Kairyn Cortez
By the time I had made it outside, I was practically running in those godforsaken heels once again. Fuck. Looking around the busy streets I had no idea exactly where I was and couldn’t check my phone for directions either because of the fact that I was trying to get away from the banshee, who was now following me.
“Wait!” I heard her scream as I practically booked it to anywhere but here. All my mind could think of at this point was how to get rid of this bitch.
Taking several turns I made it to a bus stop and for once my luck was graced by the gods themselves. Practically booking it to the waiting bus I quickly got in and swiped my bus pass and lucky for me, I had just barely made it as the bus began to pull out into the road.
A sigh of relief left me as I made my way to the very back of the bus and sat down and finally pulled my phone out to check for directions only to realize that it was dead. Looking at the map I mentally calculated how long it would take to get from here to the hospital. Fifteen minutes. That’s how long it was going to take me to get to the hospital. Pulling out my headphones I plugged them into my iPod, then started skipping through songs until finally, I settled on an Ed Sheeren album. Laying my head against the glass I watched the scene move by me with the occasional stops.
As my stop got closer, I gripped my bag and prepared to get off. How the hell was I going to explain this to the doctor? When the bus stopped I got off and started walking the last couple of blocks to the hospital.
Entering the hospital I walked towards the receptionist, thankful that the line wasn’t too long. As I got closer, I pulled out my hospital card and answered the basic questions before I was handed a clipboard with a stapled packet to fill out. Just as I had finished filling out the packet, my name was called. I followed the nurse to a room where she asked me the same basic questions, then left.
Looking around the room itself, it was the same basic sterile default that every hospital comes with. A few chairs here and there, a bed, cabinets, a sink, and a chair for the doctor with a desk. I feel as if every time they build a hospital the default look is always included and they just never change that look to something else. Convenience, I think. Probably.
I must have been heavily invested in wondering why hospitals never change their rooms from the default that they come with because when the door opened, I jumped and looked up at the chuckling doctor. “It’s good to see you too Kairyn,” he said between chuckles.
Wait. So how does he know me? Taking a good look at the doctor my eyes widened in recognition. “Quince? Since when do you work here?” I asked him in surprise.
“Since the internship had opened. I need hours of experience Ryn. So,” he asked as he sat on the chair across from me while flipping through some papers. “What can I do for you today?”
“Well,” Lifting up my purple balloon arm I dangled it in front of him. “There’s this.”
Looking at me Quince was silent for what felt like an eternity before he spoke. “How? Just how Kairyn?”
“How what? How I’m not screaming in pain or how this happened?”
“Well, both.” Standing up from the chair to examine my arm he whistled. “Damn. Why didn’t you just go to the emergency room?”
“Emergency room? Why? That would have been even more expensive than if I just did what I did by coming here. Also, I’m pretty sure my arm went numb at some point as long as I don’t shift it around too much. Can I also explain how this happened at home?”
“Boy aren’t I lucky for having such a roommate, but I’ll let that slide for now. And you’re telling me that you’d uber to the hospital if you were ever giving birth?”
“Yes. And how does this have to do with giving birth?” I winced as he lightly shifted my arm a bit.”You know what? I should’ve just waited for you to come home and asked you to fix it. Your shift ends at what time? Five? It would have been much cheaper.”
“It was supposed to end in ten minutes actually. I’m actually glad you didn’t wait for me either because we would have had to come right back here anyways,” he replied seriously while turning around to grab a few things. “What color do you want?”
“Black,” I replied without hesitation.
“Black?”
“Yes. I can match it with anything.”
“Okay then. It’s your cast.” Walking out of the room he left me alone, only to appear a few minutes later with even more supplies.
Turning back around to face me, Quince gave me another serious look. “Kairyn.”
“Quince,” I replied back knowing what would follow.
“Kairyn,” he repeated again.
“For the sake of all things Odin, just do it! At least let me have a heroic entrance through the doors of Valhalla,” I spat out hoping he would make it as clean and swift as possible.
“Oh stop being so dramatic Ryn. I’ll make this as fast as possible,” he said as he gently grabbed my arm again.
“I am not dramatic. I’m just-” But I didn’t have a chance to finish that thought as I heard a familiar snap sound, followed by an inconsiderate amount of pain. Before I could scream out a string of curses a nurse walked in with the material for the cast. Damn it! Sucking in a sharp breath, I grit my teeth as both the nurse and Quince worked on my arm. After about thirty minutes of what felt like an eternity, they finally finished, handing me two pills and a cup of water.
“You can wait in the waiting room while I clock out. We can go home after that.” Quince said to me as they both started cleaning up the area. Nodding, I grabbed my things along with the clipboard and made my way to the receptionist to check myself out. As I finished checking myself out I felt a tap on my shoulder. Turning around I saw Quince smile softly before he wrapped his furred leather jacket around me. “Did you not check the weather? It’s cold today.”
“No. I never got to,” I answered back as we made our way outside thankful for the jacket. “What about you though?”
Quince shrugged his shoulders. “Eh, I’ll be fine. We only need to make it to the car.”
As me and Quince made our way to the parking lot I saw the familiar appearance of the exact person that I had been trying to get away from.
Shit! How?
