In the forest, they laid in their large number. Scurrying around undetected. Leaves rustled as they marched along. These creatures were green in color carrying short clubs while wearing little clothing.
On their heads were ears: pointy like a branch on opposites sides of a tree. Their brains unequipped and their weapons primitive setting their sights on the Argracia village.
Back at the house. Jenna and Quant arrived from the talk with the old man. They walked through the door to find Aiko sitting at the table enjoying a meal. Her smile as bright as usual as she munched away without care. The light filled the room, Aiko turned to where it shined. To her surprise, Quant and Jenna were watching her eat while quietly chuckling.
"BIG BROTHEERRRRRR!"
She dropped her spoon as she ran towards Quant. Keeping her smile on her face, Aiko reached Quant's legs and hugged him tightly. Too short to reach his waist she hugged his legs with her facing his head.
"Where were you? When I checked the room you weren't there. Are you okay now?"
Jenna adored seeing Aiko so happy. As a parent, this is what she wanted most. Aiko didn't have friends or siblings growing up. So it pleased Jenna to know that Quant is a figure she sees as a brother.
"Yeah, I'm good. You wanna learn magic with me? We can burn down the village"
"YEAAAHH LET'S DO IT! THAT WOULD BE COOOL"
"NO! Don't teach my daughter arson."
Quant and Aiko laughed at Jenna's reaction. They went to sit down at the table. Aiko sat on Quant's lap awaiting her lesson while stuffing her face with bread.
"What exactly do you know about magic?"
"Absolutely nothing"
"I know magic!. It makes things go BOOM! Or WOOSH. Mommy what are we going to make go BOOM!"
Aiko's answer made Quant burst into laughter while Jenna's facepalmed. Aiko continued to stuff her mouth eagerly waiting.
"Alright, I'll explain from the beginning."
To summarize, magic is broken down into nine ranks. The first rank is for beginners, An example ranges from a simple fire spell that hovers over the user's hand to one that can light a campfire.
They are usually simple cast but have the least effect in a battle of mages.
The ranks rise until rank nine which is the highest rank. Spells range from catastrophic explosions that can blow up a city. To wide range healing spells that can heal a kingdom's entire army of three hundred thousand troupes.
Higher rank magic doesn't always mean more destructive power. A higher rank dictates more magic power is needed to activate the spell.
Mana is the source within our body that allows us to use magic. Mana is transformed into an element when we cast a spell. These elements are what we call magic.
Few people possess a high amount of mana. It is solely decided by birth whether you have a large mana source. That's why talent is important when it comes to magic. The deeper your mana source the more spells you can cast.
"I see, the more mana you have the higher the rank of magic you can cast."
"Yes, you're getting it now."
Elements are separated into three categories. Basic elements, Special elements, and Unique elements. Basic elements are fire, water, earth, and wind. These elements are called basic because they're common to acquire.
Using magic requires one to have an affinity for a certain element. The more elemental affinity one posses the more elements they can use. Having one is common. Two is rare and having three will make you be considered special.
Special elements are rarer. Like lightning, dark, light, space, etc.
Unique elements are outstanding as only one person can have an element in a generation. These elements like the name suggests are so rare that only a person can have them at a time. The people who use this kind of magic are powerful beings who are treated like kings for their talent. The downside, however, is that they cannot have an affinity for another element. They are limited to that one element.
" Mr. Quant, I'm surprised you don't know anything about magic. Especially since you have a unique element."
" I see, In this world, my system is looked upon as unique magic."
He whispered to himself in relief. If his system is ever discovered he can nonchalantly explain that it's unique magic. He still wanted to keep it a secret until he became stronger
He had to begin his lesson. He carried Aiko from his lap, placing her on the table.
"Mr.Quant. You already have a unique element. You can't use any other element. I don't think I can teach you."
"Don't worry about that. Just show me what you know."
Quant spoke casually. He knows that he can use magic. Although she thought the system was a unique element. It is something entirely different.
"I'll show you an example. Put your hand out, slowly concentrate mana onto your palm. Imagine fire on the base of your palm. When you're done say the chant 「Cast Fire 」"
A bright orange flame appeared on Jenna's palm levitating above her hand. Its warmth could be felt around the table. Aiko's eyes widened from the spectacle because to her this small flame was magnificent.
Quant, however, had to deal with another pressing issue.
[System has recorded fire attribute]
[Would you like to learn fire attribute?]
This surprise intrigued him. The system didn't say it recorded the「Cast Fire 」spell but instead, it said the fire attribute. It seems seeing one spell of the basic element allows the system to record the entire attribute.
"Yes"
[Fire attribute saved in the database]
"Mr. Quant you spaced out there. Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. I see it my turn to try the spell."
"Yes but don't be disappointed if it doesn't work out the first time. It took me two months to learn this myself."
Quant did as instructed making sure he stood back away from the table. He did not want to injure them incase the magic goes haywire
"「Cast Fire 」"
The fire burst from his hand creating a pillar of flame. He had put to much magic into his spell. Before the spell, burnt the house, he quickly stopped channeling mana into the flame. Jenna could not fathom what she just witnessed. Her face went into shock once again. It seems this man of mystery carries an abundance of tricks each more astonishing from the last.
Jenna became paler than a ghost. A unique element holder with exceptional mana who knows nothing about magic. Who is capable of learning other spells on his first try. Just who is this man? She thought.
She looked at his face after he put out the flame. Only to find an unexpected treasure. His eyes sparkled with excitement, his smirk smug along with his fist clenched. She can only wonder what he could be thinking to make him so ecstatic.
Quant had realized that he had just taken the first step of his journey. He knew that his goal was far., that obstacles would come his way, comrades would join his quest, companions would perish along the way, and victory will be in his grasp. The thought of this adventure is what excited him. He couldn't wait to walk the path he had set himself on.
"WOW, THAT WAS SO COOL! Can we burn the village now?"
"Yeah, now we can go."
"Excuse me! No one is burning the village down. Understood!"
"Yes, ma'am."
They both said in a disheartened voice. Jenna couldn't help but chuckle at them. This man who she thought was a hobo brought happiness to her and her daughter's life. Certainly an unexpected turn of events.
Suddenly
[Warning: Intruders detected! ]
[Host should prepare for battle]
This message alarmed Quant. It was to abrupt. He had no time to prepare himself.
"System how many intruders are there? Give me all information on these intruders."
He stood up facing the door as if he expected company. Jenna and Aiko were bewildered by this behavior. They knew something must be wrong.
[Intruder Count: 30]
[Intruder race: Goblin]
[Distance: approximately 200m]
Quant began to think of a strategy. Luckily he had just learned magic. He no longer needed protection.
"Mr. Quant is everything okay?"
"No, it's not, get ready to move."
[Host is encouraged to fight]
[Mission: Exterminate Goblins]
[Reward: 500 EXP]
He remembered what the system told him about reaching level ten. This opportunity can only be considered fortunate. He needed to reach level ten in order to use system skills without fainting.
Loud footsteps could be heard coming closer to the house. It got louder as time progressed until...
*BANG*
The door slammed open revealing the perpetrator. It was from Jack. He came through the door panting. Tired from running around the village.
"Grandfather, what's going on?"
"Get to the barn in the south! Goblins are attacking the village!"
