I haven't been able to look James in the eye since we took our seats.
"Champagne?"
I shook my head. "No thank you, but can I get a glass of water? No lemon please."
The flight attendant smiled and reached into the cart for a glass.
"Thanks so much," I said as she handed it to me.
I turned back to the screen where I was scrolling through movies. I rarely watched movies, so I used to look forward to plane rides so I would have an excuse to watch some of the classics and not be so confused at pop culture references, but I've started to run low on classic movies I haven't seen.
"What are you watching? Do you want to watch it together?"
I pretended my heart didn't just jump into my throat and shrugged. "I don't know. What do you recommend?"
"What genre? I know you don't really like action," he said, scrolling through his own selection of movies.
"Action is fine! What do you want to watch?"
He raised his eyebrows. "Well let's see. Have you seen Kill Bill?"
"Yeah, but I couldn't finish the second one because it was too gruesome for me."
"No way! Let's finish it!"
"No thanks."
"Okay fine. What about Die Hard?"
"Seen it. It's Jake Peralta's favorite movie. How could I not?"
He laughed. "Of course. How could I even ask that? How about The Matrix?"
"Oh no I haven't. How is it?"
"I mean, it's a classic, so it's pretty awesome." James leaned over to tap the movie on my screen, resting his hand on my thigh.
He immediately retracted it. "Sorry," he mumbled, "I forget there's not an armrest with these seats."
I coughed to cover up my blush. Every time we start talking, I just see him as a friend, but as soon as he touches me or gets even remotely close to my physical being, I just lose my mind or something.
"And! Before I forget! I got you a pair of wireless earbuds after you broke your headphones. Wedding gift." He smiled and pulled out a little black box from his bag. "Let me know how they feel."
"Thanks," I mumbled and started peeling away the plastic. I internally rolled my eyes at myself. I needed to get it together.
But the memory of waking up next to him was still too fresh on my mind.
James reached over to brush my hair behind my ear. I felt shivers run down my spine. "Your ears are so small. Do they fit?"
I coughed again. "Yeah they feel great. Thanks."
He leaned back into his seat. "Great! You ready to start the movie then?"
I snuggled into my own seat as the production credits flashed on the screen. The lights in the cabin dimmed at that moment too, signaling nighttime at our destination. The atmosphere suddenly felt colder, so I pulled my blanket up to my chin and wrapped it around my shoulders. Even though I had just woken up a few hours ago, I felt sleep taking over me once again as Keanu Reeves was introduced on the screen.
