"you can do it Jaye" I whispered to myself before opening the quiz booklet. Skimming through the entire quiz, I was utterly lost already. Whatever Rebecca had taught me was completely erased from my mind. Focus, remember the theory, you went over this a few minutes ago encouraging myself, gripping the pencil tighter as if it was going help me pass this quiz. I began writing when the pencil point broke so, I took another one out of my bag. The teacher was staring at me as if I was cheating off Rebecca. Deciding to ignore Mr. Wong, I went back to the math quiz with a new pencil in hand. I scribble nonstop my mind suddenly knowing the answers to the questions. I was the first to finish the quiz and confidently handed to Mr. Wong who scoffed skeptical at my answers. I can't explain it but I was confident I did alright. Feeling confident, I walked out of the building.
The next day we got our quiz back.
"Ms. Lee, you can use improvement" what the hell, I was confident I did well. Now dreading to see my score, I slowly flipped over the paper.
"Wow" Rebecca said and I flinched.
"What do you .. oh my gosh" I looked down to find a written in bold red ink an 83% score. I couldn't formulate words and started blabbing random syllabus.
"The teacher is right, you can use improvement" disregarding their critique I jumped off my seat. I was on cloud nine, this is the highest I've ever score in math and nonetheless fucking calculus. Bitch, I'm smart a.f.
"Thank you so fuckin' much ...oh my... wow!" I thanked Rebecca brushing some loose curls out of my face. "I wasn't expected an 83, hell even a 65 would be hard to believe!" I gleam in happiness I have to show Camilla and Dee. This was my last class for the day so I walked out of school waiting them in the parking lot.
"Girl, why aren't you dressed for the dinner gala?" Camila came down the stairs wearing a knee length pastel pink dress with tiny white flowers decoration. It hugged her waist tight while it sway on the bottom. Her face was done with subtle make up look that emphasized her cheekbones.
"The what?" Giving her a confused stare over her elegant dress. "Girl, I just score an 83 on Calculus quiz!" I said flaunting my quiz on her face.
"Yay, Congrats! I always believed you can do it. Now, can you go get dress, we're going be late. Dee is almost done dressing up" Camila ordered snapping her fingers. Still confused what's going on, I finally asked her.
"What dinner gala?" Camila dramatic gasped that could be heard across the parking lot.
"Don't tell me you forgot. Jaye, gosh tonight's parents and students dinner is like parents teacher conference minus the conference part. It's an opportunity for parents to meet the new semester staff and educators and also, for the seniors class to mingle" her eyes gleam full of excitement.
"My mom has work till midnight. Guess I can't go" I shrugged not caring about missing the social event. Dee descended from the stairs in a shimmery blue suit. I opened my phone snapping a picture of her quickly before she could refused.
"Damn, you look dashing" I whistled. "I'm going take the bus home. You guys have fun and take lots of pictures!"
"No, you have to come Jaye" Camila grabbed my hands tight.
"Please Jaye, come with us don't leave me alone with this one" Dee lightly smacked Camila's head.
"Camila told me this some parents event. My mom is working the night shift tonight -"
"Your mom doesn't need to be there, it not mandatory. You can join our family's table." Dee offered.
"yes! My mom loves you like her own daughter. It'll be fun" Camila pouted making puppy eyes at me. It did sound kinda fun and its Friday that I can sleep all weekend long. Plus, I did great in my quiz calling for a little 'motivation celebration'.
"Alright, i'll go only if mom's allows me" I dialed her number asking for permission.
"Are you sure they can drop you home? What time does it end?" She asked over the phone in a concerned voice.
"yes, Camila's parent will take care of me. It should end around 9pm. Don't worry" I reassured her.
"Oh babygirl, i'm so sorry about missing these activities with you because of work. I wish I can attend and not work" she angrily said.
"its okay mommy, i'm sure they will be other events later on the year" I told her lifting her mood a bit.
"Ok be safe, and call me when you get home. Love you"
"Okay, me too" I dialed end button.
"Alright let's go. I call shot gun" I ran to Dee's car getting on the passenger seat. From the window, I saw Geralt getting in the car with his father a really tall man with receding hairline. Geralt was wearing a light tan suit with white shirt and blue tie. He looked angry slamming the door shut. Disregarding them, Dee got on the wheel and zoomed through traffic while blasting music.
"Dee are your parents will be there too" I shouted over the music.
"Unfortunately. You'll meet their stuck up ass soon" she sighed.
"Hurry Dee, they're waiting for us" Camila snapped her fingers.
"GPS says 26 minutes but I'll get there in 15" she stepped on the gas going above speed limit while 'All Summer Long' by Kid Rock played on the radio. We sang together over the loud speaker.
Seeing familiar faces of students arriving with their parents. We parked while the song was still blasting. I jumped off the car singing the lyrics from the top of my lungs. I saw Geralt and his father arrived a minute after us and Nic was standing next to what I assume his parents in a black suit and tie. Rebecca also arrived in a black SUV wearing a short classy dress matching heels with her model mother and an average looking older man. Her mother took hold of his hand, assuming that Rebecca's father. She did not resembled him instead taking after her mother.
The song still played inside the car and unison singing the chorus getting off the car.
It feels weird seeing everyone out of their school uniform dressed so elegant, meanwhile there I was in my school uniform and white vans. Suddenly feeling very subconscious of my inappropriate attire slumping my shoulders and hugging myself failing to hide.
"Guys, I think I should go home, I'm not properly dressed for this"
"You look better than half of these girls wearing tons of make up and in heels they can't even walk" Dee said pointing at current scene of teens girls trying to balance walking in heels. A giggle escaped my mouth at the hilarious sight. Very few girls dominated high heels including Rebecca.
"C'mon lets go to my parents"
Camila walked in front of us toward the entrance to redhead couple.
"Oh my gosh Jayelina I haven't seen you in such long time. How's your mother? Don't tell me she's at work, Gillsel always a workcholic" Said who I assumed was Camilas mother.
"Hii Mr. and Mrs. Roberts, Yeah she is. its my fault tho, I forgot to tell her about this dinner" I politely greeted her mother and father.
"Jaye, you don't have to be so proper with us, we're family" without warning embrace me in a motherly hug my face buried in her bossoms. Now I know who Camila inhereented her height. Both her parents were really tall.
"And these are my parents Jaye" Dee said shyly to two tall older people. Her father and Camila's dad looked very alike with similar red hair.
"Hello, nice to meet you" I waved at them, her mother smiled and her dad nodded. Seeing everyone with their parents brought back memories of when I was in grade school sitting alone in school events while the other kids had parents.
"Sweetie don't feel left out because Giselle couldn't come. Tonight I have two daughters, let's go inside" Camila's mother said noticing my discomfort. Camila extended her arm guiding us to the main door.
"Miss, you can't come in without proper attire: this is an only dress and suit event." These security guard at door said stopping me from entering.
"Oh c'mon. I guess is not meant to be. I'll take a taxi home" I groaned feeling like an idiot in agreeing to attend this stupid dinner.
"Sir, can you please make an exception. She's already here" Camila begged using her best polite tone.
"Rules are rules. I'm just following them. Sorry" He then pointed at the 'Required Attire Guideline' sign.
"What's the matter Jaye?" Geralt and Nic came from behind us with concern looks.
"They won't let me in 'cause I'm not wearing a dress" I told them.
"What. That's stupid. Let me talk to the guard" Geralt storm out I tried stopping him but he's too fast. "My father is the headmaster of the school. He excuses her attire and would greatly appreciate if you look the other way on this one." I can't believe Geralt pulled the "my daddy school" card yet I'm not surprised around rich kids.
"Listen kid, I don't care whose your daddy, like I told her before rules are rules! No dress no entry and this applies to everyone." The guard spoke crossing his arms.
"What kind of establishment denies entry based clothing? I think the rule is prejudice against others..."
"Jaye, im going go get my dad so he can speak with the manager. Stay put" his face turning red of anger. At this point people were staring and already feeling humiliated in front of these privilege people now, adding embarrassment from their glares.
"Stop, its fine. Its my fault for not coming prepare"
"Is unfair that you're not allow in for something so tribal as clothing" Nic said supporting Geralt argument.
"Hi I -" We turned around to a small voice belonging to a familiar brunette slim girl. Geralt cut her off mid-sentence.
"Not now, we're in the middle of something"
"Sorry but I couldn't help overhear you guys. I happen to pack an extra dress. You're more than welcome to wear it Jaye" The girl smiled at me. Oh I remember her, she's Carlotta's friend the one with the crush on Geralt!
"really! I could kiss you right now" Geralt exclaimed. Boy, be careful what you say she might take the offer I thought to myself. "Thank you so much ummm..." Geralt flustered trying to remember her name.
"Sasha" She replied. Thankful to Geralt for asking her name because even I forgot.
"Thank you Sasha. You saved me. I will make sure to take good care and return it back to you dry clean" I kindly said taking a small red dress from her.
"Dont worry about it. Keep it" she said sincerely.
"Lets go get you dress. We wasted enough time" Camila was on her heel taking my hand.
"excuse me Sir.She got a dress now can she go in to change?"
"No dress, no going in. I can't let her in without a dress." He shrugged this time earning few curse words from Camila. "Son of a bit-"
"Ok. thanks, let's go Cam" I pulled her away before he called the cops of us for harassment.
"Change in my car, Camila go with her. I'll stay outside" Dee offered walking over the car. Once inside, I stripped off my uniform and slipping the short dress. As I predicted, It hugged my chest and waist tightly, loose around hips. This will do, I thought folding my uniform and putting inside my backpack. When I was about to come out of the car I looked down seeing my surgery scar exposed.
"Ah Camila can you come inside" I called out. Maybe she can fix it or hide it. "My scar .." I didn't have to finish for her to understand and start working in hiding it. Unfortunately the dress was too low cut to hide it.
"Wait here. I'll be right back" Camila said slipping out of the car. I sat there patiently regretting coming to this stupid dinner. Within a minute, the door swung open revealing Camila was back with a tan color jacket.
"Put this over the dress" handing me the jacket that reached past my hips. I wondered where she got this from because it was at least two sizes bigger on me.
