The Color Red

8~Victor~

8~Victor~

Dec 05, 2020

You think it wouldn't feel weird when someone your age thanked you for anything, but it did. Maybe because I thought Mykie was so helpless that when he said it, it made me feel like I did something right.

The Red had nothing significant of him other than his appearance. I figured his skinniness came from the lack of food. I could only imagine how little food he had eaten over the last few days. His hair was really prominent but that was to be assumed because of the color. He had childlike features, big eyes, small frame, and height.

"Isn't it nice outside?" I looked at Mykie who viewed the kingdom with his hazel eyes.

"Yeah, I guess it is." We walked around the kingdom until I groaned and sighed. "I forgot I was supposed to be back at 11:30." My phone read 11:40, being ten minutes late. "I should probably go before my dad sends out a search army looking for me." I waved goodbye to Mykie and ran quite quickly to the car that was supposed to pick me up.

"Victor," I heard my dad even before walking into my estate. "Where have you been! You are more than twenty minutes late!" Charles stood beside him trying to contain my father.

"I lost track of time," I said honestly which made my dad upset. "It was an honest mistake and I promise it won't happen again."

"That boy is a bad influence, I knew it."

"What? No! Mykie hasn't done anything wrong. I'm telling you, it's my fault. I didn't pay attention to the time!" I furrowed my eyebrows while I slightly raised my voice. Mykie had been wrongfully accused many times in his life and I wasn't going to let this be another one.

"He's telling the truth, Eugene," Charles said while calming my father.

Charles and my dad had been friends since they were children. My dad found Charles one day after being brutally beaten, and ever since then, they had been good friends. That is why Charles is the only one to call my father by his name.

"The boy is going to be 18, so what if he stays out late? He's enjoying his time outside of the castle and made a friend. Shouldn't you be happy?" My dad sighed and shook his head.

"Charles, Victor doesn't have an ounce of self-defense in his blood. I mean, sure, he took a self-defense class, but that doesn't mean he will fight back.."

"Oh, you don't have to worry about that. Mykie is like a baby deer. Seriously, he could be blown away by the wind. I'm telling you, Mykie isn't a bad person." There was pleading in my voice because I desperately wanted to clear his name.

"I really don't know about this. You don't even know him! You haven't done any proper background checks. How do you know that he is who he says he is? What if he is lying?" I slightly flinched, then sighed.

"Oh, Dad, please. I'm begging you—"

"Eugene, let him be. Even if you say no, it's not like he will listen. He's going to be an adult; you won't be able to contain him forever." My dad simply sighed and rubbed his temples trying to think of the right answer.

"Charles, if anything happens to my son, I'm blaming you." Charles bowed before my father and told me to run along.

I knew if they found out he was a Red, there would be no way that I would be able to see Mykie. But no one would find out. I figured as long as I was with him, no one would discover who he was.

"You got in trouble because of me, didn't you?" It was the first thing that Mykie had asked me when I saw him the following day.

"It was my fault. You've done nothing wrong." I assured him as I sat down on the wretched red loveseat. It was such an ugly shade, but Mykie didn't seem to mind.

"Oh, Victor. You really shouldn't be around someone like me. I will cause complete havoc." Mykie said with his mouse-like voice. "You are going to do a lot more damage than you think." He told me.

"Mykie, you don't seem to understand. I'm the prince—"

"But that's why! You being the prince is why it will go out of control. If you were any other color it would be different! It's wrong."

"It's not wrong," I said quite baffled because Mykie hardly raised his voice. "Mykie, there is nothing wrong with this. It's just two boys becoming friends. Our colors play no role in this friendship." I hardened my voice to the kid who began to retract from me making my heart break a little.

"I just don't want you to get in trouble," he told me in a soft tone.

"It's not me you should worry about. It's you we should worry about. As far as I know, there has never been a Red in this kingdom. I have no clue what would happen if these people were to find out. So don't worry about me." I stood up from the seat and placed a soft hand on Mykie's shoulder. "Don't worry."

We set out on the town once again, Mykie loosening up after the conversation we had. He smiled as we walked along the streets of Indixous. It was cute the way he acted. I could watch him for hours if I had the chance to.

I wanted that to last forever. I wanted him to be safe, secure, and happy for as long as he lived, but even I knew it was too much to ask for. One small mess up could leave his world crashing upon him, and I was not ready for when it would happen.

"Why do you look so upset?" He asked quite innocently. "Smile, Victor." His words were too naive to not react to. So I smiled at him.

I'm glad Victor realizes the gravity of the situation. Maybe he can ask about what happens to reds if they are found in the kingdom?
