All their lives they had seen zombie movies that told different stories of how zombie apocalypse first started. The stories ranged from manmade to natural viruses and many other possible causes. All of them seemed plausible to the girls since they weren't really familiar with the zombies so every explanation was a good enough for them.
What surprised them about this world's truth was that it made no sense at all. The leader, whose name turned out to be Kay, started explaining to them, once they were calm enough to listen.
"There were no zombie viruses or sounds that turned people into zombies, no alien life forms or anything like that. It just started happening suddenly and with no explanation. Scientists tried to figure it out but there was simply nothing to figure out. The zombies were healthy and their tests for any possible distortion they could think of came clean. Although it was a challenge to do the tests on zombies many scientists were willing to take the risk for the well-being of mankind but there was nothing. Many scientists died trying to find the cause and in turn find the cure but nothing helped." Kay said.
"What do you mean nothing helped? There had to be a cause that you haven't thought of. People can't just suddenly turn into zombies for no apparent reason." Gala said not even trying to contain her irritation.
The blond guy, Dominic, was the one who responded to her not-so-polite questions.
"Well, that is exactly what happened. People just started turning into zombies for no reason at all. We never know when or how it will happen. The only thing that became obvious was that if you get bit by a zombie you would turn, other than that we have no idea." Dominic said.
Kay pretended as if their interruption didn't even happen at all as he continued with his story.
"It was much more difficult to deal with the problem, to stop people from turning into zombies or stop the zombies since we had nothing to work with. We didn't know what started it nor how to end it. Every day we had to cope, hoping that one of our friends wouldn't turn, that we wouldn't have to kill them.
"For, you see, when you know what you are dealing with it makes it slightly easier to prepare, to deal with the problem. We have nothing but fear and restlessness. You have to live with the knowledge that one day your husband or wife may turn and eat your brains. YOU might turn one day and eat their brains, you never know," he stated grimly.
Ali didn't say anything during the whole exchange because she was completely absorbed in her own thoughts trying to understand what kind of world they had entered. It sounded even more dangerous than they assumed.
She couldn't help but wonder whether the rules of this world applied to Gala and herself. Did it matter that they were from another universe or were they as likely as anyone to become brain-eating zombies? Although from what she could see earlier the type of zombies they had on that version of Earth ate every body part, not only brains.
She couldn't help but wonder how they could stay safe in a world where nothing was for sure certain and no rules applied. It crossed her mind that Gala and she weren't fighters and that a zombie-infested world was the worst place for two untrained and physically not so fit girls to be.
So she kept trying to think through the options available to them. None of them seemed good and the best one, finding another portal and going back, seemed impossible.
"You seem to be familiar with the portals? Are there any other portals here? Why don't you just leave?" She asked when Kay finished his explanation.
"We found out about this portal only recently and two of our guys went in, but we have no idea what to expect, and we haven't seen any other portals. When we realized you two were not from around here, I started thinking about it and I think it might be our fault that you two are here. You see, the guys just followed some zombies when they found the portal, and we decided it would be good for them to go through it, but we didn't think about the consequences. Now I think that the way the portal works is that two people go into your world and two people come to our world," he said very quietly.
"You idiots!" Gala started screaming.
"You did this to us! You signed our death sentence!" she went on.
Kay seemed hurt by her words, but he did nothing to defend himself since he was the leader, the one who made all the decisions. He just stood there with a hurt expression on his face.
"Gala calm down," Ali said, knowing how bad Gala's temper could get but that didn't stop her.
She kept on screaming, and she started moving towards Kay with the intention of attacking him. That was when Dominic went to stand in front of Kay.
"Stop Spitfire! He didn't know that would happen. It is no one's fault, it was just an accident. And look! I am still alive, aren't I! The others are alive as well. As long as there is life there is hope so stop freaking out!" Dominic said sternly.
Surprisingly enough that stopped Gala although there was still fire coming out of her eyes.
"Guys, can you stop arguing. I think we are kind of surrounded." Ali said while her eyes darted around the zombies that appeared out of nowhere.
"This doesn't look good!" was the only thing Dominic had the time to say before the zombies started attacking, faster than ever before.
