You know, during my initial play through of Sun, I never thought much of Ilima, only that he was a bit of an underused character that felt more present just to introduce us to the ideas surrounding SUMO's Island Challenge structure. He gave you the impression that Team Skull wasn't to be taken seriously, he's there to show that Captains were trainers too, in spite of mostly not really battling them during the coarse of the game and pretty much guided you to his trial.
It wasn't until my second play through that I started giving him more thought, given that the captains are hand picked by the Kahunas themselves, the fact that Ilima was picked, kind of says something about Hala and his standards. Ilima struck me as a golden child, someone with a lot of know how and natural ability, though perhaps not too street smart as much as he is book smart which is something that stands out between him and Guzma, whom failed to become the trial captain he wished to be.
We also get hints that Hala's son left because of the inherent pressures with being the son of a Kahuna, so it always felt like Hala, while having the persona of a gentle, caring Kahuna, also has a strict standard when it comes to the important roles one might have to play within the isles and their traditions, which makes me think his character is a bit more layered than he appears in game, traditions being a bit of a HOT button topic for him and all XD
