Lucas opened his eyes to see the rays of sunshine coming inside. It was already time to get to his Saturday duties. He didn’t have any duties last year. But now after gavin had challenged his father, he had called on him to be the beta after his seventeenth birthday. Work was never ending around the pack. The economy was booming and there was no time to waste.

Lucas dressed up and made his way to the lobby of his multi story home. He was from a beta family so they were quite wealthy. He walked to the kitchen and decided to have some cereal. As he was having his breakfast he heard his sister from behind him “Lucas. Good morning.”

Lucas turned and frowned “Good morning trouble. Why aren’t you in school. I heard you have to attend extra classes today because you defied the head mistress. I missed school on Friday for work reasons and I heard you caused trouble. You are only sixteen. You have to finish school Lorraine.”

Lorraine sat at the breakfast table “The head mistress cancelled it. She phoned home and said your girlfriend has had a word with her. She said she has lost her job because of me.”

Lucas almost chocked on his cereal “What?”

Loraine said “Apparently the alpha was going to replace her with his aunt anyway. You know Lady Androma. She is taking over now. She was away on some mission up north and she is back now. So now that they gave me an unjust sanction the head mistress is replaced.”

Lucas narrowed his eyes “I am going to give you a sanction now. You are grounded until I say so ... If you say one word to object, I will make it Christmas.”

Lorraine swallowed her words. Her brother was quite strict but not brutal. She looked down “I am sorry Lucas.”

Lucas said “Being sorry won’t get you out of trouble. You will behave yourself or I am sending you to summer boot camp, the one I personally oversee. You are a beta. You are a teenager. You get mood swings. You must control your anger. You need to learn some discipline. Either learn it to school or I will teach it to you, the military way at the boot camp.”

Lorraine objected “I know how to control my temper. I do it. Look. She insulted our mum. She said humans are not worth anything. How could I be quiet.”

Lucas asked “Did the head mistress say that about mum? Really? She wouldn’t dare.”

Lorraine said “No. She said it to a human who is my friend. I took offence. Our mum is human.”

Lucas sighed “So she didn’t insult you but you insulted her. Look Lorraine, don’t try to be a hero. Mum is lucky she is living with dad at the retirement district. The headmistress just said what everyone says on daily basis. It’s in the school books too at times too. Why did you have to insult the head mistress and even go all beta on her making her submit to you?”

Lorraine looked down and didn’t say anything.

Lucas said “Speak and defend your actions or I will not only ground you but will send you to summer boot camp that I manage for unruly teens too. Your choice.”

Lorraine murmured “He is my friend. He was crying after that.”

Lucas asked “He? It’s a boy?”

Lorraine looked up “Yes. He is coming to the prom with me. The head mistress said things to him in front of me. He said I should know my heritage and respect myself.”

Lucas said “Do you like him?”

Lorraine said “I don’t know. But I liked to go to prom with him.”

Lucas sighed “I don’t know what to say. We both know the school policy. They won’t let you take him inside. It’s hard to get permission from the school council unless I make it a beta order.”

Lorraine asked “Will you make it a beta order?”

Lucas said “You say you don’t know if you like him. I have to go to alpha to ask. But since my girlfriend, Gillian has reprimanded the former head mistress I assume alpha must know too. I will ask if you really like him.” He then picked up the remote control and turned on the TV in the kitchen as he got on with eating his cereal.

Lorraine was about to speak but gasped at the tv screen “That’s the boy and his family. Oh my god. They are being sent to dungeons for housing illegal possessions in their home.”

Lucas said “He does illegal stuff. I don’t think he was a good choice. Choose another guy to take to prom.”

Lorraine said “That’s impossible. There is no way. Look it says the humans claim the possessions have been planted and they had no knowledge. They housed stolen property but they have never seen it before...”

Lucas said “That’s what they always say. Lorraine. Just forget this kid. How can you know he is innocent. They have possessions for spying. So they are working with spies. They are a criminal family.”

Lorraine said “You will be the one interrogating them. You can find out.”

Lucas said “Me? No they don’t come to me. Alpha sorts treason out normally and my girlfriend, Gillian. I am accompanying her at work today though. I will see what I can do. But my advice is move on. Find another guy. You even don’t know you like him. Do you really like him? If you do, I will go to court for him.”

Lorraine looked at tv screen sounding defeated “No. I just wanted to dance with someone. I don’t know if I like him. He was just nice and said yes but because he was afraid of me probably.”

Lucas said “You will find a boyfriend Lorraine. Don’t worry. You are too young. I prefer it if you go to prom single. I went alone last year. There is nothing wrong. Then you can dance with any single guy you want. Now eat your breakfast and go to your room. If you are good I will take you to dress rehearsals tonight.”

Lorraine’s face lit up “I will be good. I promise. But can you try to help that human family. I think they might be framed.”

Lucas said “Trust me. The forensic team can tell easily. I wouldn’t worry about that.”

After Lucas finished his cereal he found a banana milk shake in front of himself. Lorraine said “Its for you.”

Lucas said “If this is so I lift your sanction you are wasting your time. You are still grounded until I say so. But I will have the milkshake anyway.” Lucas chuckled at the look on Lorraine’s face but then was interrupted when he heard his alphas voice on tv giving a statement. It was breaking news.

Gavin gave out his statement with his alpha voice from his office “From this day onwards, no human is allowed to consort with a werewolf in anyway. No friendships or relationships are allowed. If a human is found with a werewolf in any gathering or place of residence, the humans are sent to the dungeons and the werewolves will be sent to detention centres and boot camps for first offences.”

Lucas couldn’t believe gavin. Why?

Gavin carried on “This is a temporary measure brought in due to humans not knowing their place in the society and abusing their privileges. Until further notice, all humans are restricted to live in outer part of city and working in mines and farms only. No human is allowed inside the city. They are allowed no possessions except clothes and only can speak when spoken to by their employers. We protect our young people in our society. We have a duty to protect all. The family of our beta was insulted by a human and we fight those responsible.”

Lorraine gasped “What... This is an over reaction.... Is it all my fault.”

Lucas was choking on his milk shake now. Why was the alpha doing this for his sister? “No it’s not your fault. You heard him. A human insulted you. Accept it.”

Lorraine growled “I will go to alpha gavin and will tell him where to stick his rubbish.” She then stood up to walk to the door.

Lucas stood and roared “If you walk out of that door, I will charge you with domestic misconduct and disobedience of your superior.”

Lorraine froze. Her brother had a military rank. She didn’t dare move. Her beta genes were telling her to move but she didn’t dare disobey the direct order from her beta brother. She turned slowly “Lucas. Please let me go speak to him.”

Lucas said “He will make it worse for humans. Trust me. You saw how he reacted. You were attracted to a human. He took it as insult to you and blamed the human. If you go to him, he may execute all humans for you.”

Lorraine felt helpless “But why?”

Lucas said “Because you are of beta blood. You are my sister. Alpha cares about you like he always did. You heard him. He said it’s just a temporary measure. When he calms down and thinks humans have paid enough he would reverse the order. Now eat your breakfast and go to your room. I am not asking you Lorraine Isabelle. No words are allowed to be spoken by you unless I speak to you. Sit. Eat. Go to your room and study.” He then went back to his seat and sat down drinking his milk shake.

Lorraine was pleading to her brother with her eyes but he didn’t let her speak more. She poured herself some milkshake and sat down silently looking at the tv.

Lucas noticed the tower block where kelly Anne lived in the news. There were fighters ambushing the place and taking humans with handcuffs while omegas were watching. A few protectors and healers were around too watching. Some were talking to the fighters. Kelly Anne was outside with some other protectors. Damn. The fighters had enough and handcuffed them. Damn if Kelly Anne got herself arrested. Lucas quickly stood up. He said “I will send the care takers and some guards to the mansion. They would report to me if you are not studying. Get to your room. You are grounded. Turn off the tv.” He then walked outside and got into his Chevrolet. He couldn’t believe this. Why did she interfere. She was a magnet for trouble. He made his way to the tower block and found the military vehicles that had captives inside. Lucas walked to the captain “I need kelly Anne out. I need to deal with her personally. I will make recordings on her file.”

The captain complied and went to one of the vehicles and walked with kelly Anne. Lucas’s blood was boiling as he could see the captain touching her. He also had seen other soldiers touching her arm. He was going to make them pay somehow at work soon.

Kelly Anne watched his guardian angel across the street as the captain roughly dragged her in handcuffs to the beta. As he reached the beta “All yours sir.”

Lucas muttered “Dismissed captain,” He then stared down kelly Anne for a few seconds and then said “You put yourself in danger again. How many times do I have to save you.” He then signed as he grabbed her arm and lead her to his Chevrolet “Get in my car. I can’t I cuff you so no one thinks I am giving you special treatment.”

Kelly Anne understood. She got into the front seat of the car and he put the seat belt on for her. He then got into the car and drove away. He was big happy at all “Do you have any idea how close you are coming to getting sent to a detention centre? I can’t save you once you go in there. I am not going to lie. I have never tried breaking anyone out of there. The alpha doesn’t pardon people who go there. I can help you keep outside it. But you want to land inside it.”

Kelly Anne asked guiltily “Are everyone else getting sent there?”

Lucas sighed “Every single one. You defied the alpha by protesting outside. I can say on your file, you were tricked. I am a beta. I can tweek your interrogations. You just have to sign it. Since you are new you get away with things.”

He then reached the main state building and got off the car. He pulled her out of the car and dragged her by the arm “Sorry I have to be rough to make it look like I am doing this seriously.” He sounded annoyed.

Kelly Anne didn’t know why he went into so much trouble. He took her to the lobby and then walked with her a few flights of stairs down. The interrogation rooms were dark and damp afew levels below the ground. He took her to a room and pointed to a chair “Sit down.” He then went to sit behind a computer “I will bring your file up and will fix it.”

Kelly Anne whispered “Why do you help me? I don’t think I deserve to be saved. Save your attempts for your mate. Why help me?”

Lucas said to himself “Oh, but you are my mate.” He then said “Are you complaining?”

Kelly Anne said “No.”

Lucas remained silent and kept on typing without asking her anything. After minutes of typing. He sent a document to printer and retrieved it. “You need to sign this. This would make your record clean. No one can question my judgement.”

Kelly Anne asked again “Why are you doing this.”

Lucas uncuffed her “Walk to my desk, sign that paper and memorise it. Now.”

Kelly Anne didn’t move “It makes no sense why you put your life on the line for me. It’s too much.”

Lucas said “No this is nothing. My father.... did much more for my mother. Not many people know this but my mother is human. My father had to endure a lot ... Do you have your answer now?”

Lorraine gasped “A human ... and a beta? How? Humans can only be with omegas.”

Lucas said “I don’t know. My father managed it. He handled my mother with care. Now the laws have changed and become even stricter. All because my sister went down the same route. Alpha didn’t like it. Humans are shunned just like other districts now. But I will see what I can do to change the alphas mind. I will try. But you must try to not get into trouble. Leave the fighting to the top ranks. You just survive kelly Anne. I want you to keep safe.”

Kelly Anne was looking at Lucas in a new light. He was so caring. He was half human and he was a beta powerhouse. Werewolf genetics were totally dominant. So werewolves didn’t even need to feel threatened by mixing with humans but they wanted to just show superiority and prejudice.

Kelly Anne said “Why are you so nice? You don’t belong here Lucas. You belong somewhere better. You certainly deserve better than Gillian.”

Lucas’s expression changed “Don’t ever mention the alphas. They can end both of us Kelly Anne. You can’t take them on. The power of an alpha is beyond your imagination. They can lead the whole city to crush you and any one resisting with you. Alphas are dangerous. Don’t mess with them. I can save you from everything and everyone except from the wrath of an alpha. I don’t have that power.”

Kelly Anne said “If I am meant to get hurt then I will. You have a sister you said. You need to live on for her. Don’t worry about me. Let me face the consequences. I forbid you to try to save me again.”

Lucas took a step towards her making her feel the force of his power that made her look away “I give the orders here Kelly Anne. Not you. You must obey your beta.”

She breathed “Yes beta.”
