As you can imagine, of course, loving a person of your own sex at that time (1920/1930) was not a simple thing and unfortunately homosexuals were forced to hide. Society despised this kind of relationship and the consequences could be very harsh... harsher than the hate from a classmate (yes Oliver, we're talking about you). They could ruin your studies, your career, your life...
