The rest of the day was uneventful. He thought about calling Danni but chose not to. Making an ass out of himself the night before. He figured it would be best to let her cool off some. Well, he was the one that really needed to cool off. Tink asked him the next day if he knew anything about Danni. That she sounded upset on the phone with her. Dustin lying saying she was fine the last time he saw her. No mention of their kiss.
Trevor carried him to the DMV even after he said he would be fine walking to but got told no. Apparently, Trevor had gotten some news from Mike about what happened with the shipment the week before.
“Mike wants you back in a position like yesterday. Says no one can get things handled like you can and I agree with him.” Trevor spoke cutting the engine in the DMV parking lot.
“I’ve told Mike I can’t. At least not right now. He fucking knows that.” Dustin was so frustrated that Mike wouldn't listen to him.
“Look he doesn’t care and you don’t have the power to say otherwise.” Trevor putting it point-blank.
“Why can’t someone else do it? He’s been without me this whole time.”
“I don’t ask questions and neither did you before. We do as told and move on.” Trevor motioned that he was done talking, “You don’t want to piss Mike off. I know we were all buddies back in the day but Mike has changed.”
Dustin slammed the door of the car as he got out, pissed off with the orders he was being given. He didn’t need it right now. Six months was all he asked for. Six months of laying low then he would be back. Hasn’t even been three weeks since he’s gotten out and Mike is already barking at him to handle his mess. Dustin was over cleaning up for Mike. Even more pissed at the fact Mike has seemed to have forgotten about the real reason behind him being the leader.
His attitude carried on into his written portion of his driving test. Snapping the pencil they gave him in half not once but twice. Didn’t get any good looks about his anger but he passed it. Doing his best to calm himself before he got into a car with another person. Once again seated in the smallest car possible for a man of his size, sending the seat all the way back.
Following the instructions that were given to him. Wondering what the DMV member was writing down on his clipboard every time he made a turn. It looked to be more than just a simple checkmark.
“Congrats you passed again. You’ll get your hard copy in the mail in a few weeks. Other than that just keep this slip of paper on you and you'll be fine.”
The woman sounded so overjoyed as she stamped the bottom of his paper sliding it over to him to sign then told him to have a good day. Walking out of the DMV he felt like he should be happy, one step closer to normal life now that he could legally drive himself around. Tink stopped him at the front door once he got home telling him that Mike called and wanted to see him, now. The reassuring pat on his back as he turned around didn’t help him much at all.
Fist pounding on the front door of Mike's house usually it was just left unlocked. Especially if he knew someone was going to be coming over, calling out for him as he moved over to the front window peering in not seeing anyone.
“The fuck.” He cursed turning to leave.
“What? I’m trying to study. Why are you banging on my door anyway?” Questioned Danni all at once.
Pulling the earbuds out, standing in the front door looking at him. Smirking as he noticed Tink finally talked him into trusting her with some clippers. Dustin felt he needed to look decent for his driver's license photo. Teeth biting her bottom lip as she looked at him, feeling that pull towards him that she fought off all week.
“I was told Mike wanted me.”
“Mike hasn’t been home all day.”
Danni wasn’t lying either; he was gone when she got up this morning for school and wasn’t home when she got back from work. Personally, she didn’t start worrying till the end of day two started to roll around. Most of the time he was just at the clubhouse or with Tiffany. Dustin moves back up the front steps towards Danni eyeing her little pink shorts and her see-through white tank top.
“Then why tell Tink to tell me to walk my ass all the way over here for nothing?”
“You’re welcomed to wait for him if you like.”
Danni moved back out of the doorway giving him room to walk inside.
“No, I’ve already had a long day at the DMV. If he wants me he knows where I’m at.”
Dustin turned away again over the middleman messages he kept sending. If he wanted him he could come and find him in himself then. As he moved away Danni reached out grabbing his arm causing him to stop in his tracks.
“Well did you pass?”
She hadn’t spoken to him since that last night together so she wasn’t sure what he had been up to in the past week. She also couldn’t help but notice his lip was still healing up from where she bit him so hard too. Still feeling like she was in the right to do so. He wasn’t listening to her but she also felt bad about it.
“Yeah. Why would I fail?”
Dustin saw her staring at his lip, “Sorry about that. I don’t know what came over me.”
Hand rubbing the back of his neck, feeling uncomfortable standing there. “It won't happen again. Anyway, you have to study so I’ll be at Tinks if Mike shows up.”
Taking his leave again, making it all the way down the front steps this time before Danni spoke up pulling him back to her.
“What if I want it too?”
“Want what?” He questioned looking down at her, not sure what she meant by it completely.
“To kiss me, stupid.” Danni stomped her foot on the ground as she spoke.
Her cheeks flushed. That was all she had been thinking about him kissing her but also going at a slower pace something she was comfortable with not the pushy let's do it in the backseat, Dustin.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea.” He spoke his words betraying him.
That was not what he had expected to come out of his mouth right then. His manhood instantly pissed off at him, again. One part of him pulled towards her wanting all of her, all he thought about was her and the other just kept saying no. He fucked up already and he would fuck it up again. It wouldn't ever work so why even try.
Danni hurt at his words of rejection. He didn’t want to kiss her. He didn’t want to be with her. Was she still a little girl to him or not good enough? Would she ever be good enough for someone?
“Fine. I’ll let Mike know you stopped by.” Danni hid the hurt she felt as she shut the door locking it behind her.
One deep breath in and Dustin knew he just fucked up again. Fist banging on the door, hoping to god she would open it.
