Before the zombie's teeth could connect with Ali's leg, it was flung away from her.
At first, she was confused by what had happened since she didn't actually hear when the windows shattered, and she didn't see the black-clad figures entered the room.
It was one of those dark figures that grabbed the zombie and soon enough, it was stabbing it in the head with practiced skill.
Both Ali and Gala were too stunned to say or do anything while the figures started slashing and slicing at the remaining zombies.
One of them cut the head of the nearby zombie and it started rolling towards the girls, but before it had the chance to reach them, the guy stopped it as if it were a runaway football and stabbed through the zombie's eyeball right through to its brain.
That was the moment Ali started throwing up, all of what she saw and felt became too much for her to bear, so she had to have some kind of release. As she was vomiting, Gala was trying to stop her shaking hands and try to process the situation.
While they were overwhelmed by what they saw and lived through, the guys who saved them finished up with the zombies and turned their focus on the girls.
"What's wrong with the two of you?! Are you idiots!?" yelled the guy who seemed to be the leader of the group without actually paying attention to the two trembling girls.
"Sir, sorry for intruding, but they are not part of our group. They have no weapons, and they don't seem to be from around here if you know what I mean." Another guy said pulling down his mask.
It turned out that all of them were wearing full body armor most of which seemed to be improvised from what they could find.
Upon hearing that, the leader seemed to calm down and his expressions changed to the one of intense contemplation.
"I guess we should take them to the base with us," he finally stated.
Since Ali was still sick, Gala decided it was her duty to figure out what was happening. She wanted to try to stop them from moving them because she was worried that if they went too far, they would lose any chance they had of going back home through the portal.
"Why can't we just stay here now that you killed all the zombies?" she asked trying to stop her voice from shaking.
"Ha-ha-ha, oh my. They are definitely not from around here!" said the blond guy who spoke earlier.
"This is the most dangerous place on this planet. The most infested city in the whole region, probably even the whole planet. I don't know where you are from, but I can tell you one thing. There will be more zombies and soon. If you want to live, you will come with us to the base. It's safe there," he said.
"Why should we trust you?" Gala asked, irritated.
"Because you have no other choice sweetheart," the guy said.
"Don't call me sweetheart!" she snapped, at him while anger colored her cheeks.
Before they could continue arguing, Ali lifted her head tiredly.
"We'll come with you, thank you. Thank you for saving our lives and for offering help." Ali said politely and that made them all quiet down while the guys just nodded their heads.
Gala looked at her trying to convey her thoughts, and they made a silent agreement that it would be safer to follow them since the portal disappeared.
As they started towards the safe place, they still had to go through the zombie-infested areas and what they saw was etched in their minds no matter how much they wished they could forget everything they saw as they saw it.
Ali saw a dark-haired zombie that probably used to be a handsome human, munching on a screaming guy. Although she wanted to go and save the poor victim she knew it was too late for him.
It was obvious by the fact that the zombie chewed his stomach open and was at that moment devouring his intestines. There was blood everywhere and the zombie kept devouring the intestines as if they were some delicious spaghetti. Ali couldn't help but think of that comparison and that made her sick, but she managed to stop herself from throwing up.
"Can't you help him!" Gala asked horrified. The moment she said that, the guy she was fighting with, pulled out his gun and shot the screaming human making a huge hole in his forehead.
That was when Gala charged towards him screaming: "How could you!? He was a human being, you insensitive bastard!"
He stopped her trashing hands in a surprisingly gentle manner, and that was when she started crying. As she was sobbing he told her the obvious truth that it was too late for the guy and that it was the only way to help him.
Horrified as she was, even Gala could feel the truth of his words, but that didn't make her feel any better. It was so difficult for her to cope with the sudden encounter with the world from everyone's nightmares.
People who lived in this parallel world, because it was obvious to both of the girls that they ended up in a parallel world, were so used to all the gruesome things happening around them, that they had time to adjust.
For them, the reality of a zombie-infested population wasn't anything new since it was clear they had spent a few years dealing with zombies.
For the girls, it was such a sudden change that their minds had no time to adjust, even the gloomy city of Slim didn't prepare them for what they were facing. It was just the first step in the horror story that now became their life.
Before reaching Slim they had been exploring the beautiful island that was so nice and peaceful that they couldn't believe they went from a dream come true to their worst nightmare in a matter of hours.
The guys told them that their base wasn't very close, so they had a lot of walking ahead of them, and they decided to fill the girls in on the events that led to what they could see.
The girls were surprised by their story because it wasn't at all what they expected it to be.
