High Lord Nikolus remained there, watching Celestina and the mortal boy disappear after turning down, and entering the vacant highway leading to the human base city.
A loud sigh fell from his lips and he looked up to the cloudless bright blue sky. The early spring breeze caressed his face as he closed his eyes, allowing it to brush away his worries for a short while.
He had brought this on himself.
The past four days had been exhausting for him. He was used to the workload and monitoring multiple groups of people simultaneously, but what drained him the most was the emotional turmoil. He had to remind himself persistently he was making the appropriate choice, that Celestiana's happiness mattered more than his unjustified desire to have her near himself.
She could never be happy in the Royal Palace. He had witnessed it, how every day he quenched the radiant light burning in her. She was too precious to be left there with him. After seeing all of that, yet, an infinitesimal part, deep inside of him, wished she wouldn't leave. It was selfish of him to let that whim cross his mind, and he fought hard against it to keep it at bay. There was also a longing he had buried in the depths of his soul, in which he desired more than just being with Celest in a platonic way. But he was too ashamed to even admit to its existence and blamed his vampire instincts messing with his head.
Entertaining the thought of separating them was high treason, death penalty. And yet, he had planned and helped her to flee and build a life for herself with the bloke she claimed to love.
I'm doing the right thing. He repeated it to himself until the vibration in his pocket disrupted the chanting.
He fished out his phone and received the call.
"Nik, come back, the situation is getting out of control." The man on the other line rambled.
Lord Nikolus furrowed his brows, "What's wrong?"
"It's becoming impossible to mislead them now. Melckom has taken the matters under his own command," he answered.
The High Lord hung up and cursed under his breath. He pulled himself to his full height and placed himself in between the two cars. Stretched each hand towards each car and painted his house's garage vividly in his head. He outstretched his fingers and in unison fisted both hands. The cars vanished and parked in the spots he had visualized.
At last, he muttered, "Locusallagis,"
