After a few minutes they were all gathered together talking where they had been sitting during service. Throughout the conversation Matthew kept activating whatever new ability he had acquired. He noticed when he gathered some spirit energy and focused that Dan got blurry, like the haze around a fire. He also noticed that when he concentrated the energy at his fingertips small flames would appear. But not wanting to start a fire in the building, he dismissed those quickly. And he noticed that when he moved his glasses away from his eyes Dan came into focus. Which was weird considering he was farsighted. “So we going to get some food or something? I’m starving,” petitioned Dan. “I’m down if everyone else is,” agreed Ricky. “Naw mane Imma head out,” commented Brandon. “I got some stuff I wanted to do since it’s my night off.” “Yeah, Imma head out too,” chimed Matthew. “Oh ok then. Y’all have a good night,” replied Ricky.
“Uh Dan,” Matthew started before he turned to leave. “What’s going on with your eyes? Did you go put color changing contacts in or something?” Dan looked shocked for a second but quickly recovered. “Naw, no contacts,” he replied. “But it’s probably the same thing that’s going on with the heat haze around you,” he retorted slyly. “Uh, what’s a heat haze?” Kat asked. Dan chimed, “you know how if you look at fire its got this like wavy air around it? That air is called heat haze. It’s caused by light binding in the air around the fire cuz light works differently in hot air than it does in cold air.” “Now wait a minute mane,” Brandon spoke up. “I know you supposed to be like a genius or whatever but there’s no way you just knew that off the top of your head. Now come on mane.” “I’ll have you know that I know a lot of completely useless trivia and facts. But yeah, I did have to look all that up. I saw it around him earlier when I came back from the bathroom.” “What are either of you talking about?” asked Ricky. “Dan’s eyes are their usually black – sorry, dark brown,” he stated giving Dan a quick side eye, “and there isn’t any haze or anything around Matt. Are you guys ok?” “You mean you can’t see those GLOWING yellow eyes?” Matt asked in disbelief.
“Well let me ask you this?” Dan chimed in. “Are they always yellow to you?” “No. Only when I…uh…,” Matthew hesitated a little. He didn’t want to seem freaky or weird in front of his friends. Well, any more so than he already was. But he hadn’t really told anybody about his ability to use spiritual energy. Most people would just think he was imagining things. He tried to talk to his family and pastor about it once before but he got the feeling they didn’t really take him seriously. “Only when you tap into the Spirit right?” Dan finished for him. Matt startled. He knew? How could he know? “How did you know?” “I’d recognize the look of someone scared to tell others about something strange or different about himself a mile away. It’s a look I’ve seen in the mirror too many times. Plus, Eli’s dad could see my eyes but none of the rest of you can and I’m guessing the vast majority of this congregation can’t either. They only turned this color after I myself put effort into channeling some spiritual energy. But unlike my eyes, your heat haze isn’t permanent. It’s kept going in and out ever since I first noticed it coming back to the pew. So I figured you were doing what I was doing when I created lightning in my hand. That would also explain why it felt like I had held my wrist in fire when you grabbed it earlier.”
Matthew was almost crying. I’m not alone. I’m not weird or crazy. He can do it too. The things I have been able to do with spirit energy is real. I’m not crazy. I’M NOT CRAZY.
“So let me get this straight,” proclaimed Kat. “Not only can you guys somehow feel and control and manipulate some kind of spiritual power or energy or whatever. But now you’re saying you can actually manifest it?” She sounded very skeptical. Who could blame her? “Well it would explain why it felt so hot sitting beside him when we went back to our seats,” Cade remarked quietly. “But wait,” Matthew thought of something, “you said your eyes are permanent. But when I stop focusing on the energy they go back to normal.” “You see them as normal when you stop focusing. But they have stayed yellow ever since the first time I exerted some energy in the bathroom. My theory is that I always have some level of spirit power activated so even me not consciously exerting myself still grants me this manifestation. I’m constantly open to the spiritual realm so I guess my eyes just stay this way.” “Dan. I knew you were a preacher and I knew you were pretty deep into ministry but I didn’t know you were THAT deep or that powerful,” Ricky remarked slightly awestruck. “Yeah, I don’t talk about that side of my spirituality cuz most people wouldn’t understand or believe me.” “Same,” agreed Matt. “Well, I think both of you are crazy and until I see whatever it is y’all talkin’ about, Imma just keep it pushin’,” Brandon commented. “And that bein’ said, I’m out. I’ll catch y’all later.” Brandon turned and started walking towards the doors of the sanctuary. “What if you could feel it?” called Dan.
