It was a dark night, unusually quiet for New Year's Eve. The landscape was wrapped in a white duvet, small snowflakes falling softly in the dim light of the moon and a few stars that decided to come out tonight.
Each household was full of family harmony and alcohol. Adults enjoyed happiness and a better new year, children quietly drank children's champagne and watched fairy tales. Then there were those who no longer fit in with children, but did not belong to adults either.
This was the case of Nick, who was sitting quietly in his room, at the window, watching the flakes falling softly.
There were a few minutes until midnight. Another year when his eyes didn't change color. Will next year be the same? Will his eyes still be blue?
He looked away from the window, unable to watch his eyes reflect in the window.
He doesn't fit into the family, everyone around him steps on his toes, and they definitely don't treat him like before. He just doesn't fit in this world. He cannot look at how everyone around him has a soul mate. Where is his? He is eleven. Five years. Five years and his future girlfriend nowhere. Why?
He quickly wiped the restless tears from his beautiful eyes. He won't cry. That's not a disadvantage, is it? Unlike others, his life is not governed by when, where and how he meets his other half.
He took a breath, and when his name came from the living room, he stood up and joined his family. The time for a New Year's toast is approaching. There are three minutes left until the new beginning.
He took orange juice and took a breath.
"Ten," his entire family began to count down.
"Nine," his hands clap, the juice shaking in his glass just like him.
"Eight," he closed his eyes, trying to calm himself.
"Seven," he must admit.
"Six," he wants his soul mate.
"Five," he doesn't want to be alone.
"Four," he wants to be loved.
"Three," he opened his eyes and looked at the juice in his glass.
"Two," it's here.
"One!"
"Happy New Year!" Everyone wished and drank their glasses to the bottom.
Nick set down his glass and was about to return to his room when his little cousin stopped him.
She pointed her finger at her eye. "Your eye." She said, watching him with interest.
Nick jerked and ran to the bathroom. He has to look in the mirror! And he did.
Hazel brown.
His soulmate has the most beautiful eye color he has ever seen.
A big smile began to adorn his face.
Damn, those eyes.
