Amelia was awakened by a hand touching her shoulder. It was still dark out. She went to say something, but Newt told her to be quiet, not wanting to wake up the boy that was on the ground.
Amelia slipped out of bed, following Newt out of the homestead. Once out of hearing distance of all the other boys, they stopped walking as they came to the maze wall.
Newt turned to face her, "This is a tradition when every new Greenie comes up. We show you this," He paused, pushing some of the ivy away from the wall. The girl saw a thick window. It was cloudy, which meant it had been there for a while. Amelia looked in the window, but there was nothing there, she was about to look back at Newt, but something caught her eye.
It was the same thing from her dream. This caused her to move back as she did, her back hit Newts' chest. She looked at him with wide eyes and said the only thing she could muster up, "What was that?" Amelias' voice was hoarse.
"That was a Griever. They live in the maze. We have thr-" He paused and corrected himself, "Four rules. Rule one, don't slack off everyone has a job. Two, Never hurt another Glader. Three, never, and I mean never go into the maze unless you are a Glader. Finally, the new rule, No one is allowed to touch you unless it is an emergency." Newt finished making sure she took all the information in.
"Those sound reasonable. What are the jobs?" Amelia asked. "We will get to those. First, you need to add your name to the wall." Newt led Amelia to the wall of names, handing her a knife. She carved her alias right next to Gally and Newts. A hand clasped her back, "Welcome to the glade Greenie." It was Minho. Why was he up so early? "Thank you." She smiled, handing the knife back to the boy.
The walls began to open, which made Amelia jump. She hadn't heard that sound before, yet she had been there for two days. "Alright. Greenie. Time to tell you what jobs there are." Newt said. Minho ran off towards the opening in the wall, saying bye to Newt before he left.
"There are the baggers. They bury the dead and act like the police. Next, we have the bricknicks. They repair little things, basically builders." Newt paused.
Then continued, "Next, we have the builders, They're very good with their hands, but they're not a lot going on upstairs. Gally is the keeper." Amelia let out a soft laugh at what he said.
"We have Frypan. He's the cook of the Glade. He makes sure everyone is fed. Next, we have Medjacks, they are the doctors, Clint and Jeff. They spend most of their time bandaging up the Slicers. We have Slicers. If you like blood, you can be a Slicer. They raise our farm animals, then kill them, making sure we have meat to eat." Newt looked at Amelia, who had a grimaced look on her face. She knew that job wasn't for her.
"We have the sloppers. They clean everything. Trust me, Greenie. You don't want to be a slopper. Finally, we have the Track-hoe and Gardeners. They plant and take care of our vegetables. You will be starting off as a slicer, then slopper, bricknick, bagger, cook, track-hoe, medjack, then finally, builder. Does that sound good, Amelia?" Newt asked the girl, she just nodded. It sounded good enough for her.
The pair went to get breakfast before starting the day. She could tell that she wasn't going to like being a slicer for an hour and thirty minutes. Amelia finished her breakfast, walking with Winston to the blood house. Amelia immediately scrunched her nose up, looking disgusted at the sight of a bloody table she had been brought out of her thoughts by a squealing pig.
Winston put it on the table, looking back at the girl, "Get me the cleaver and hold the pig down." She handed it to him, hesitantly holding the pig against the table. With two good swings, he chopped the head off the animal, managing to get blood over himself and Amelia.
Amelia let go of the now-dead animal and backed up. She looked down at her bloody clothes and ran out of the blood house. Spilling the contents of her breakfast all over the grass, she wiped her mouth as Winston came out. "Looks like you aren't cut out to be a slicer, Greenie." He chuckled at this statement looking at the poor girl.
Not much happened for the next few jobs. By lunchtime, she was passing out lunch for Frypan. She didn't think this was that bad. Amelia got to eat before, and before she knew it, she was shipped off to the builders. Amelia was paired up with a boy she never met. They were adding a roof onto the place where all the gladers slept.
Amelia was stealing small glances at Gally as he worked. She would get butterflies in her stomach. Every time the boy looked back at her, he had a grin on his face. She didn't know why the butterflies were happening. She only knew the boy for two days.
Amelia was getting along great with most of the Gladers. She was really close with Newt and Chuck for it being only two days. The majority of the gladers were pretty nice to her others were not so nice to her, which were two of the boys working with the builders.
She kept hearing snickers as she was trying to work, yet she kept ignoring it. Amelia put down the hammer sending a glare over to the boys. "If you have something to say, say it to my face." She said. She was angry.
The boy stood, dropping his hammer. "I don't think a girl should be able to work with the builders." He said with so much venom. "If you are chosen by Gally to be a builder, I think it would be time for a new keeper of the builders." He said loud enough so Gally could hear him.
"Shut up, Henry. You're just mad that she's off-limits. Shank." The boy met the eyes of the angry Glader. This caused him to talk even more. "Who would even be in charge? You?" He chuckled.
Henry was just getting angrier and angrier by the minute. "Shut up, Hank!" He stepped forward, but Hank didn't care. He just kept talking.
"I wouldn't vote for you. The only person that would vote for you is Carl. That would be five to two." He paused for a second. "Stop being a shank to the new greenie." That was the end of the conversation between the pain. Hank picked his hammer back up and got back to work.
"You'll regret that, Hank. You both will." Henry pointed to both Amelia and Hank.
Gally cut the boy off before he could say anything else, "Get back to work! Or I will throw you in the pit." This shut the boy up. He was still angry but got back to work none the less.
Amelia looked over at Hank as she held a board up for him, "Thank you. My name is Amelia, by the way."
The boy nodded and pounded the nails into the board, finishing the roof. He put his tools away. As he did this, Amelia took in his appearance. He looked like her.
The boy had dirty blonde hair, green eyes, and full lips. He was a foot taller than the girl. It was weird to notice, but she did.
"Alright, pack it up, guys and Amelia. Todays' work is done." Gally said, picking up all of his stuff. She took this opportunity to help him pick up his stuff. Their hands briefly touched, which caused butterflies to fly around in her stomach.
Amelia knew what job she wanted. She wanted to either be a builder, med-jack, or track-hoe. Maybe just maybe Alby and Newt would let her be all three.
