I recently saw a tweet that read; “it sucks that there's this common belief that you have to be good at a hobby to justify spending your time on it. I think we could all benefit from doing more stuff that we're maybe kind of bad at.”

*deep breath* Omg yessssss~ this, this, absolutely this!

Friends, let’s discuss how important this is and how it reminded me of the many comments I get that are essentially along the lines of; “I want to write, but I’m too bad at it.”

WRITE ANYWAYS!

As the above tweet said, we could all benefit from doing more stuff that we’re maybe kind of bad at. This is so freaking true because, here’s the thing, I never thought I’d do or get anywhere with my writing. I didn’t pick up pen and paper one day and say, “yes, I am the best writer in the world and I am going to be a best selling author so I’m going to put so much freaking time into my stories from now on!”

Nah, I wrote as a hobby. I wrote for fun. I WAS NOT GOOD AT WRITING! I didn’t even understand how to write, I mean, I wrote my stories like movie scripts so it was along the lines of;

Twoony: blah blah blah
She waved her hands around.

Reader: blah blah blah
They gave Twoony the finger.

That was how I originally wrote. Twas absolutely horrendous, but I kept writing all the time. I read. I wrote. I learned. I got better, not because of an audience or because people were praising me, simply because it was a hobby and I had fun.

My audience came from pure dumb luck. Someone read Speak the Truth, nominated it for a contest on Wattpad where it didn’t win, but it did get an honorable mention, then all of a sudden I had an audience. Then I was contacted by Tapas and I managed to transfer to Tapas. Mind you, I had been writing online for 8 or 9 years by that point. 8 or 9 years I didn’t get anywhere with my stories.

Imagine if someone tried to tell me that I shouldn’t be writing because I wasn’t good. Imagine if I was made to feel that I had to justify why I wrote so much in my spare time simply because I wasn’t good at it. I wouldn’t be where I’m at today. I never would have realized that I could make writing my career and all that time I spent on a hobby actually turned into something, HOWEVER!

Your hobby doesn’t have to turn into anything to justify why you do it.

I like drawing too, but I am absolute shit at it. I like playing games, but I am absolute shit at them. I am trying to learn guitar, which I am also absolute shit at. But ain’t nobody telling me that I can’t spend my time on any of those hobbies simply because I’m bad at them. I’m learning new things, expanding my horizons and, most importantly, I’m having fun.

I guess this turned into a sort of lecture, but whatever, enjoy your hobbies! Who cares if you’re shit at them? You’ll keep practicing and get better or you’ll keep being shit at them and not giving a fuck because you’re having fun and that’s the god damn point.

This was short and a spur of the moment blog, but that’s the point of blogs, right? Am I blogging correctly? Who knows! Who cares!
