On his side, System 777 emerged.
The system is the one responsible for handling the information and data about its host. It has many purposes – they can be used as resumes or Identification Cards – and should be present beside the host at all times. It could be said that systems are the transmigrators’ main life line and the only connection they have with the Ninth Heaven.
System 777 processed the new data uploaded into its database. The rank relegation has an influence on the worlds they could enter, and System 777 is evaluating it to select the worlds and roles Jin Wei could receive. It may appear to be a tedious task, yet the system deemed it to be rather simple. It took advantage of the time Jin Wei was storing his memories to complete everything before returning to his side.
The little silver ball popped up near Jin Wei as he drifted softly on the swing. It handed him the identification card he used to open the room. Jin Wei ceased his swinging and received the card, examining its contents.
The card is roughly the size of a bank card, thin and cool to the touch. The term "Ninth Heavens" was printed in the top center of the card, with the department name beneath it. Jin Wei is a member of the Soul Division, especially the Transmigration and Reincarnation Department. His name appears on the lower right side of the card, along with his job position on the Ninth Heaven. It is followed by a series of numbers signifying his control number.
His role was written on the left side of the card. The ranks of the roles are represented by an alphabet, and the role he belongs into is listed under it. Just yesterday, the letter on the level was "Y."
Today, his role was changed to Mob Character Z.
Jin Wei swept his other free hand in the air, and an item appeared. It was a card reader. He swiped the card on it, prompting a translucent screen to display in front of him, showing all of the information System 777 had finished reviewing. It looks like a status bar, with his name, age, full and half-body pictures, money, and other important information displayed on it. He scrolled across the screen, skimming over the profile carelessly.
System 777 circled his head once before settling on his fluffy cozy hair.
"Mob Character Z, that sounds pretty interesting," Jin Wei remarked. For amusement, he clicked the enormous type letter "Z" on the screen many times.
System 777 blinked its large pencil-drawn eyes and commented, 「You will be the very first Mob Character Z in the existence of the Ninth Heaven.」
"Really? Then it means I almost took a lot of Ninth Heaven's first," Jin Wei chuckled.
He is the very first Mob Character Z, and also Mob Character Y, Mob Character W, Mob Character P... On the records, he indeed had taken all of these position without a second place. The reason for that is because Jin Wei is the only soul who is foolish yet courageous enough to challenge fate.
The lowest default role a transmigrator could get is the cannon fodder role level Z. The majority of souls undertaking the cannon fodder role would receive levels between "E" and "A," and those who would receive levels below these are seen to be extremely unfortunate and quite rare. Jin Wei is more fortunate on his first role when he transmigrated, a second male lead character on level W.
That’s why nobody heard of the “Mob Character” role until Jin Wei took the path of getting demotions to attain the lower of the “lowest” default role.
The point is, why would Jin Wei want the lowest position?
It could be said that when Jin Wei approached the highest level of the Protagonist's Role after a thousand transmigrations where he only lacked a single point to advance and become a god, he suddenly realized something bewildering. He asked the system out of blue a few questions that he kept on pondering about for so long.
He remarked first, "How do systems earn their paychecks," and then, "Do you guys get paid?" ”
System 777 truthfully replied「System's promotion and salaries are based on the Host's performance. As long as the Host could finish the task in a hundred percent grade, it is full points for the system.」
"So, you mean that as long as the Host could finish the tasks of the world, there is a guarantee of salary?"
「Yes, you are right. If the Host can finish all the tasks of that world, the system will be guaranteed a full salary. The world's task statistics serve as the account for deduction and penalties.」
"Then, is it also right to assume that the salary of the System having a Cannon Fodder Host and another System with the Protagonist Host is the same? Considering that both completed the tasks."
「...」
Suddenly, System 777 was quiet. It somehow gleaned something from Jin Wei’s query. If compensation is determined by the number of tasks throughout the world that the Host has successfully accomplished, then regardless of the function the Host plays, the system will get rewarded.
It’s possible that the efficiency with which some hosts execute in performing their jobs explained why some systems complain about the low level of their hosts. It is pretty obvious that C-listers, especially the cannon fodders, struggle to execute their objectives since they lack the experience and are unreliable, which results in pay reductions for their systems.
The hosts’ capacities to carry out the assigned tasks are more important than their roles in the world they are staying. Roles on the higher spectrum profit from their merit, which provides them advantages in their tasks that made completing missions easier. The difference between the two kinds of transmigrators are their experience and luck.
The system took a longer time to respond. Its mechanical voice replied.
「You are... you are also correct.」
Jin Wei expected the answer and grinned. "Then, what is the reason why roles existed? Why does it have an independent set of rules and does not wholly affect the systems in terms of fully completing the tasks?"
「What are you trying to say?」
"I remembered failing a few worlds but it only led to a loss of points or the risk of soul extermination," Jin Wei pointed out.
The transmigrators must meet a minimum grade criterion in each world. The transmigrator had the option of abandoning the task once they attained the required percentage or finishing it completely. Most people choose to do tasks, though, because the more tasks they accomplish, the more credits they may exchange for incentives.
The Ninth Heavens established several criteria as penalties since transmigrators occasionally are unable to complete worlds, especially those with a higher degree of difficulty. The least severe punishment is to pay up points, and the harshest is to have their soul destroyed. Although Jin Wei believed it to be reasonable, he yet felt that something was lacking in this arrangement.
"Finishing worlds and obtaining enough points can be exchanged for promotion of roles. Since there is such thing as promotion, why don’t they demote roles? Do you think that before the soul could reach criteria for extermination, shouldn’t there be a demotion first?”
The system flew up and perched on his shoulders. Jin Wei intimately patted the head of the silver ball.
"If a person commits a mistake at work, he will receive punishments. First offense will get that person's salary deducted, second offense is a demotion, and the last offense would be getting fired."
Following the logic, the system understood what Jin Wei wanted to say.
「...Indeed, I never heard of demotion before.」
"Yeah, right? So, I was thinking, how about I will try a demotion next time?"
「A demotion? But all of your hard work-」
"As long as I can finish all the tasks, you will have no problems, right?"
The system is a bit hesitant. There is indeed no problem with doing it.
Though salaries are important, how could it compare to an old system's bank account? If only the system is not afraid of being exterminated it would just laze around watching some movie or something.
「Yes, that's true.」
"Then I’ll simply accomplish all the tasks; furthermore, if demotion is feasible, consider how tasks would be simpler with lower levels. It is not that the tasks of being a protagonist are tough, but when compared to the work done by the side characters, the protagonists bear a lot of burden.”
Very troublesome.
「Well, the protagonists are considered as the main characters of the worlds.」
So most of their tasks are comprised of significant tasks that could influence the world's orders.
"Exactly, so don't you think it will be good if we can just travel worlds and relax as though we are just on vacation? We have been all over the dimensions for a thousand years, it would be good to have some lazy time."
「That's a good thing. There is nothing wrong with that.」
System 777 is also a very old system so it just agreed to Jin Wei. As long as it can receive its salary, it has no objections. After all, like Jin Wei, System 777's seniority isn't something small. It has also guided a few numbers of transmigrators before Jin Wei and had collected enough wealth to last forever.
Also, after wandering around the worlds blindly following the Ninth Heaven's tasks, it's a good thing to have an objective. After all, Jin Wei has no home to return to or any reason for his transmigration.
Finding a reason to explore is already good enough.
