"You sure are young for wanting to find an apartment of your own." The landlord at a small apartment complex told me. "Were you planning on running away from your parents?" He asked with a joking tone. "Kidding, now if you are looking for something cheap I'm not sure if I'm much help. The low rents have already been taken and the cheapest one available would be around 900 dollars a month."
"Thank you for your help, I will keep this in mind." The older man smiled at me and wished me luck while I left the building.
"Mykie!" I froze when Prince Victor jumped out of the corner of the building.
"What are you—?"
"Just looking around and I coincidentally found you." Prince Victor wore his navy blue set which was decorated with patches and medals.
"Oh," I softly said.
"Still looking around?" I nodded. "Your parents aren't going to help?" I bit my lip trying to play it off like they were still with me. The boy had no way of knowing, so it's not like I could get mad at him. Plus, he's the prince meaning I could not snap at him.
"They are settling in right now. It's my job to look around for a place to stay." I lied.
"Those'er all of your options?" Prince Victor looked over my shoulder and at the small piece of paper I held in my hands.
"Yeah," I mumbled.
"Not too expensive." I don't think the young prince understood my perception of expensive. He was tainted because of his Royal class, I was a mere commoner and could hardly afford much.
"Yeah, not really. But we still have to pay for our hotel along with food, so it's kind of hard to tell." Prince Victor nodded his head.
"You're an interesting guy." He smiled at me while we walked along the street. "You decline my request for friendship, you decline my offer of a discount, you also talk to me like I'm a commoner as well."
"Oh, I'm—"
"Don't apologize, it's actually nice. You see, being a prince and everything comes with its perks and its downside. I can't talk to anyone without them treating me like absolute royalty. You, on the other hand, talk to me like I'm a regular kid. I like that." Prince Victor smiled to himself.
"Why... are you bothering me?" It came out ruder than I hoped for so I opened my mouth to apologize, but the prince simply laughed.
"Why? Because I find you interesting. You're like a box with holes in it. I try to peek inside but can hardly see anything. I have a million questions when it comes to you." Prince Victor stopped and grabbed my arm while he did so. "Say my name."
"Prince—"
"No." He turned me around so we were staring at each other. "My name. Not my title. Say my name."
"Victor," I said slowly hoping it was not a trick question. It wasn't though. The boy's smile grew while he nodded his head like a child.
"Call me that."
"I can't do that. It's disrespectful to not call you by your title. Plus it makes it seem like you're my equal and we are nowhere near on the same level." The prince searched my hazel eyes trying to find something.
"When we are alone then."
"Huh?"
"When it's just me and you. Call me Victor when it's just the two of us." I couldn't understand why the kid looked so serious. His blue eyes were narrowed and his eyebrows were slightly furrowed. "I want to be treated like I'm your friend. I want my title and my hair color to be irrelevant. Does that sound good?"
"Sure," I said softly. I couldn't think of a reason why we would ever be alone. A prince shouldn't be left with a stranger and I couldn't imagine a situation where we would be alone. Guards must be all around us, watching our every move.
"Great, now, Mykie." Prince Victor let go of me and began to walk by my side. "I still want you to be my friend. It's lonely being a prince. I don't see other Blues that often, people don't treat you the same, and I don't have siblings to entertain me. My dad is busy with his Royal Duties and the workers are so stiff around me. So I need a friend, you're going to be my friend."
"Okay," I said softly making Prince Victor dart his eyes at me with a big smile.
"You'll be my friend?" The boy asked me.
"Sure, we can be friends." I was already regretting the fact that I agreed. Prince Victor would soon find out about my identity and I would betray him. I didn't want to do that.
"Really?" I slowly nodded. "Great!" Prince Victor grabbed me by the wrist and began to pull me around the town.
"Where are we going?" I asked the prince.
"We are exploring! I want to take my new friend around!" Prince Victor seemed elated to have a friend. Surely he could find one other than a Green pretending to be a Red. It would be better to meet a Purple which is close in class.
"Okay." I sighed with a smile. Prince Victor stopped at a little bakery then walked up to the stand.
"I'll get you something." He whispered then let go of my hand.
"You don't have—"
"Now, now, now Mykie." Prince Victor shook his head. "Let me do this one thing for you." He smiled at me then pushed me forward so I could look at the desserts.
"I guess I'll get the bread," I said while pointing to the least expensive pastry.
"We'll have two of those." Prince Victor smiled at the lady who was working upfront. She seemed absolutely amazed that the prince was coming to her stand.
"Of course, Prince Victor." The orange-haired lady stuttered. "It will be out shortly." The prince paid for the desserts then pulled me aside while we waited for our bread.
"Do you see what's happening around us?" He asked making me look at every one. "They are all amazed that the prince is ordering from this bakery. When we leave everyone else will want to try a piece of this. That's just how it happens."
"That's because people admire you so they want to copy what you do. If the prince likes it then the townspeople would want to try it too. It's the rule of thumb." I looked up at Prince Victor who nodded his head.
"You're right." Prince Victor shook his head like he was shaking away something bad. "Enough about that, how are you enjoying Indixous?" The blue-haired royal rocked on the balls of his heels while he smiled brightly.
"It's good. The townspeople are very nice." I thought back to the hotel receptionist who always checked up on me and greeted me every time I saw her.
"The residents of our kingdom are very united and are nice. It's part of the foundation our kingdom stands on." The royal said as if he was very proud of it.
"My old kingdom wasn't that nice. We lived in a very strict society where you couldn't interact freely with people not of your color. I found it very hard to make friends." I scratched my neck with a sheepish smile.
"And now you're my friend!" Prince Victor grabbed our desserts then thanked the lady. "Here you go, Mykie." I took it with a slight bow then followed the prince to a little bench. "Sadly, I must head off soon. I'm only allowed to be out for thirty minutes unless I have a guard with me. But if I have a guard I wouldn't be able to talk to you so freely. It's a pain." The prince groaned while kicking his legs.
"That's okay, I still have to finish looking for apartments. We can just enjoy the time we have." The prince looked at me with utter shock then smiled.
"I like you, Mykie. You're a really interesting guy." With that, we finished our bread then went our own ways. "I'll see you again!" The prince called to me before running away.
Oh, boy. He shouldn't get too attached.
I sighed then continued to look for some apartments.
