Taking one last glance towards his friends and Gala, Dominic finally found enough courage, climbed over the railing, and jumped. The overpass was high enough that he knew for sure it would be enough.

He would die before he became the terrible brain-eating fiend and that made it a bit better, but what made it easier to die was also the fact that he had met Gala.

Before her, he had some good friends, but he was glad he could die with love in his heart and with the knowledge that in the horrible world he lived in, he was able to find the most precious thing ever. Even though it was for a short time, it meant the world to him.

"Gala" was the last thing that he said before his body hit the pavement with a loud crash.

His broken, still-human body was sprawled in an awkward position and there was no sign of him trying to lessen the fall.

It was usually a human instinct to extend their hands to try to lessen the blow, but he tried his best not to do that. He didn't want to risk surviving, because he knew it wouldn't be in a human form.

His attempt was more than successful, the body was broken in so many places that even if he had become a zombie there wouldn't have been any possibility of him moving. However, there was nothing left in that broken shell that was once Dom's body, nothing human nor zombie.

The others were alerted to what happened only by the unearthly scream that escaped Gala's throat after seeing the man she loved flying to his death. They gathered around her in search of an explanation, but she was in no shape to speak or do anything but sob and shake as if her body was falling apart.

Finally, she managed to point her finger towards the railing, and while the others went to check it out, she fell down on her knees and started wailing like a wounded wolf. It felt to her like there were not enough tears for her to cry out.

There was a strange dullness covering her mind, and she didn't seem to be able to think clearly. The only thing she could feel was pain in her heart that didn't allow her tears to dry out.

She never cried so openly, because she always thought that people looked terrible when they cried. Only in the movies did they look perfect, as one by one, tears slowly streamed down their cheeks, in real life, it was much messier.

Her tears were streaming down her face, but not one by one but many of them at the same time. Her nose started running and in general her face was a mess. Her eyes became extremely red and puffy and there was nothing beautiful about her crying, but she didn't care that she looked terrible.

To her, at that moment, nothing mattered except for the fact that Dom was dead. She would never again hear his voice or see his face. With time she would forget the sound of his voice and the way he looked and it would be like he died twice, the second time dying in her memory.

It was not fair that what they had together, was less than a day and yet it managed to break her heart to see him go.

The world they had stumbled into was cruel, but then again she wasn't sure if she would have ever found that kind of connection in her own world.

The first thing Kay saw when he looked over the railing was his best friend's crushed skull and it was a sight that would forever stay etched in his brain along with the site of his dead family. There was so much blood all around Dom's body and there was even more, pouring out of him creating huge blood pools.

Even from that high, it was clear that most of the bones were broken from the strange position in which the body was. Knowing that his friend would rather die than become a monster they had to fear didn't make Kay feel any better. His friend was still gone, and he was never coming back.

The one person who helped him recover from the numb state he was in after he lost everything, died and there was nothing left for him. He would still protect the people who depended on him but there was nothing to make his life easier, no one to make him feel better when the weight of the world fell on his shoulders. There would be no one to remind him why life was worth living.

He had lost a lot before, but somehow losing Dom seemed like the last straw. It was incomprehensible to him how life could be so cruel. After seeing so much and losing so much, he still hoped that one day it would all stop, and they would be able to truly live once more and not just survive.

However, after seeing his friend's blood soaking the pavement, those dreams dispersed and there was nothing left, just never-ending emptiness.

Upon feeling a gentle hand squeezing his shoulder, he realized that he was crying and that Ali was trying to comfort him. Even though he let her hold him, he knew there was no comfort left.

Ali knew that there was nothing she could say that would make Kay feel better, but she still wanted to try to at least offer some support. She felt sorry for him, especially after learning about his life's story. It felt like life was too cruel towards a guy who didn't deserve it.

From what she could observe, he was a protector and generally a nice guy. Well, as nice as anyone could be after surviving all the awful and unimaginable things he had been through.

Ali had never lost anyone before, and she couldn't even imagine how it would feel to lose all that mattered to her. But upon seeing someone else's suffering she did her best to help out.

She would have gone to try to calm Gala down, but she knew her well enough to know that what she needed was some alone time.

In contrast, Ali felt that the last thing Kay needed was to be alone, so she decided to be there for him although they didn't really know each other. For Ali, it didn't matter if you knew the person or not, the important thing was to try to offer the support because it might mean something to them.

Soon enough, she started to hesitate, but before she could move away from Kay, he turned around and hugged her tightly crying on her shoulder. She held him and ran soothing circles on his back trying to give him all the love and support that she could feel he needed because it was what good friends did after all.

After all, he did save her life, and she wanted to show how much she appreciated the amazing guy Kay was.

It's sad, but it was the brave thing to do for him to die before hurting the people he cared about.

In here you can find different short stories that talk about what could have happened. They talk about the things that did happen in another reality and how that affected the people. Some of the stories talk about things that we consider impossible and others talk about things that might have happened if just one person made a different decision, taken a different path. You will see many different things that don't seem related to each other but actually, everything is connected since these are all the realities that could have been.
