Run!

Run!

Feb 08, 2021

As she ran she noticed that she wasn't being followed, so she looked back and saw that the man in the uniform hadn't even moved. He only looked at the huge insect and just stood there. She instinctively wanted to run further away, but she didn't. Instead, she turned and sprinted back to him.

She usually didn't like other people and didn't care much for them, they got in the way and he just reaffirmed that for her. Everything went wrong because of him, yet she grabbed his wrist and pulled him along. She generally never touched people, not even a handshake to seal a deal. This was a very rare exception.

Her quick pull on his wrist seemed to startle him back to reality. His eyes moved erratically towards her and he almost fell forward from the jerk. The young woman started pulling harder on his arm so he would start moving. She had his wrist clasped tightly in her one hand, the other still carried the device. Only when he finally ran fast enough to keep up with her, she let go of his wrist. She had to, it was too hard to keep holding it while running past trees, ducking under branches and jumping over roots sticking out of the ground like they were in some kind of wild action movie.

She was very fast with her long, slender legs and did her best to just keep them going. She had gotten used to running, especially running away, and was surprised that the young man kept up with her so easily and kept running alongside her. He didn't look back even once, while she did a few times.

Shane was too terrified and just looked straight ahead while she looked around, scanning their surroundings. They couldn't just keep running straight ahead, the wasp was faster then they were and they were literally running out of time.

The blonde woman had never been to this dimension before, partly because people probably didn't even live there and because it was very dangerous. As soon as she saw the giant insect she knew in which dimension they had ended up. It wasn't just any jungle, but a very specific one. This is where the huge animals lived, she had only heard stories about brave but stupid people who had ventured here in the name of science and described them. Hardly anyone took a trip to this tropical paradise besides field scientists and they had experienced why first hand today. Everything she heard seemed to be true and no one seemed to have exaggerated their stories.

When she saw a chance to make an escape, she grabbed it right away and reached for Shane’s wrist. She tugged hard on his arm, almost pulling him out of balance and out of his urge to keep running straight ahead. The duo passed behind a giant tree to the left while he stumbled after her because she was still holding his wrist tightly.

“This way! Hurry,” she hissed quietly.

It wasn't like he had any choice in the matter, she was still holding his wrist. Good thing too, because she seemed to be thinking a lot more clearly than he did. She managed to pull him between a few trees, they were grouped closely together and she could easily get through, even with her backpack still on her back, but Shane had to squeeze his broader body through. It wasn't the most easy thing, but it worked. It seemed to be a tangle of trees, or maybe it was just one tree. The young woman didn't know much about trees and honestly didn't really care that much.

The gigantic wasp was already darting towards them, angrily trying to poke the huge stinger attached to its rear through the openings between the trees. She pulled the young man down with her into one of the nooks, knowing that the stinger wouldn't get there that easily. They were trying to catch their breath while being as quiet as possible.
