“Hey! Sakasu!”
I walk into the art room, and immediately, I hear the voice of a good friend. I wave to my friend, offering a smile.
“Nova! How are you?”
A girl with a white ribbon headband in her blue hair walks up to me. Her green eyes shimmer with excitement, and I can see her classic smile on her freckled face. She puts her hands in the pockets of her black jeans, rocking back and forth on her pure white sneakers.
“I’m well! I had a pretty relaxing weekend with all of my siblings, so I can’t complain.” Nova bounces a little. “How was your sleepover with Amai on Friday?”
“Great, actually! Mama Winter made us tortellini. Oh, and we watched movies all night. Will definitely do it again.”
“Aw, sounds like you two had fun!” Nova giggles. “If I didn’t have four siblings, I’d totally invite you two over for a sleepover of our own.”
“Hey, that’s understandable.”
I start to look around the classroom. I’ve realized that Nova and I are missing a pal for this class.
“Have you seen Saisho yet?”
“Hm. No, I don’t think so. He might be running late; you know how he spends time making his coffee in the morning.”
“True.” I laugh. “Well, while we wait, shall we go secure our table?”
“Sure!”
Nova and I walk over to our normal table. I like where we sit in class. The three of us sit near some windows. There’s something interesting about watching the sun rise in the mornings while I complete assignments for class. I always feel good at the end of this class.
I pull out my chair and sit down, sighing as I look at the sky. My chin rests upon my hand as I admire the colors mixing with the clouds. This world gives us so many pretty things to admire.
As I think about that, my thoughts are brought back to my conversation with Aura on Friday. She said she’s from Destiny, and even full-blooded. There’s so much I want to ask her about Destiny, but I don’t know what she would or would not answer. Does this world have similarities with Destiny? What differences are there if there are any? There have to be some differences, since she said there are things that are only found or made in Destiny, like my Written Charm.
I have so many questions.
“Hey!” Nova speaks up as she sits down, “Good morning Saisho!”
I look over to the door. A somewhat short guy with hair the color of Nova’s walks over to us. He takes off his beanie, and some of his hair floofs up. His gray eyes have a gentle gaze within them, and a smile is on his face. He raises his hand to us, and I see his classic coffee mug in his possession.
“Good morning, Nova and Sakasu.” Saisho takes a quick sip of his coffee before sitting down at the table. He puts the mug down before pushing back the sleeves of his navy blue hoodie. Saisho yawns for a moment and runs a hand through his hair. “Did the two of you have a nice weekend?”
I nod. “Sure did.”
“Yep!”
“Well, I’m glad to hear that.” Saisho warmly smiles at us. He looks over to the art shelves. “I’m going to grab my supplies. Be right back.”
Before Saisho gets up, I notice something strange. I always knew Saisho had his ears pierced, but now I notice a new earring. On his right ear, there’s a small, dark blue gemstone on his lobe. I knew he had an industrial in his left ear, and normally two black studs for his lobes. But today, his lobes are mismatched. That’s the first I’ve ever seen or noticed this.
Wait. Could it be?
I quietly put my hand on the flower charm of my choker, just as I did at Amai’s house. I start to look around Saisho for any hazes like I saw with Aura’s necklace. My heart is pounding as I search for a sign, any sign that could give me an answer.
And that’s when I see it. A very faint, but dark blue wisp of a haze. It’s on Saisho’s right side, similar to the haze that came from Aura’s necklace. My eyes widen when I notice it, and a smile creeps on my face.
“Whoa, you okay?” I hear Nova speak.
I look over to her, keeping my hand on my choker for a moment. I noticed something with her too. Her left arm is resting on the table, and there’s a small turquoise haze coming from her wrist. I can’t tell what it’s coming from, but it’s the exact same haze as Saisho’s, but in a different color.
“I’m fine.” I whisper, nodding as I take my hand off the choker. The hazes fade away. “Just looking around. I think I should grab my supplies too.”
“Alright!” Nova giggles.
I get up, and as I walk over to the shelves, I’m about to move past Saisho. He uses his free hand to stop me from walking for a second.
“I like that choker.” He says quietly out of nowhere. “Where’d you get it?”
My eyes widen again. “Uh, Mom got it for me.” That’s what I told Amai earlier, right? I need to make sure I’m keeping my story straight about this thing, just in case.
“Oh.” Saisho purses his lips, frowning a tad. He squints for a minute, then shrugs. “Alright. I like it. It suits you.”
I smile. “Thank you.”
I’m finally released from his hand. I reach the shelves, and I look for my project. My thoughts run wild. Did Saisho believe me? I can’t tell what that was all about, but it only increased the amount of questions I have. These questions keep running through my head as I grab my project and materials. Are Nova and Saisho both Written? I just want these questions answered, but the more I find out about any of this stuff on Destiny, I think of more questions.
As I walk back, I notice Nova and Saisho looking at each other. I only see Nova’s facial expression, and I notice some sort of surprise in her eyes. The back of Saisho’s head nods, as if the two of them are having a silent conversation of sorts.
How?
Nova looks up at me, and she smiles again when I sit down. She looks at Saisho again, then nods. Her eyes lock with mine as she bounces again.
“So, are you going to tell me and Saisho the truth?” Nova’s voice suddenly rings in my head as she grins.
My mouth falls open. I’m rendered speechless. How did she do that? Is that something a Written can do? As I look between both Nova and Saisho, I raise an eyebrow and start to shake my head.
“How-”
Immediately, both Saisho and Nova put a finger to their lips, hushing me the same way that Aura did on Friday.
“Sakasu. You can respond to us like this, too.” Saisho’s voice now rings in my head. I watch as he gestures to his earring, putting a finger on it. “Don’t freak out. It’s okay. Neither of us are mad.”
Slowly, I put my hand back on the flower. The turquoise and dark blue hazes I saw near Nova and Saisho reappear.
“How is this possible?” I mentally sigh. “You… can you hear me?! And I can hear you?!”
Nova nods quietly. “It’s a Written thing. If individuals have a close enough bond, they can communicate telepathically.” She pulls back the sleeve of her sweatshirt, revealing a silver and turquoise beaded bracelet. There’s a haze coming off the jewelry even as she puts the sleeve back over it.
“So you’re both Written?”
Saisho and Nova nod in answer at the same time. Suddenly, I see him reaching out for my hand across the table. I quickly hold his hand, and I look up to see the smile on his face.
“And if you have questions, we’ll answer everything we can after school.”
