In Kyiv there are two river-banks: right and left. infrastructure, economy and social life on the two banks are very different. the right bank is the historic part with all the main sights, on the left bank - mostly soviet gray boxes. mother's words refer to the fact, that it's quite far from their home, but she still thinks it's worth the hustle.
Kyiv citizens always refer to locations like this left-bank/right-bank.
