It seemed as if they just evaporated from the birds when touched by the light.
They weren't dead, I knew that; they were back in Hell, and they were very weak.
I stopped emitting the light and fell down to the ground, feeling burnt out.
Weak as I was, I could feel that something else was wrong, but I couldn't feel what it was.
That was when I saw something that is burned in my mind forever - Avice, my best friend and the person who was always there for me had turned into something else, something horrible and evil.I saw her rip the throat out of the villager nearest to her and laugh excitedly, standing there covered in his fresh blood.
It was so sudden that we never saw it coming. We didn't have a chance to react before she ripped out another person's throat with her bare teeth.
Her perfect white teeth were now stained with the blood of innocent villagers, and her clothes were dripping wet with the blood of the poor people who found themselves in her way.
How could I miss something that big? It must have happened during the battle while my powers were otherwise occupied; the raven from ten years ago must have done something to her to hurt me even more.
Suddenly, she turned into a huge black raven and started flying away. Although I was horrified by what she had done I still thought that maybe there was a chance that I could still get my friend back, so I jumped on my horse's back and galloped after her.
It was a long chase, but I could follow her easily, mostly because she didn't seem to want to run away. She was letting me catch up.
Naively, I thought it was because she could be saved.
I was so wrong.
It was twilight when we finally came to a huge cliff.
Under different circumstances, I would have thought the place magical.
It was a huge cliff overlooking the perfectly blue ocean. The view was something that would have left everyone breathless, but not me, not then.
I stopped my horse while the raven, that was once my friend, hovered near the cliff's edge.
Suddenly I heard a sound behind me, and when I turned around I saw that it was the man I saw earlier, the shape the raven had taken to mock me.
Now it had the same sneering expression on its face.
"The power of love! Ugh, I hate that one!" he said. "But I still win. You have beaten my demons, but I have hurt you more than I ever planned.
I took your friend away from you, and funny enough, I used 'love' to do it. I convinced her that I loved her, and she trusted me.
Once you give your love and trust to someone they can turn it against you, you know?
I am losing my power now and will soon end up back in Hell because your beam did hit me, but I have enough strength to show you that you have lost.
You will live with the knowledge that you killed your friend in the worst possible way; you killed her soul by your mere presence.
You are also responsible for the deaths of all the villagers she killed, and all the people she will kill in the future.
I chose her only to hurt you, and it worked so well, it warms my evil heart." He started laughing and the echo of his laughter could still be heard even after he disappeared.
The last thing I heard were these terrible words: "She shall stay forever raven, my raven!"
