'The Royal Family used to rule the werewolf world.'
Pictures filled her mind, castles, jewels, and people.
'They ruled in secret, the rest of the world seeing only a royal family. But through envy, the secret became a rumor, and humans began to fear the royal family.'
Darkness covered the area, followed by fire, fear, and anger. Those people were hunted down, many of them dying.
'You see, the Royal Family had a special link to the Goddess. Selected members could see visions from any time period and, in some rare cases, even see the Goddess herself. Once humans found out, they attacked the host of the link, killing her.'
'In hopes to keep that link in the family, everyone split up. The next heir was never mentioned to anyone else; I don't even know who currently has this link.'
'After generations of the royal family living in secret, the attacks stopped. The royal family agreed to meet up again, this time in America.'
'Before this could happen, your mother got pregnant with you.'
There was a new image, one of a heavily pregnant woman with a man hugging her from behind. Their faces were blank, but the woman had familiar green eyes.
'Around this time, the Goddess discovered a new growing evil. To deal with, she needed a strong soul. One that would go through trials and come out stronger than before. The plan was to add a wolf spirit to another child, one that was destined for greatness. Merging the two wolves, the human would have the power to take down the evil.'
'Just as the plan was about to be set, the child suddenly died. Acting fast, the Goddess took the child's wolf and placed it in another child that was to be born. That child was you. This gave you two wolves, but because the other child spent two years with her wolf, it wouldn't merge with another wolf. That gives you two wolves, one by birth and one given by the Goddess.'
Light started to flutter in, and Regina could see something in front of her. With more light, she made out a wolf, taller than Speranza with shining silver fur. The wolf stood firm; head held high with power. Her eyes were gold, just like Sergio. It was her wolf; she could feel the connection.
'I stayed hidden; having two wolves can be too much for a human to take. Humans weren't intended to ever have an animal spirit, let alone two.'
'But the time draws near. Evil is growing, and since that child died years ago, the fight falls to your shoulders.'
But what about her family? Where they still out there?
The wolf sat down, head resting on its paws.
'They wanted to join family, and so they started to move to America. To not draw attention, they did it slowly. Children, couples, or small families over time. By now, they should have reached America, settling down somewhere. You were sent to meet with your aunt, but she was delayed. The other wolves at the shipyard took you in, and since I was asleep, I couldn't contact your family.'
Does that mean she could find them? Could her wolf contact them now?
'Almost. I'm awake, which means others can contact you. But I'm not connected to the family; I've been asleep for too long. I will need to meet with another royal wolf to connect once again. After that, I should be able to reach our family.'
It finally made sense. The voice in her head, Sergio following her and the other people she could hear. Her family was out there; she could find them. Then everything could settle down.
Except for the whole fighting evil thing.
'It's not yet; you have time. But I suggest you train. I need time to build up strength, I've been asleep for ten years.'
What about that thing that had happened in the living room? Atta had said that she had spoken through all of their minds.
The wolf let out a bark that sounded somewhat like a laugh.
'Oh, that was me. You said you wanted them to be quiet, so I told them to be silent. It's a power of a Royal wolf. If you have a connection with a wolf, you can contact them without any link. Just use the string that connects you to them.'
That was cool. That would mean she could talk to Sergio without needed a pack link. This could be helpful.
'I will let Speranza be your main wolf; if I come to too much power, others will notice. Right now, just train and be ready for anything. The evil knows where you are, and they will come for you.'
That made her feel all good and fluffy inside.
'Take care, Astrid. And wait. Everything will work out in time.'
The light started to disappear, and Regina began to feel tired. If this was going to happen every time she slept or passed out, she would never get a good night's sleep.
****
She woke up in a different room. It was white everywhere, with beds lined up. Regina let out a groan, recognizing the hospital wing. How long had she been out this time?
"So you aren't happy to see me? I'm wounded, Regina."
She turned to her left to see a young man in a doctor's coat. He was most likely the Theta for the pack.
He was handsome, a young man with tan skin and short black hair. He had scruff on his face and sharp blue eyes. His smile was shining; he was most likely popular with the other lady wolves in the pack.
"I'm Theta Polo; I know you haven't been officially introduced, so you wouldn't know me. Most people know you though, Mavis and Atta suddenly bring home and girl who survives two rogue attacks."
"Don't overwhelm her; she just woke up."
Regina looked to the door and saw Theta Polo. She looked back to the doctor before switching back to the other man. They looked exactly the same, one with a doctor coat and one without. Regina fell to the bed; she was dealing with more identical siblings.
"That would be my brother, Marco. Don't worry, I'm the smart one, so it's easy to tell us apart."
He flashed a smile, and the other brother hit Polo's shoulder.
"As if. You may be the doctor, but I'm in charge of all the tactical stuff. That would make me smarter than you, baby brother."
The two continued arguing back and forth, giving Regina enough of a distraction to leave unnoticed. She got out of the bed, nearly falling in the process. How long had she been asleep? After finding her balance, Regina stood straight and crept to the door. She thought it was working until Polo called out as soon as she touched the door handle.
"Mavis won't be happy; you've been asleep for two days. If you do leave, go see her."
Regina gave an awkward smile and left before they could take her back.
She would see Mavis after she spoke to a certain wolf first.
'Did you know anything about Viribus?'
Regina was walking through the packhouse, ignoring the rest of the world. She didn't have anything to do until meeting Mavis anyway.
'Nothing. I didn't know anything until I looked through your memories. I still can't feel her, even though we are in the same body.'
'She said that since you spent two years with another human, it made it so she couldn't merge with you. Could that be why you two are so separated?'
'That would make sense. It does make me worried. If she has so much power, what's to stop her from overpowering you and me. She could be lying and take control to do something terrible.'
'I don't think so, Speranza. I felt the connection I have with her; it didn't feel like she was lying. I trust her, and I think we should go along. If it means I get to find my birth family, it will all be worth it.'
Her family. Somehow, she got adopted into the nomadic pack, forgetting all about her birth parents. Thinking about that, she had three families now. She hadn't even met all of her cousins; how big was her family going to end up being in the end? Family reunions were going to suck.
'Now that I think about it, Viribus said something strange. She called me Astrid.'
'Maybe that was the name your birth parents gave you. That could be the link to finding them.'
Reaching the apartment, Regina grew excited. It wasn't quite dinner time, so Atta wouldn't be busy. It was the perfect time to ask if he knew anything about an Astrid on that boat.
Opening the door, Regina saw Atta at his semi-permanent office in the living room. He was still looking for what happened to her nomadic pack and where they came from. She could help him with that.
"Hey Luce, should you be running around?"
She sent him a smile before sitting and looking through the papers. Thanks to those long and horrible lessons, she could read, write, and understand the words. She flipped through the documents, Atta watching with a raised brow.
A passenger list from 2010, all single, young, female passengers circled. Looking over each one, she stopped and pointed at a name, showing it to Atta.
"Astrid Bosman, from Rotterdam Netherlands. She came on the Historia Agata, arriving in America June of 2010. Brown hair, green eyes, age eight 4'6. It has listed that she came to live with her aunt, a Josephine Smith. Is this you, Luce?"
Josephine Smith. If they found a relative, Viribus could connect and link to the rest of her family. This was the link she was looking for.
Regina nodded, and Atta shuffled some more papers. He pulled out another list that looked like the passenger one.
"This is for the werewolves; it lists the same stuff but their rank and what pack they came from. We found Marielle's and Otto's, but they came from a different pack than Astrid did. She came from Natuur Liefe. It doesn't have her rank listed though, strange."
Well, it's not like they could list' Royal Wolf' like it was an everyday thing. If they did, she would have been found before she even entered the ship.
"How do you know this is you, Luce? There are plenty of girls on this ship that match your description."
'I just know. Can we find this Josephine person? She can confirm that my name was Astrid Bosman.'
"It does list a pack, but this is from ten years ago. I'll contact her pack, but I don't know if she still lives in Maine. It will take some time."
Regina didn't care. She leaned up, pressed a kiss to his forehead, and ran off.
The day could only get better. Waking up in the afternoon, and then finding out more of her family, it was all too perfect.
Things could only get better from here.
