We greeted funeral guests and showed them to their seats. The monk rhythmically chanted from a sutra (読経) while laying beats on a percussive instrument (the yellow object to the right on Panel 2). I then gave a eulogy written by my aunt. There was hardly a dry eye in the room.
Not pictured here was the monk inviting guests to burn incense (焼香) in front of the altar and to place my grandmother's beloved choral sheet music in her casket.
The funeral ended with a generous meal for the family and the monk.
