"Why does Charles need an arranged marriage?" I asked Austin who was cradling his cup of coffee. We met him after checking on my mum, who happens to be under pills still. As much as I hate Collins's idea, I need the money it will fetch me.
"Can't seem to find the ONE, and every other hussy is interested in his money. He said they aren't wife materials" Austin replied.
"And I am?"
"Since he chose you, that might seem the case. I believe he saw something he likes". I huffed at that. Wife material Indeed.
"That guy is sure weird if he thinks I'll make a good wife". Collins actually laughed at that.
"Yeah, J is a terrible girlfriend, not to say a wife". He stifled his laugh when I gave him an evil glare. Austin smiled.
"Charles desires a normal life that fame and wealth robbed him of. This marriage is his only way at normalcy."
"What's normal about marrying a lady you know nothing about?" I asked perplexed. I don't even know why I am arguing with Austin, he's the messenger here. Besides, the money is all I need.
"Like I said earlier, he picked you himself"
"Fine, as much as I'll like to tear this whole deal apart, my mum needs another heart fast". I said resigned to fate.
"About that, the hospital has been settled"
"What! When? I haven't even signed the contract!" My heart was hammering loudly in my chest.
"We knew you'd accept". He said calmly.
"Am I that predictable?"
"No, but i saw how much you care about your mum". He said ever so calmly.
"Its a good thing, J. Don't think too much about it" Collins tried to console me. Being my best friend, he knows how my train of thought moves. I didn't trust myself to say anything, because I feel so thorn. So confused and reliefed at the same time. I brought out the agreement paper from my shoulder bag and flipped it open. I filled out the form and append my signature at the appropriate place. I passed it to Collins, so he can append his signature as my witness, then slid it towards Austin who was grinning like a puppy. I just signed my life with a stranger for 5 million dollars.
Charles was sitting at the desk in his study when Austin entered. "She signed it" he said handing the agreement papers to him. Charles scanned the it and smiled.
"Thanks, my friend" he said extending his hand for a handshake. Austin took shook hands with his friend before taking a seat across him.
"Anything for you, mate. Everything is set now".
"Yes, it is. What is your opinion about her?" Charles asked, wanting to know if he made the right choice.
"She's a good girl, man". He said
"Good, then the plan is in motion. All we need to do now is make sure this works, there is no chance for failure. When is she moving in?" Charles asked.
"After her mum's surgery" Austin said.
"That's good enough. Continue to keep an eye on her and make sure the press stays away. I don't want them blowing this out of proportion before it even starts". Charles instructed.
"Okay, what about her friend?" Austin asked
"Keep an eye on him too". He replied non-challantly. Once Jane moves in, he won't have to worry about his friend. He thought to himself. This will be good. Real good.
