In Brasil we dress in white and jump seven waves to start the year.
Lots of people think this is for good luck, but it has it's origins in Umbanda's ritual in honor of Yemanjá, the orixá of the oceans.
Umbanda, being a afro-brasilian religion, is usually targeted with religious racism, but syncretism made this tradition popular among brasilians regardless of their religion or lack of one.
