Perhaps the most controversial aspect to the Imperium's reach across the stars is the voluntary or coerced acquisition of Shells.
A Shell is a person who has been drained of their free will and vitality. All they know is the will of the Empress, their energy going to pave the Paradise Path. Any who volunteer are promised a place at her side once Paradise is reached.
Commander Gareth Sonder did not volunteer.
Gareth can remember a time before he served the Empress, a time when he was a true leader not just a figurehead, when he was a husband, a father... but those memories are no longer relevant to his current purpose.
