Kairyn Cortez
I was woken up several hours later to loud banging on the cell bars. My cell bars. Groggily fumbling to get up, I made my way to the entrance with a look of pained annoyance.
My arm at this point was a deep shade of purple and swollen making my arm look like one of those blow-up noodle balloons but in the shape of a hand. A purple hand. How the hell did I sleep through a broken arm?
Running my hand through my now disheveled hair, I gave the officer who was standing there with his keys a questioning look.
“You’re free to go Cortez.” He said with a flat voice and a bored expression.
I stood there speechless with my mouth open slightly like an idiot. “What?”
Motioning for me to get a move on, I followed him through the halls. I had only been there for about two days and was more than surprised that they were letting me go. Me, a possible suspect of all people. Not that I wasn’t happy about it, it just left me with too many questions.
We reached a door and he stopped. Opening the door he once again motioned for me to move. What greeted me upon entry was an officer and a man in a suit. The officer was an older man with graying hair and a slightly chubby build. He wore round glasses and had a smile on his face, unlike the other officer who led me here.
The second man, the one in the suit had a short appearance and a thin figure. He looked about middle-aged with dirty blonde hair and stressed as hell. He was looking at the papers that were neatly stacked in front of him, only giving me a nod of acknowledgment as I entered the room.
“Have a seat miss Cortez.” The officer said as he gestured to the seat in front of both of them on the other side of the table. Sitting down on the chair I continued to watch both of them in silence.
Clearing his throat the officer began. “My name is officer McKinley and this is Mr. Emerson. As you may now know miss Cortez, you are free to go. Our investigation has cleared you of being a suspect.”
“How?” I questioned with great curiosity.
“Well, you see the video recordings show exactly what you were doing and where you were moments before the body was found.” Opening a laptop that I hadn’t noticed he had he, clicked a few things before turning it towards me.
On the screen, it showed me moments before the alleged murder. It showed me walking out of the photoshoot building into the rain. Me being the dumbass that day hadn’t brought an umbrella even though I had checked the weather the night before. Lifting my bag up over my head I watched as I ran into the storm in heels.
The video cut off and started from a different camera that was a few blocks from the murder site. As I watched myself I knew what followed next because of those fucking heels. The me on the camera tripped over nothing and fell on the wet sidewalk, immediately releasing the bag I was holding to try and soften the blow.
Internally I facepalmed because of the sheer embarrassment that I felt at this very moment. Just how many people had seen this video so far? I watched as a knife slid under me and moments later the corpse fly out of nowhere, following the screaming banshee who stood near me.
Pulling the laptop back to him he held eye contact with me as he continued to speak in a calm voice. “From what we have found and the autopsy reports of the murder victim, he had already been dead for several hours prior. He had probably been dead since that morning.”
I stared at him in shock as the facts sunk in. Wait. So now how do I explain what I saw in the alley? The person was stabbed and literally exploded right in front of me.
“From what you told us during your questioning the killer probably came back to make sure he was dead, adding an extra surprise to the corpse as they threw it out into the open.”
Huh. That explains a lot. Now the only thing that’s left is the actual killer themselves and I knew exactly who it was, but I wasn’t about to say anything. Yet.
“Anyways miss Cortez, I should probably move on to more pressing matters though. The other witness, along with yourself will be released as we have also cleared them. Mr. Emerson here will be your lawyer should any legal issues arise further from this incident.” He gestured to the man sitting next to him in the suit.
Damn. That fake had gone from victim to witness. That’s quite the upgrade.
Turning my head slightly I faced the man in the suit. “Hello miss Cortez. As you have already heard my name is Mr. Emerson, your lawyer. Now before we close everything up for today, I have a few papers that need to be signed for legal issues and for records.” His voice sounded tired and depleted as he explained everything to me. He probably had a long day.
Nodding my head he continued. “These papers here are witness related. Since you had no part in the murder of the victim and there is evidence that proves that, the second batch of papers is legal protection.” He pulled out all of the papers and a pen.
Pushing the papers and pen to me he finished with, “you may begin when you’re ready miss Cortez.”
By the time I had finished signing the papers they had brought my things in a bag and told me to go change back to my regular clothes.
Making my way to the bathrooms I quickly changed into the clothes that I had that day and left. I glanced down at my broken and swollen arm and sighed. I’ll have to pass by the hospital to get this checked out. The worst thing they could possibly have to do at this point is re-break my arm. I also now know that I have a high as fuck pain tolerance. Checking out at the front desk I made my way towards the exit, only to pause as I saw the one and only hysterical banshee.
Quickly making my way to the exit I kept my head down and prayed to every and all things holy, that she wouldn’t notice me.
But as my shitty luck would have it, it had dropped to lower than shit.
That bitch had spotted me.
