I have been putting this episode off for a long time. Partially for feeling incapable of drawing some of the stuff I had in mind, but also conflictedness over the script. My hope was to make it informative yet still somewhat poetic, and concise enough as to not overwhelm the 4 panels with a bunch of words.
I want to treat the work that Tori and Riri do seriously, to pass on both my feeling of awe at the grand, alchemical nature of making and firing pottery in a massive wood burning kiln, as well as the feeling of loss over our shriveling relationships with the environment and artisanal work of this kind.
Tori and Riri are a couple who live and work together. Tori is also a cat. Making and firing pottery in their kiln on the side of a mountain for the people of the town below, they get fun visitors from time to time, and they love to play music when they have free time. Inspired by the art of Akira Toriyama, Tsuge Yoshiharu, Nekojiru, Fumiko Takano, Kyoko Okazaki, Shigesato Itoi, Kunihiko Ikuhara, Suehiro Maruo.
