All of a sudden, I hear my brother's voice like he's right beside me. But, how? Surely, I'm hundreds of miles away from my homeland, because of all the colors I had seen. There's no sign of snow around for miles anymore. Was my escape a dream?
The voice that sounds like my brother starts pleading for help. It sounds so sad that it makes me snap open my eyes. As soon as my eyes focus, I see a ceiling and know for sure this place isn't home. Home doesn't have a ceiling. Is the sad pleading voice a dream?
I can tell I'm very far from my cold home by the warm air that's surrounding me, but the voice was so close that, it gives me chills. Did something happen to Brother, or is it really Brother's voice I heard? Maybe it's just my imagination, because of how much stress and guilt I'm feeling right now for leaving him behind to clean up my mess of relieving Dad of his Leader position.
I know Brother has always wanted to be a Leader, and once he is in the position, he will be happy that he has finally achieved his dream. I'm just a little worried about how Dad is going to take it, but I know brother will be able to work it all out.
Looking around, I realize that I'm not alone. I jump up and literally fall off the bed that I was laying on.
There's a man across the room from me. I didn't hear any movement. Has he been here the whole time? Was he staring at me while I slept?
I gasp when I look at his face. It has so much scarring and his eye sockets have no eyeballs.
"I'm scary, ain't I?" He laughs with a big grin, then he shut his eyelids so I didn't have to look at his empty eye sockets. This helps me relax a little, but my instincts are telling me he's not human. There's no way a human could survive an attack like that. There's too much scarring. I sniff, there's a smell of a wolf in the air, and the smell's coming from him.
Oh great, he is a werewolf. I tense up ready for an attack.
"Relax, boy. I'm not going to do anything to ya." He says putting his hands up in the air showing that he doesn't have any weapons. I drop my guard a little thinking maybe he isn't looking for a fight.
I'm kinda amazed that he's able to tell how I was feeling without even seeing me. With his eyes being gone, his other senses must have gotten sharper.
"I pulled ya out of the river with my fishing line. At first, I thought ya were a big fish, but when I felt the shape I realized that it was the wrong shape for a fish." He laughs with the biggest smile on his face that made me smile too."So, boy, are ya ok? I brought ya to my place because ya wouldn't wake up."
"I'm fine, thank you for saving me from the river." My voice shakes as I answer, because this is the first werewolf outside my pack that I've ever talked to. Feral werewolves that I ran into at home never talk, they just attack. Having a conversation with a werewolf that I don't know from birth is odd.
"I'm Sam, boy. What's ya name and how old are ya?" He asks, smiling at me.
"Kia is my name and I'm 18 years old." I quickly say, getting tired of him calling me boy. His eyebrows shoot up like he's surprised at what he heard, which confuses me.
"Oh, so, ya an adult! I thought ya were a wee little snapper running away from home." He explains in laughter.
I'm baffled. I'm 6'8" and buff. How in the world did he get the idea that I was a kid with this body? When he rescued me in the river, didn't he get a good feel of how manly I am? But, his laughter and how casual he is makes me relax completely. We start chit chatting about small things until he asks the question I've been dreading.
"Boy, where ya from?"
He's still calling me a boy. Ugh, he's just slashing my pride to pieces.
Should I tell him the truth?
It seems like he doesn't sense that I'm also a werewolf, which I barely can sense my male wolf. I must have used too much of his strength doing the teleport howl. He seems to be in a very deep sleep right beside where the female wolf is asleep.
I debate a little on what to tell Sam. I have a gut feeling that I could trust this man. But, I want to leave my werewolf days behind me and live a peaceful normal human life. I decide to tell him as close to the truth as possible.
"Well, I'm traveling to see different places. So, I will be on my way now. Thank you again for saving me. " I hurriedly explain. I need to get away from him before he realizes I'm also a werewolf, and to adjust myself to my new environment.
He only seems to find my answer amusing.
"Ya a tough boy, ain't ya? Leaving home to travel, but it's night and these woods are kind of dangerous at night. Please stay the night, so I'm not up all night worrying about ya."
Woods are dangerous? The thought of that makes me laugh. Woods are home to our wolves. There isn't anything more dangerous in the woods than us, so he must not be the only werewolf around.
Great, more trouble. But, with how he's acting, I'm absolutely sure that Sam has no idea that I'm also a werewolf.
I don't know if that will stand true when my wolf is awake. It is harder to sense if someone is a werewolf if their wolf is asleep. Usually your wolf is awake when you're awake and it goes to sleep when you do.
But, if you use too much energy or your wolf is badly wounded, it will go to sleep to recover. When the wolf is asleep, we can't transform into it, which is leaving me defenseless right now.
I'm thinking my wolf should be knocked out for awhile, so it should be safe. Sam won't know that I'm a werewolf. I'll take this chance to take Sam's offer of giving me a safe place to stay, so I don't run into anymore werewolves. They might not be as nice as Sam is. With my wolf out of commission, I'm mostly like a human. I don't want to run into some aggressive werewolves in the state I'm in now. It would be smart to lay low in this safe place until my wolf is up.
"Alright, I'll stay the night." I said to Sam looking forward to my first sleepover.
