3:00 in the morning came quickly.
Dan: “Alright guys, look alive. It’s demon time.”
Ricky: “Right. Let me gone hop on Tik Tok and see what’s poppin’.”
Brandon: “Aww you beat me to it.”
Dan: “Yeah I was wondering which one of y’all were going to say it.”
But aside from the phrase becoming a social media trend, they all knew what Dan meant. Over the past three years they had learned that demonic activity seemed to spike during this hour of the night. There were a lot of theories as to why, which Matthew enlightened them on regularly. Brandon slightly hoped that that would be the case tonight. He was ready to go home and go to sleep. A few minutes passed and it was Eli who chimed in first.
Eli: “I got a presence near my barrier.”
Eli had created a light barrier around the whole hospital and surrounding parking lot with the center being the chapel. It was easier and not as strenuous due to the light of the chapel itself. He felt the presence of an entity pressing on the south side of his barrier. Then another. And another. No way…
Eli, distressed: “Guys I got like 10 entities pressing on my barrier to the south. They don’t seem to be particularly powerful, though. My barrier should hold no problem.”
Ricky: “TEN?! That’s more than expected. But there was a hoard that showed up in the dream. Maybe they are with the demon. Keep the barrier strong. I’ll go ahead and send…”
Dan: “Yo I got activity over here.”
Dan had set up a parameter of ionized poles all around the campus. He set the polarity to repel anything with a negative spiritual charge. The sheer number of poles he had to create and maintain would have been impossible if anyone other than him attempted it. It was only thanks to his immense spiritual reserve that he was able to even think the idea would work. He felt the instant one of the poles started to react. He wasn’t really worried though. He knew his security system would hold. But more poles started to react. Not only that but that much lightning had charged the air and created quite a bit of ozone. He used it to read the skies above and found that he didn’t just have company on the ground. But whatever entity was in the sky circled around and flew off abruptly after completing one loop around the campus.
Dan: “I’m surrounded. They’re everywhere! There was one in the sky, but it left. I can hold them off, but this isn’t just a hoard. I think I have half a legion out here.”
A legion? That’s not good, thought Ricky. Sure, Dan was powerful, but could even he stand up to an army? Especially one attacking the whole campus of the hospital he was covering.
Ricky: “Alright. I’ll send Kat to help you out.”
Kat: “No can-do Babe. I got my own problems over here.”
Sure enough, demons had started coming through the rain Kat had created to cover the hospital. They marched in like infantry, a group of about 10. She took the water on the ground, rose it to their calves, and froze it. They started to struggle until they started slashing the ice on each other’s legs. They wouldn’t stay frozen for long. She was going to have to do some work. Just as she was about to head down, she sensed a presence in her clouds. It circled around and then flew away.
Ricky: “How many do you have on you, Kat?”
Kat: “About 10. But there was something in the sky. It made a circle around the hospital and flew away.”
Dan, through slightly strained breath: “That’s the same thing mine did.”
Brandon: “It’s a scout. Military does that all the time. The send out somebody to do recon. Or maybe they’re looking for something.”
Cade: “Or someone. In the dream they were focused on one guy.”
Matthew: “Yeah but it looks like we’re all getting attacked.”
Ricky: “You too man?”
Matthew: “Yeah, I have some guys here. Same number as the others have reported.”
Brandon: “Same here.”
Ricky: “Oh crap now I’m seeing some.”
Cade: “Hey Ricky. Do you want me to go help anyone? I don’t have any activity over here.”
Eli: “Hey, the scout just made a loop around my barrier. It’s gone now though.”
Ricky: “Cade, you’re the closest to Eli. Wait and see if the scout comes to you next. If it does, wait about 10 minutes and if you are still clear head to me. Eli is in the best situation for his powers but I’m in the middle of a city. I can’t just make a tornado here to clear these guys out. Imma need some help on the ground.”
Cade: “Ok. Will do.”
Cade waited and listened. Lightning crashed. Rain raged. Fires roared. The others were fighting. They kept their phones on them and the chat open. Then Cade actually saw something in the sky. Much too big to be a regular bird. He blinked his eyes, making them the eyes of a cat to see in the darkness. It was strange. It definitely had huge wings like a bird, but its body was humanoid, but animalistic at the same time. Its legs kind of hung in the air as it flew around. Its head swiveled on its long neck as if searching for something. Then it was gone. Not as if it flew away like the others had mentioned but it vanished altogether.
Cade: “The scout just left.”
Ricky, yelling over howling winds: “Ok. Wait a little bit and come up this way.”
Cade: “Got it.”
Something didn’t sit right with Cade. Everyone else was fighting bands of demons and he was sitting quietly. He wanted to go help his friends. He was used to not being directly in the action given that the rest of them were the real fighters. He and Eli usually hung back and provided support from afar. He kept them linked together through his power and Eli was able to set up really efficient barriers so they weren’t interrupted and no one really saw them. He played an important role even if it could be seen as minor. But his powers helped them stay united. And where there is unity, there is power. At least that’s what Dan and Ricky told him. So he waited for his chance to go help his friend.
