Equipment was cluttered around Avery's body. More so attached to her new left arm, as well as the left side of her face. It was all machinery now. Once in a while, data would show a spike in brain activity and physical movement.
This got everyone's hopes up. Not just to do something revolutionary, but to save this poor girl as well. This was something entirely new and had lots of work poured into it. One of the scientists was looking over her right now, checking her vitals and wiring.
He checked everything as functional and looked at the mechanized plate on her face. It looked a little strange, but it still blended with the shape of her head... the coloring was a very noticeable grey. The scientist sighed. How would she even fit back into society? Some people might recognize her from the news, or perhaps her school. The scientist starting thinking to himself.
'Maybe we can let you stay here. We don't have to let you go and suffer, do we? You can do rehab and stay. It'll be better'
He ran his hand over the plating of Avery's face. Checking every minor detail... that's strange. There's a thin wire that's slightly out of place on the side. Was it not connected properly?
He took a closer look. He expertly removed the plating, and under was tons of circuitry connected to nerves and connecting with other important pieces. He located the wire once more and carefully placed it back to where it originally was using tweezers.
With a minuscule amount of adhesive, it wouldn't move out of place again. Especially with the protection of the outer plating. He placed the plating back on.
His checking was done.
He looked at the monitors showing Avery's life signals. Nothing had changed. He smiled sadly at her lifeless body and stood up. He turned to the door and was going to go back to the lab for further research. He barely got past the door before he heard a beep. He froze.
Two beeps.
So many thoughts ran through his mind. Another beep was heard, it was more rapid. He turned around quickly, almost stumbling on his own legs before he caught himself.
The monitors were showing more life. Brainwave activity was increasing substantially. Her heart was pumping faster.
He rushed over to her side and pressed a button near the head of the operation bed. It alerted the whole lab. Scientists of all kinds were rushing to see the results. The main scientists who worked on her came in. The others who were curious stood outside, knowing their limitations. Not too many people should be in the room anyway.
"Dr. Jodey!"
The scientist who was originally in the room turned around.
"Y-yes Dr. Hilda?"
"Is she wakening?"
"I'm not sure, but look at her life signals, they're increasing!"
"She might wake up soon. You! Over there by the switch, dim the lights!" Hilda pointed to the scientist who was standing near the light switch. The lights were dimmed down. She didn't want the lights to blind the girl.
The group was starting to get closer to Avery's body. Jodey was getting a little pressed.
"Back up would you! Give her some space, she might freak out! Grab some water just in case, don't just sit and watch, follow the protocol!"
One of the scientists in the room rushed out to grab water, one was double-checking over her signals, and another was documenting the processes.
More machinery started to beep, indicating movement. Avery's right arm twitched. Her eyes... well mostly her real one opened slightly but shut once more.
Jodey was at her side, talking in a low voice.
"It's time to wake back up. You have so much to do, young scientist."
A short and quiet mumble was heard from Avery's throat. Her face started to scrunch up. A good sign. She was gaining more consciousness.
The whole room was wordless.
Avery's face relaxed and the beeping from the machinery slowed down.
The scientist who had brought the water entered and saw everyone's disappointment in their body language. They were all looking down.
Did it not... happen?
He scanned over everyone and looked at Jodey. He looked a little down. He kept looking and saw someone staring right back.
"Uhm. Guys? Can you look up for a second?"
All of them did so. They had shock plastered onto her face.
Water boy walked closer to Avery, whose face lacked emotion. He gave the water to her, face tilting in confusion for a second, but something told her that she needed the water. Perhaps it was the dryness in her throat, or how delicious the water looked in the tall paper cup.
Water boy helped her out with drinking the water. All of it disappeared in a matter of seconds. Everyone looked at her with pure amazement.
The cup was placed away and she stared at everyone else before muttering out an extremely hoarse voice.
"Wah?"
