must have touched a candle by mistake or something".
"Honey, this castle is lit with magic candles, they float at the ceiling of the room, not a single one since I have been working here has ever fallen down or caused a fire"
I look up and sure enough, there were several candles floating around the room. "Then what could it have been?" I ask, turning to her.
"I'm not sure hon, a fire doesn't just come from thin air does it?"
I slowly take a seat on my bed, tired and confused. She's right. How did the fire start?
But oddly, the fire did not hurt me one bit. It almost felt like home. Not wanting to freak her, i keep my mouth shut.
She follows and stands in front of me, taking a towel, she helps me dry my hair.
"He spoke with you didn't he?"
I nod slowly "Yeah, he explained everything".
"Honey, you have to understand. It hasn't been long since he came to accent the throne. He is young and inexperienced, trying his best to take care of this large kingdom. He also has a sweet spot for Anastasia, which is why-"
"Who's Anastasia?" I ask, cutting her.
She freezes, her eyes widening as if realizing a mistake. "Oh, dearie look at the time! I have to get back. I will see you tomorrow. Sleep tight!" dropping the towel on the floor, she bolts out of the room, closing the door behind her.
Wtf was that?
Who's Anastasia?
