Jeffries studies an Automaton, and has a conversation.
(Sorry for the weird cut-off in this one; when I originally wrote this a few years back, I wasn't thinking about issues or pauses, and was trying to make it all one continuous story.)
In 1847, things changed in America. Harold Shellers, a noted oil baron and engineer, invented the Automaton, changing everyday life. Now, in 1860, Thomas Jeffries finds that Harold, his adoptive father is dead, and has left for him a strange Automaton unlike any other.
