…“Remy”...
…“Get up Remy!” A familiar, eerie voice wavered in and out of my head, like a distorted ambulance siren somewhere in the night.
…“Remy...Please...Get up now!”
I slowly regain consciousness, my body heeding this ominous command. Blinking my eyes as the rapid flood of bright florescent lighting attacked my view. I blinked again, slowly taking in the commotion around me.
Where the fuck am I?
My vision was hazy and I can only make out large, strange blurs around me. Their swift movements forging a ring around me of chaotic dancing shapes and colors. Sounds of people hollering and sneakers on the concrete floor muddle my senses, but I was able to pick up the faint smell of blood.
What the hell is happening right now?
Kash came into view, hovering over me frantically and open-mouth screaming while trying to pull me off the floor, adding to the harsh cacophony of noises flooding my ears. My head was still spinning, a throbbing pain surging from the back of my head, but I accept the offer of Kash’s hands, getting up from the floor. Following his lead to the safety of the sidelines, outside of the jumbled scuffle.
The drifting stars in my vision begin to fade away, allowing me to finally make out the identity of the strange shapes, Theo and Derrick.
The two were fighting the group of stocky boys. Derrick threw coordinated punches and swift kicks to two of the boys, his movements fast and precise like a martial artist.
The three remaining boys attacked Theo, maybe an unfair match for anyone else fighting, but not for him. Theo charged into the group, throwing one of them to the ground, instantly knocking him out. The other two try to counterattack but they miss, Theo dodged and knock them to the ground. His movements were chaotic and powerful, and his rage visible in every violent motion. The wild display attracted a small crowd, gawking teenagers delighting in the graphic school fight.
“Are you ok?” I could finally hear Kash’s words clearly.
I touch the back of my head where the pain is stemming from, a wet sensation on my fingertips grabbed my attention. Withdrawing my hand to see bright crimson bloodstains on my fingertips, I was bleeding.
“You are definitely not ok!” Kash screamed ballistically.
“It’s ok Kash… it's probably just a minor cut.” I tried calming him down. “What happened?”
“One of those guys sucker punched you from behind. Theo saw that, went crazy, and attacked them.” Kash cried, tears running down his cheeks as he huddled close to me. You would think he was the one who got hit.
“This is bad, we have to leave before things get worse,” he panicked.
I turned back to the chaos; Theo and Derrick were still fighting with the two remaining boys left standing. Derrick threw a swift roundhouse kick and knocked one of the boys down, joining the other fallen boys. Theo seized the remaining boy and punched him in the gut so hard blood spewed from his mouth.
Theo and Derrick were the only ones left standing, breathing heavily from the altercation. One of the boys tried to hobble away, and Theo retaliated by kicking him down. In an instant, animal-like in nature, he aggressively released even more psychotic mania on the poor kid; Theo’s torn grey shirt becoming visibly stained from his violence.
I don’t know what came over me but I felt the urge to stop Theo.
“Theo...please calm down,” I plead.
Theo ignored me, continuing to pummel the kid. My body pulled me forward, a strange force guiding me to Theo's side. I reach out and cautiously touch his shoulders.
Reacting to instinct, Theo turned, grabbing my hand, spinning me around to pin me to the ground. He goes to throw a punch, and I flinched, embracing for the hard impact but... nothing comes.
I opened my eyes and saw Theo just an inch above me with his fist hovering inches from my face, his eyes now derange golden orbs. The sound of his heavy breathing slowed.
“Why do you always interfere?” He growled, retracting his fist to shake my shoulders.
“This has nothing to do with you, stay out of it!!!” His voice boomed. I close my eyes and laid still, not wanting to anger him further.
Theo watched me flinch from his aggressive actions, and a small sigh escapes from his mouth.
I opened my eyes to catch a glimpse of his striking eyes slowly changing, a soft whirlpool transition revealing the cold but familiar cold forest-green eyes from before.
Theo released his grip on me, rising to storm down the hallway toward the exit doors. Derrick followed close behind him. The crowd slowly dissipated, migrating back to the cafeteria.
Kash hurried over to me and helped me off the ground. We didn't say a single word to each other as we quietly walk down the hall toward the infirmary.
