Waking up in a dark cage which was moving upward fast didn't seem right. The girl tried to remember who she was or where she was. But nothing came to mind. She looked around the box, which was maybe ten feet by ten feet. It wasn't that big, after an eternity the box came to a stop, she looked around for a place to hide not knowing what or who was going to open it.
The girl decided to hide behind a few boxes that didn't have anything in them. A few moments later, the doors to the cage opened. She held her breath, not wanting to get caught. Someone hopped down in the cage with her, "Where's the greenie?" a British accent called out, "There isn't one." A rough voice said. She had a feeling deep inside her that she knew who the person was.
"What do you mean, there isn't one?" The same voice from earlier called out. "It's exactly, what I said, Newt. There isn't a new shank." the deep voice started, "Someone go get Alby." he finished. A few others came in and started to get the boxes and stuff out as they were waiting for what she would assume to be their leader.
Everyone got out of the box, and the doors closed, letting out a sigh of relief, hearing hushed conversation outside of the box. As time went on. The girl soon became tired and fell asleep against the cold metal.
About two hours later, the doors to the box were yanked open once again. Two people hopped in, making the box shake. The girl looked frightened but stayed where she was not, making any noise.
"The box doesn't go down if someone is in it." A strong voice said, "We know you're in here. Just come out. No one wants to hurt you." They stated. She didn't trust her voice, so she peeked her head out, looking at the pair. She saw a tall African American man and a taller guy with freckles and weird eyebrows.
Both guys looked surprised, "Gally, get her out of the box. I need to get the council together." The guy who she assumed was the leader said, getting out of the box. Gally, that name seemed familiar to the girl. She looked at him as he reached his hand out, not wanting to make the wrong first impression, "Lets' get you out. How does that sound?"
She felt like she could trust him, so she nodded, stepping closer to him. He got behind her telling her that he was going to hoist her up, so she could get out of the box. She nodded, allowing him to do so, as she felt herself on some grass. She got a good look at where she was.
As she was out, Gally hopped out next to her. She was already standing, "Hey. It's ok. Welcome to the glade." His voice was soft as he talked to her. As she looked around, she saw multiple guys, but no girls.
"The council will be having a meeting soon, we have to be there. I know you may have a bunch of questions, but keep them until after the meeting." Gally said, then started walking to a building that had a bunch of tables. She walked after him, keeping her head down. Everyone stopped talking as they saw her, "I call dibs!" she heard someone shout. "Shut up! You shuck face as of now the girl is off-limits." Newt shouted, being the second in command that shut everyone up instantly.
Newt limped over. That made the girl curious, why did he have a limp? "Hey, greenie, do you remember your name yet?" He asked. She shook her head. Her stomach growled, she blushed in embarrassment.
Newt chuckled, looking over at Gally. Gally nodded silently, understanding what he wanted, walking off to grab a snack since it wasn't dinner yet.
Newt led the girl to the council room where Alby and all the keepers were waiting. Gally handed a piece of bread and water to the girl. She smiled, appreciating the kind gesture.
"Alright, is everyone ready?" Ably asked. They nodded, they talked about her like she wasn't there, they finally talked about where she would be sleeping, but everyone went silent, not really knowing where she could sleep. Finally, Gally stood up to talk, "She can't sleep with the rest of the shanks. They could try something if they did. Since Alby, Minho, and I have rooms, she should sleep with one of us."
"She's not sleeping with me," An Asian boy started, "I get up too early, that would make her not get enough sleep. Plus, she could have cooties." He finished, causing a few keepers to laugh. Everyone now looked at Gally and Alby. Alby shook his head, "Nothing against the Greenie, but I would rather sleep by myself." They nodded, then turned their eyes to Gally. He crossed his arms over his chest and shrugged, "I don't see why not. If she does anything wrong, she's getting booted out of my room." he said.
"Alright, that seems fair. I think a rule should be added, Rule four don't touch the girl unless it is necessary to do so. Raise your hand if you agree." Alby said, now standing.
Everyone raised their hands, even she did. "Alright, this is dismissed. Everyone back to work." Alby said everyone followed his command and left the council room. Only Alby, Newt, and her stayed behind.
This caused her to get a little jumpy. Since Gally was the only one that had been there since she got out of the box.
"Alright, Greenie, let's give you the tour," Newt said, and off they went. It was weird for Newt because he was always used to the Greenies asking questions, but the girl didn't talk. Finally, they came to the wall of names. She noticed a few carved on the wall names that were crossed out but didn't want to say anything about it. "This is where you will put your name when you remember it. Tonight we will have a bonfire. Tomorrow you will start jobs to see which fits you the best. Any questions?" He asked. She shook her head, he nodded then they started walking back to the homestead.
A few hours passed, it was almost time for the bonfire. Everyone was watching the girl with curious glances as she sat under a tree. She jumped a bit when someone came up beside her, she looked up to see a boy who had curly hair, was on the bigger side. "Hi!" he said, "My name is Chuck." She gave a small wave, "I just came to get you because it's dinner time." She smiled at the boy and stood up, allowing him to lead the way.
They walked to the kitchen and got in line as, soon as they got their food, Chuck went to sit by Newt, Minho, and Gally.
She sat in between Chuck and Newt, eating her dinner when something popped into her head.
Amelia.
She was confused about it at first, then she let out a small gasp. She looked up and looked at the boys. "My name is Amelia." Her voice was soft, having just talked for the first time.
Newt and Minho cheered, which caused the other Gladers to look at them weirdly. "It's nice to finally meet you. Amelia." They said.
Soon it was time for the bonfire. Amelia walked over with Chuck, he ran off to watch the fighting pit. Newt came over and stood next to Amelia while she was watching the fire. "Hey, Greenie. Here try this." He handed her a glass half full of amber liquid. She looked at it for a second before taking a sip. The liquid burned her throat as it went down. She coughed, pushing the drink back into Newts' hand.
He laughed as they walked over to the fighting pit, "Gally is the reigning champion. No one has beaten him yet." She watched him tossed the kid out of the circle, yet again winning. He met her eyes and had a little grin on his face.
"Alright, time for bed!" Alby shouted. Everyone slowly began to disperse to their hammocks. Chuck came over to say goodnight before he left with Newt. Alby stayed watching the fire. While Amelia stood there, unsure where to go.
"Let's go, Greenie." Gally bumped his shoulder with hers, they walked to the homestead. "Take the bed. I'll take the floor." He muttered, climbing into his sleeping bag. She slid under the covers. After a few minutes, she mumbled his name to see if he was awake, "What green bean?" He mumbled, barely awake.
"Will you come lay with me? I'm cold." Amelia whispered, unsure if he heard her. Some shuffling happened, then he climbed into bed, her back was against his chest, "Thank you, Gally." She whispered. Falling into a deep sleep.
