The water in the pond turned into a big tidal wave which started hurled towards him. Darren couldn't move to act in time so he closed his eyes to brace for impact! A small drop of water fell on his forehead which left him perplexed for a minute. Darren then turned behind him to see Toby shouted out a spell which sucked all the water by small warp holes. When all the water gone, Toby shown a face of disapproval and shaking his head at him.
"What the hell was that?" Toby shouted at Darren, putting his brown bracelet back on. That brown bracelet seemed to be his aura suppression wristband.
"Toby, not too loud. People will hear us from here..." Amelia walked behind Toby with a shocked face.
"I'm sorry, Amelia but what kind of mage is careless enough to do something reckless like this?" Toby commented.
"I'm sorry, it just my device.... It's not working and I just almost puke my guts out for keeping that damn thing on too long!" Darren looked down in disappointment for not having a great handle of his magic.
Amelia walked over to Darren then kneels down to check on him and asked, "Are you okay? Let me see your Aura suppression wristwatch."
Darren pulled out his wristwatch where he kept it in his pocket. He puts it in Amelia's hand as she went to see what was wrong with his device. Watching her trying to troubleshoot his wristwatch from top to bottom, Amelia tried to smash it on the ground. Darren grabbed her hand fast before Amelia could do any damage to his wristwatch.
"What the heck are you trying to do? I need that!" Darren shouted at Amelia.
"Sorry, I thought giving that device a hit a little will get to work. That works for me sometimes." Amelia shrugged and puts down the device to the ground. She brought out her purse to rummage it to search for something. Pulling out a black wristband out of the purse, like Darren's wristwatch as Amelia gave it to him. "I always carry a spare with me. I hope this one would work better for you."
Darren glanced at the wristband for a good minute to see if it fits him. He slapped it on his wrist then turned on the device to wire the settings to his fittings. Darren fiddled around with the device until he can get an Aura Suppression Level at his own comfort. At, least around 48% is good for him.
Darren took a huge breathe in relief that at least he is feeling better now. Toby is nearby to take out something out of his bag which is a flute gave it to Amelia. Amelia took the flute from him, walking to a sick tree near the pond. There were little, or no leaves left on the tree branches. It looked like it is on its last legs until Amelia played her flute. A peaceful melody filled into the air as white mist surrounding it. All the signs of death on the tree disappeared as the leaves stopped falling and grew. Darren watched Amelia casting her spell, making sure that there were no non-supernatural people around.
When she finishes playing, Amelia puts on her pink wristband back on her wrist. Turning around, she faced Toby and Darren with a bright smile on her face.
"Thanks for giving me a spare wristband." Darren told Amelia when Amelia turned to him brushed her hair back, pushing it away from her face.
"It's no problem. We Mages and Witches have to stick together!" Amelia chimed when Toby puts back on his bracelet.
"Especially when I wasted my magic on someone that's so amateurish like you. What the hell was that? That's someone that has a magical skill, but of level six!" Toby spat at Darren.
Bitting his lip, Darren bowed his dead down in embarrassment.
"Ignore him. He just cranky from but of that traveling we had to do." Amelia explained.
"Uh... No problem." Darren took her apology, but he wished that Toby is the one that apologized to him, rather than her.
Darren got to know Amelia and Toby a little better after the three of them talked to each other. The group walked from the pond to head back to the festival grounds. The group talked about music and a little of their home backgrounds. Darren didn't give too much of the details of his background since he is a private person. He is at least glad that two magic users had seen his magic going out of control instead of two non-magic users. If non-magic users knew that he is using his magic, it would cause a hysteria among the public.
The group stopped by some booths where people were getting ready for the festival. Darren saw someone waved at them as they saw Nicola. She pulled Amelia over to check out a booth where a light-tanned man is "performing" magic. Darren rolled his eyes at the man when he saw him. This man had been coming here almost every year playing the same con. Every year, this magician always did the same disappearing card trick. In the past, Darren remembered the trick. The magician showed that he had no card in his hand. Then in two minutes later, the magician pulls out the card from the sleeve of his white shirt.
Darren looked at the man in disgust. This man who is making a lot of money off of clueless non-magical people. Darren never liked magicians. Due the fact these false 'mages' claim they are magical, they don't even have a lick of magic in their bones at all! It pisses him off that Outsiders (non-magical people) treating their magic as a joke. But, Darren wouldn't mind a magician who is actually a REAL magic user like himself. Not a wannabe. Darren continued to watch this fake 'mage's' performance with Amelia, Nicola, and Toby.
"Now, I will make this card disappear! Watch closely everyone!" The Magician said.
"Here it goes again, same card trick. Everyone knows where it's going to go. How are people amazed by this? Damn Magicians. " Darren thought to himself while he watches the man performed. He hears Amelia and Nicola giggle at the magic performance like school girls.
"This guy doing magic. Seriously? He looks childish.," Nicola snickered to Amelia.
"Totally." Amelia replied to Nicola.
Darren is at least pleased that the girls and him shared the same opinions. It still baffled him why Outsiders pretended to be Supernaturals. The only exception that didn't bother him was for Halloween. At least on that day, the Supernaturals can get away with not being normal.
Darren noticed that Nicola took off her green wristband and her eyes glowed a lavender color. He observed that Nicola is about to use her powers and knew she isn't a magic user like Toby, Amelia, or him. Nicola is something else but Darren could put a finger on what she is. It didn't hit him until he noticed Nicola is waving her finger as a small open water bottle floated in the air! He observed Nicola using her powers to direct the water bottle to be on the magician's head. Nicola's powers were unique, and he guessed that she could have telekinesis as a power.
The audience saw the water bottle move in the air and thought it is a part of the show. Darren watched as Nicola released her telekinetic grip on the water bottle. Water poured all over the magician! The magician's eyes were wide in shock as he yelled in confusion. The audience laughed at him so did Nicola and Amelia too. But, Toby didn't like what Nicola did. He turned his attention off his phone and scolded the girl.
"Nicola, are you're trying to get us kicked out before we even made our mark here?!" Toby barked at Nicola.
"You saw nothing. It was all a part of the act. Serves him right! He should think twice before running around claiming to be magical and shit." Nicola said as she is fixing her kinky Afro hair, putting it in place.
"Chill, Toby. It was a joke. She wasn't harming anyone!" Amelia defended.
"It doesn't matter! You could've got us all in trouble and we don't want that to happen..." Toby said to the two girls.
Despite Darren actually not minding Nicola's prank, he knew what Toby is saying was right. He didn't have the guts to use his powers in public, anyway. His powers were way too unstable to be out in the open like that. Still, he felt a little burning rage of jealousy inside of him. When he saw Amelia and Toby handling their powers with ease earlier.
Darren thought to himself, "Why is it so easy for them to handle their magic powers? I'm too pathetic enough to stop a damn tidal wave!"
Not too far from the distance, Darren snapped out of his depressive thoughts. He saw his friend, Chantel who is sitting on the park bench. She sat with a well-dressed proper short chubby guy chatting with him. Darren excused himself heading over to the two of them.
"Hey Chantel. Who is your friend?" Darren asked.
Chantel paused the conversation with the chubby guy. She got up from her seat then introduced the guy she is sitting with, "Darren, meet Roland Blanchet. He is a foreign exchange student from France. Roland, meet my friend, Darren."
"It is a pleasure to meet you. Chantel spoke very well about you. You must be a good friend of hers." Roland gave Darren a firm handshake.
Darren glared the young man in suspicion. He didn't like how Roland sounded at all, judging how he shook Darren's hand. Darren knew a handshake isn't a good indicator on how good a person is. But it is a hint of who a person is by the first meeting.
Roland looked well dressed in business attire with a white shirt with a polka-dot orange bow tie. The outfit looked so funny since the bow tie didn't match his navy blue business suit. Darren thought he looked odd, but at least it is normal odd in his mind.
"Nice to meet you. I guess...."
" You're a wonderful friend enough to join our event at Mount Ridge Bridge University. The Rise of the Light is always looking for new members." Roland praised which made Darren cringed.
" Well, I wanna to know more about your hippy hipster type group so..." Darren spoke bluntly but attempted to cover it as a poor joke. Roland's nauseous friendly tone is getting on his nerves.
"Darren! Don't be so rude!" Chantel scolded then turned to Roland who didn't look offended, "Sorry about that, he can be like that sometimes. We’re interested in learning more about your group."
"Ah, nothing to be worried about. I'm not offended at all. I must take my leave, Ms. Delisle. I will see you two at our event." Roland straighten up his bow tie and shirt as he made his leave from the two.
Chantel hits Darren's arm as he winced a little in pain when she hit him, "Ow! Ji-a! It was only a joke about the hipster thing!"
"Next time, don't make crappy jokes like that." Chantel walked with Darren to meet up with their friend, Jesse where Darren's bike is at.
Darren still thought about the interaction between Roland and him. There is something about Roland that he couldn't trust. He believed there is a bigger agenda going on behind that sweet friendly face. Heading back to where Darren’s bike is, Darren noticed that Jesse was waiting and had his bass guitar. His friend handled over his bass guitar in the case to him.
"Here you go, man. Let's go to the other side of the park so I can shoot some hoops." Jesse suggested to Chantel and Darren.
"Works for me." Chantel nods as Darren got on his bike then looks back at Jesse.
"Yeah, let's go." Darren answered back.
The three friends headed to the other side of the park to where the basketball park is. Darren breathed in relief as at least this day isn't a total disaster for him.
