"If we are to learn anything from the comings and goings of the epochs of history, it’s that the essence of the new world starts as one of many seeds of possibility planted in the minds of those at the end of the old. What determines which seed will conquer in the end is its ability to discover and make the best use of the most fertile matter of the decomposing order. And that the most fertile matter is always the spirit. Gaia, the living spirit of the earth, is that seed whose roots have begun to conquer deep within us because our spirit is so richly decayed. The old God is dead, and with it the old Science; but what we have found is a new understanding that goes beyond that dualism to finally reconcile the origin of our existence with all that we have wrought upon ourselves. We have the ability now to have a new faith in life by redeeming the one thing that connects all and redeems all: our Great Mother. And we, the inheritors of the great scientific tradition, who have the most profound proof of that connection, are the only ones capable of cultivating that seed which will one day grow into a truly wise and advanced civilization. It is no irony that the moment we have gained the capability to finally understand the universe, it comes at the cost of simultaneously destroying that capability. I see now that it really is divine justice, for only with great sacrifice does great wisdom come. For centuries our Mother has sacrificed Herself for us, for our intellectual evolution, and as we reach the apex of our power, in order for the ultimate completion of that journey, we must restore the balance and return the sacrifice to Her. The upheaval wrought by climate change, resource depletion, and pollution is the undeniable fact of this balance. What will carry humanity through to the end of that journey is Gaia, our true nature as one with nature, which we who have been dedicated to studying Her at the end of the world can cultivate." From the writings of Dr. Nia Larkley.
(This is a work in progress) 200 years from now young Eligia and her family live in old Minerva, a city almost abandoned on the edge of a growing desert wilderness. At its center is Arcem Minerva, an arcology run by the new aristocracy and their all-pervasive techno-Gaian religion, where lives the governor and her heir, Galya, who longs to break out of confinement. The paths of these two adventurers are on a slow collision course caught between the dependencies and violent conflicts of their contrasting communities, surrounded by shadowy outlaws and marauders, and soon to be on the frontlines of an imperial power struggle with some unexpected allies.
